Abstract:

At its most basic, a Wikimedian-in-Residence "....is a paid position to individuals from across the continent who become responsible for encouraging, assisting, training and supporting Africa’s cultural and academic institutions as they share their institutional knowledge with Wikipedia and its projects". The Wikimedia Community in Africa has seen an exponential increase in the number of Wikimedians in Residence prompted by the various needs of the organisations that host them .While this is a positive testimony to partnerships and furthers the reach of both communities represented, some questions still need to be asked for example :

  • Are they relevant to the African conversation?
  • Are they bringing in the change we need to see?
Level of advancement: All levels
Special requirements: Microphones, projector
Extra information: This will bring together at least 3 WiRs and 1 host organisation to discuss their views and experiences as WiRs and hosts respectively
How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region?

Bringing together at least 3 Wikimedians in Residence and one host organisation, this session hopefully will :

  • Bring together organisations that may need a Wikimedian in Residence, individuals that may be able to fill that role and the Wikimedia Foundation
  • Help participants understand who a Wikimedian-in-Residence is, why they are needed, what they do and what it takes to be one
  • Help participants weigh the needs and understand the benefits/relevance of having a Wikimedian in Residence
  • Share and learn from the unique experiences of the participants including but not limited to achievements, challenges and learning points
