Background

edit

WikiTutur was originally funded by Wikimedia Foundation Rapid Grant under the name "WikiTutur:Kolaborasi Wiktionary dan Lingua Libre untuk Pelestarian Bahasa di Indonesia". The project was initiated by volunteers from the Wikimedia Jakarta Community, who worked together with other local Wikimedia communities in Indonesia to set up series of online and offline events.

Throughout the first phase of the project, workshops on language documentation using Wiktionary and Lingua Libre were conducted in several cities across Indonesia. These workshops trained a broad cohort of participants from diverse age ranges and language communities, targeting not only active Wikimedians but also the general public. This broad approach was able to introduce the language documentation initiative to a wide audience, though it was not without limitations. The second phase of the project is currently experimenting with a more narrow approach, focusing on select languages and working together with non-Wikimedia agencies, organizations, and communities, in hope of bringing more depth.

Localisations for the project are under exploration; see also WikiKata, the sister project of WikiTutur in Malaysia.
