The associated page is used by the TitleBlacklist MediaWiki extension, and lists strings of regular expressions that may not be used as page titles or usernames on any Wikimedia projects. Any Meta-Wiki administrator or steward can edit this blacklist.

Proposed additions

This section is for proposing that a page title be blacklisted; add new entries at the bottom of the section. Provide links demonstrating widespread creation by multiple users or IP's. Completed requests will be marked as done or denied and archived.

Prevent administrator and steward impersonation (new patterns)

This should prevent new accounts from having a username resembling that of an administrator or steward on any Wikimedia wiki. This prevents impersonation of highly privileged users and attacks on them via username, such as implying that a certain steward abuses the user. I've seen impersonations of en:User:Ad Orientem (English Wikipedia) locked recently. For example, in the case of User:Ad Orientem:

User:Tegel (steward): T[ae]g[ae]l <newaccountonly>

Me (no special roles, example): F[ae]s?t+e?r+ th?[ae]n Th?[au]n?de?r+ <newaccountonly>

علاء (Alá') (steward): [عغء][لا]+[عغء] <newaccountonly> A+la+ <newaccountonly>

I would not fit to be in the list of patterns that prevent administrator or steward impersonation, but these are just examples and a lot more administrators and stewards need to be included as their own regex patterns. Faster than Thunder (talk) 19:52, 14 March 2025 (UTC)

I've explicitly mentioned that some impersonations of an English Wikipedia administrator have been locked recently, and I have seen impersonations of another Wikipedia administrator locked as well, but a long time ago. Faster than Thunder (talk) 04:45, 16 March 2025 (UTC)

I don't need to be on the list because I am not an administrator anywhere. Of course, people with elevated roles like administrators tend to be targets for bad usernames. Faster than Thunder (talk) 15:05, 19 March 2025 (UTC)

Is one solution to only focus on the English Wikipedia, since as the most edited Wikimedia wiki, these users are more vulnerable to impersonation or username attacks? Faster than Thunder (talk) 15:06, 19 March 2025 (UTC)

That project has over 800 admins, so no - we are not going to add 800+ lines here. Note, there is already a similar-username checker in place globally. If you have ideas to improve that, feel free to open a phab ticket and/or contribute a patch. — xaosflux ^Talk 19:32, 19 March 2025 (UTC)

This section is for proposing that a title be unlisted; please add new entries at the bottom of the section. Remember to provide the specific title or regex blacklisted, links to the articles they are used in or useful to, and arguments in favour of unlisting. Completed requests will be marked as done or denied and archived. The addition or removal of a title is not a vote, please do not bold the first words in statements.

Troubleshooting and problems

This section is for comments related to problems with the blacklist (such as incorrect syntax or entries not being blocked), or problems saving a page because of a blacklisted title. This is not the section to request that an entry be unlisted (see Proposed removals above).
