With more and more languages facing a dwindling number of users/speakers, there is a viable possibility that a wealth of knowledge and culture could be lost forever. In order to combat this danger, this proposal would strive to provide a detailed database of threatened and nearly extinct languages. As opposed to typical Wikipedia and Wiktionary articles, which are fantastic but single-faceted resources, the Wiki LanguageSaver project would attempt to expand on these resources, by including information on such topics as vocabulary, pronunciation, and if available, written works. In addition to working under the auspices of the Wikimedia Foundation, this project also has the potential to attract a large amount of outside support through various organizations.

- Backstory
- Recently, I've been reading stories in the news regarding languages that are quickly becoming extinct. Once I took the time to research this subject, I discovered that a number of languages that are endangered or nearly extinct is far greater than most people, including myself, could have imagined; however, the number of at-risk languages does not have a corresponding number of organizations dedicated to the preservation of these languages, much less the cultures that these languages represent. I strongly feel that, if we were to combine the resources of the Wikimedia Foundation and its members along with other organizations and resources, we could make a difference in saving these languages and educating interested parties, so that these languages, and the cultures behind them, are not lost forever.
