WikiKata is a language community outreach program focusing on preserving indigenous language and any community language in Malaysia and Malaysian-related language through the use of Wiktionary. This project was run in Malaysia by the Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia and in collaboration with other local organization in Malaysia and other related country.

Background

WikiKata was originally organized as a competition to increase the number of indigenous and local lemmas in Malay Wiktionary in 2020. It was continued to the 2021 edition, and discontinued for 2 years until the community user group revived it to a series of projects to outreach local community to preserve their respective language in 2023.

Online Competition

WikiKata Competition is an online competition for indigenous language speaker to enter their respective language to Malay Wiktionary. The competition run for a month and the winner for these competiion will get a present from either community user group or other organizations which sponsored it.

Community Outreach

In the community outreach project, workshops and tutorials are conducted boldly and attractively in several locality spread across Malaysia and other country which related to Malay and Malaysia community such as Singapore and Brunei. This workshop trains participants to use Malay Wiktionary to preserve the languages.
