Wiki Club Minalabac

Wiki Club Minalabac (official name: Alliance for Open Education Collaboration Inc.) is professional club of educators and individuals supporting the promotion of open educational resources in the academe and beyond. It was founded on February 9, 2024 at Minalabac, Camarines Sur after an outreach activity of PhilWiki Community during the 5-day In-service Training of Teachers in DepEd Minalabac District and as a result of past activities involving faculty members.

PhilWiki Community's first activities in its initial period of recognition included an Offline Wikipedia DVD Distribution at Minalabac Central School in DepEd Minalabac District on 4 December 2015. A total of twenty-five (25) DVD copies were distributed to 25 public elementary schools in Minalabac, Camarines Sur during a district conference attended by school principals. The public schools district office also received a copy of the DVD.

During the pandemic, the User Group distributed copies of Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Teacher's Guide to Allan B. Fabay, Elementary School Principal I of Manapao Elementary School. In partnership with Kintab Artists Group, the Community also conducted Wiki Loves Art mural painting in the said school as part of the #Wikipedia20 global celebration in 2021.

Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom was presented by Irvin Sto. Tomas during the school-based In-service Training held on 2 February 2022 at DepEd Minalabac District. It was attended by more the 30 primary school teachers. In the past, the Education Team of Wikimedia Foundation conducted the pilot project Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom with the help of PhilWiki Community and two other affiliates in Morocco, and Bolivia. Different indicators of the education system have been studied for these countries, information on the country’s school system, teacher qualifications, curriculum, and media and information literacy.

Teachers from Minalabac participated at the Bikol WikiConference 2023 organized by Bikol Wikipedia Community held from 4-6 August 2023 at Raul S. Roco Library and New Crown Hotel in Naga City. From 18-20 December, representatives from Minalabac District attended the 3-day WikiCommons PH Conference 2023, a national conference of contributors on Wikimedia Commons, held at Avenue Plaza Hotel, Magsaysay Avenue in Naga City.

  • January 26 - Teachers attended the presentation on the utilization of Wikimedia in class during the 5-day In-service Training of Teachers in Minalabac District. Over 50 teachers and their school heads learned about the vast Wikimedia resources, proper citation and relicensing through the Wiki Quiz and other activities. At the end of the session, outputs were presented and at least 20 teachers signified to participate in the upcoming Wiki-related activities. The upcoming activities of the group include the formation of a Wiki Club for teachers in Minalabac and organizing a teacher's training on Wikimedia next school year 2024-2025.
  • February 9 - Primary school teachers attended their first Wiki meet up at Cocoland Farm and Resort in Minalabac with PhilWiki Community President Maffeth O. Sto. Tomas for the formation of a Wiki Club. Nora Rejalde of Antipolo Elementary School (AES) was elected president of the organization. MaryGrace Valencia of Malitbog Elementary School was chosen as the vice president. Rose Ann Navales and Janice Penetrante from AES, and Shyrel Jacobe from Magadap Elementary School were appointed secretary, treasurer and auditor, respectively. Nora, MaryGrace and Rose Ann have previously attended the Bikol WikiConference and WikiCommon PH Conference held last year.
  • February 12 - The organization submitted an application for the Securities and Exchange Commission registration as a non-stock non-profit corporation with purpose: to promote awareness and engage in the development, utilization and dissemination of Open Educational Resources in the academe and beyond. The members chose the name Alliance for Open Education Collaboration among the suggestions and decided to have fifteen (15) board of directors.
