Geburtstage edit

--Nicola (talk) 06:22, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

EN @Nicola:Thanks for your feedback, could you provide links so I can investigate? Xinbenlv (talk) 06:33, 26 February 2019 (UTC) Reply
The data base links are on the pages - it might be more useful to check them then to compare with another language version. And what about the "inconsistency" in the English version? There should be notices aswell - or do you think the birth dates in the English are automatically the right ones? --Nicola (talk) 08:24, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
No language is better than any other language. English (and others) will also received notifications about inconsistency. You are not the only one who raise this question, so I put it on m::User:Xinbenlv_bot#Q._Is_XXX_language_Wikipedia_always_correct,_when_contradicting_another_YYY_language_Wikipedia?. Article is inconsistent with itself? edit

The birthday bot reported an error at en:Dean (South Korean singer). However, the only place where a birthday is listed is the English Wikipedia article; the second line of the bot table shows empty parameters 4, 5, and 6. C.Fred (talk) 16:43, 1 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for letting me know. I will check it up, probably it's caused by my "early termination" command in this code line. This shall happen only once in entire run at most, if you found another instance, please let me know . Xinbenlv (talk) 18:04, 1 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
I take that back, this is caused by a bad data case caused by line_73 and line_74.

Anniversaires incohérents on wp-FR edit

See: fr:Special:Contributions/Xinbenlv_bot

« Anniversaires » = « birthdays » But here, you have to replace:

  • (section title) « Anniversaires incohérents  » by « Dates de naissance incohérentes ».

Daodejing edit

Hello Xinbenlv,

I've been a computer programmer in part of my professional life but I'm writing to you today because you say you have a professional knowledge of both Classical Chinese and English, with a Chinese mother language; and I need advice from someone like that. Please don't be offended if I use pinyin romanization throughout, as a "modern consensus" romanization of Chinese: of course I know that it is inadequate for how Classical Chinese was pronounced in remote times, but I feel comforted with a parallel with how Western classical languages are pronounced in continental Europe nowadays: Latin sometimes with a pronounciation trying to approximate that of Cicero and sometimes (especially by Catholic priests and those taught by them) with one similar to that of modern Italian, Classical Greek sometimes with Erasmus's pronunciation and sometimes (especially in Greece) with the pronunciation of modern demotic Greek.

Some time ago I wanted to try to understand Taoism, but I soon found out that all translations available to me of its fundamental texts (Daodejing, Zhuangzi, etc.; especially the former) failed miserably at rendering the poetic rhythm of the original. Indeed, simply looking at the Daodejing's Chinese text without understanding any of it made me feel that it must be strong poetry.

So I tried the hard way, armed myself with several dictionaries, including among others the Chinese-French dictionary of the EFEO (where I found many quotes from Laozi) and Nelson's Japanese-English Character dictionary (which includes "an easy way" to find the traditional Kangxi classification of any Chinese character known only by shape) plus whatever I could find as Chinese-French dictionaries published in the PRC (often, but not always, with translations "simplified" to the point of unusability), and I tried to translate the text into English, Esperanto and French "poetic language", trying to make it talk to imagination rather than to reason by staying as close as was grammatically possible to the original. The result is not always immediately understandable, but I view that as a quality rather than as a blemish, since OT1H poetry is rarely immediately understandable, and OTOH I suspect that the original text always required some effort, maybe even a great deal of effort, on the part of the reader, before said reader could "feel" it.

But since I don't know Chinese, I had to look up practically every character, and it was a hard job (made slightly easier by the repetitious nature of poetry and by the "character clusters" listed in some dictonaries), and at the fifth chapter (or "song" as I called them in Esperanto and French) I "temporarily" left the job for something else and never took it back. A few minutes ago I had a look at the third song and tried to sing the last verse 爲無爲、則無不治。 as something both musical and respectful of Chinese tonalities, and indeed, singing aloud "Wéi wú wéi, zé wú bù zhì." on a melody rising on the first five syllables then falling to conclusion on the tonic on the last two — maybe something like mi - fa - sol - la - do↑ - si - do↓ — while trying to think "Enact inaction, a rule without exceptions." struck me as an unexpectedly beautiful peroration (as that word isused in both rhetoric and music) to that piece about 無爲.

What do you think? Should I metaphorically kick myself in the butt and try to continue, or is my output-so-far so hopelessly sophomoric that I would do the world and myself a favour by destroying it all?

P.S. Just for fun, I Google-translated the lzh-5 label in your Babel box, and it seemed that for once GT didn't miss its target: "This prince's pen is like a god, the way of classical Chinese is clear to the heart." Wow, how prettily said! (The zh-N label is much more prosaic.) :-) — Tonymec (talk) 23:54, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Tonymec: thank you for visiting my talk page and I am glad that you study classic Chinese, which even for many people in China is super difficult. As it said 有朋自远方来,不亦乐乎, when a friend comes from far away, wouldn't it be of great delight? I think you have claim to a very high level for reading Zhuangzi and Daodejing. Very happy for you. When you have any question, just let me know. And feel free to write me an 3mei1: which is ZZN at ZZN dot im. Xinbenlv (talk) 05:58, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Xinbenlv: When a friend comes from far away, wouldn't it be of great delight? Of course it would, and I return you the compliment. Thank you for your kind words. — Tonymec (talk) 09:28, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Good day to you. I saw that you've concluded the initial request for feedback and had initiated a second round. Since the July announcement on Template:Main Page/WM News has now been superseded I'm inclined to archive it, however I'm a bit reluctant to do so until you've crafted a new announcement to place there to draw the attention of other contributors. In any event I'll be around once or twice more this week if you need help adding a new announcement, but if your comfortable doing so yourself please feel free to do so, thanks.

@Quantocius Quantotius: Thank you I will take a look. Xinbenlv (talk) 18:49, 18 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Since discussion has already started I went ahead, archived the old announcement, and added a new one worded more or less identically to the old since I wasn't sure how you wanted to phrase it and that seemed to be the best option without knowing your preference, let me know if you have any concerns.
