Regarding "Yoshiharu Habu and Modern Shogi"

Dear Mike.lifeguard.

Nice to meet you, I am Yoshihisa Yamada, voluntary worker for the diffusion of Shogi at the international level. Sorry to write it, but there is no choise because I could not understand how to declare my opinion on the Talk:Spam blacklist. The ebook "Yoshiharu Habu and Modern Shogi" is absolutely not a spam. It is a free book about Shogi for the begineer opened on the web due to the good will of the author. Then this book is a kind of public good in our society. Then, if possible, I would like to let this external link on Wikipedia. Is it possible? If there is any problem, please advise me.

Best regards.

Yoshihisa Yamada

Sorry, Wikipedia and our other wikis are not an appropriate venue for you to promote this book. You may be interested in using dmoz for this purpose.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 16:25, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

I goofed. Bug 18994 should be major, not enhancement.

I realize this is probably not the right place to bring this up, but I don't know the right way. When I submitted bug 18994, I left the severity at enhancement. This is incorrect. It should be major. However, I don't know how to change it (perhaps I am not allowed. I don't think submitting a new duplicate bug is the correct way to handle this, so I wonder if you could advise me what to do). Thanks. Dnessett 00:11, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

Fixed & added a comment.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 00:50, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry

I'm sorry to disturb you but, is it possible to restart BiblioBot? Since the toolserver restarted yesterday the bot is absent. Thank you sir, —Dferg (talk) 20:45, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

The toolserver was down for some time, and the processes hung. I've restarted all my bots now. If you email me, I get those even when on the road (though of course I need to get to a computer before I can do anything). But at least I can make an effort to do that faster when I know something is wrong.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 00:26, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Is there a "tar" like tool for mediawiki?

Sorry to keep bothering you, but I have googled for about an hour without finding somewhere to ask this question. Is there a tool that allows you to upload and download namespace subtrees stored on mediawiki installations? I am thinking of something like a wiki-tar tool. I have read about bots, but I don't know exactly if that is what is required. Such a tool would not generally run automatically, but only when a user wants to update or archive a namespace subtree. Dnessett 22:31, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm not really sure what you mean by "namespace subtrees"... however there is xml export/import which might do what you want.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 00:28, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

I think the Special:Export and Special:Import pages do what I want, but Special:Import requires import permission. Here is my problem. I have developed a template for creating citations and rendering them in a manner suitable for books. The basis of the template is the cite extension, but I had to overcome some problems, since it was designed under the assumption that citation data and its rendering occurs on the same wiki page (conditions suitable for wikipedia, but not generally prevalent for books). I have done the development of the template on my own personal mediawiki installation to: 1) save cycles on the Wikibooks servers, 2) learn how the mediawiki software works, and 3) to keep early clumsy implementations to myself (since I am also learning about mediawiki markup and javascript). The template is located in a page tree rooted at User:Dnessett/Template/Bref (the last name being that of the template) on my personal wiki. It comprises 37 pages, of which 32 are example pages (there are 4 examples and since this template is for books, there are many pages per book). The other pages are a doc page, a page on a helper script, a page of installation notes, and a page summarizing some thoughts about how a new book citation extension might work. In order to get this tree over to Wikibooks manually, I have to create 37 pages and upload the appropriate text to them by hand. What I would rather do is export this sub tree from my local mediawiki installation and then import it into Wikibooks at the appropriate grafting point. As I said, I think Special:Export and Special:Import would work, but I don't have import permission on Wikibooks. Dnessett 00:55, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

If your server is publicly accessible, I can use Special:Export on your wiki, then use Special:Import on Wikibooks. Otherwise, feel free to email me the xml file.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 00:57, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

I'll have to do the latter, since my personal wiki is on a Mac and uses MAMP and is not really set up as a multi-user server. Also, I am behind my home firewall. I will start playing around with Special:Export and attempt to email you something this weekend. By the way, is there something wrong with your talk page? When I tried to edit just this section by selecting the edit button associated with it, I got an error saying the section didn't exist. Where can I find your email address? Dnessett 01:05, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Question: Is there a way to export a page tree using Special:Export other than to type the name of each and every leaf in the tree into the text box?Dnessett 01:23, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Never mind. I read a Help page that explained how to get the names of the pages without typing them all in. Got the XML file. Also, the edit section buttons now seem to work. I still need an email address, however. Dnessett 01:48, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Hello?

I was wondering if you still are willing to upload a subtree expressed in Special:Export format to my user space on Wikibooks (per the last entry above)? You haven't responded to my last query, which I left on Saturday. If so, there is no need to send me an email address, I have uploaded the XML file to a temporary page. I have put <span style="display:none"><nowiki> at the beginning and </span></nowiki> at the end so the text doesn't display. If you strip these, the remaining text is the XML file. Once you have the XML file, you can delete the temporary page Dnessett 15:10, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, I've been away for the past little while. I've imported from the xml & deleted the page as well.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 19:46, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. Dnessett 21:41, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Your response on Drini's talk page about Privacy Policy

I asked Drini:

Quite a time ago you've reverted[1] a G.A. script with the comment "google analytics is not allowed in global scripts". Could you please kindly point me to the policy your revert was based on? Thank you very much! --grin ✎ 13:13, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

And you replied:

wmf:Privacy policy. It's been removed it again, do not revert the edit. — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 13:59, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

I don't mind answering you even it wasn't you who made the action.

First, please read the Privacy Policy, then be so kind as to precisely quote the part you believe justifies the action. You must be aware that this action was questioned in a few places, and I asked my question after re-reading the policy.

Then, it wasn't quite polite to warn me about something I didn't even hint to intend. If I want to interfere with a foreign project I need a very good reason to do so. It is quite unfortunate that some people with strong flags do not follow these guidelines, and they chose not to discuss first and make (questionnable) actions later.

Third, you're welcome to suggest the solution to the problem as in how to get reliable statistics about a project. Since I am pretty sure you have no solutions, it would be prudent to first examine the reasons behind the problem, try to come up with solutions, correlate your opinion with the Privacy Policy as well as the opinion of the Foundation and then try to make major changes to foreign projects you're not involved in.

Fourth, let me quote the tasks (and thus possible ways of actions) of a steward: "They are tasked with technical implementation of community consensus, dealing with emergencies, and intervening against crosswiki vandalism." As far as I see neither of these were present.

But you are most welcome to point me to the discussion which preceded the reverts, and I hope you can simply prove me wrong, showing that there was a real discussion about it, and some community consensus, hopefully including the project in question which suffered the interference from outside.

I do not want to blame any stewards, because they are probably requested to do the reverts, but I strongly believe it was not justified and should not be repeated. Thank you. --grin 08:30, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

The privacy policy does not allow you to send private data to third parties. In fact, you are not allowed to access it either. This should be abundantly clear to anyone who has read the privacy policy. Please refer to discussions both past and current on foundation-l.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 13:05, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Could you give me an advice? Yoshihisa Yamada

Dear Mike.lifeguard I am Yoshihisa Yamada who asked the question above. Now, I have another question about the site you deleted "Habu Yoshiharu and modern shogi". Actually, our site is classified as "blacklist", but I can guarantee that it is not. I will not do the same action to add this link to wikipedia, but I want this link to be declassified for our honor. What kind of action do I have to take to solve this problem?

Regards.

Yoshihisa Yamada

As detailed in this report, you have been using Wikimedia projects as a vector for promoting your site. The purpose of the Wikimedia projects is not to promote you or your site, and the links you added are unlikely to be acceptable within our content guidelines. I'm afraid you won't be allowed to add any more links to this site. While you can make an appeal on WM:SPAM, I think it'd be unlikely to be fruitful.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 04:26, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. I completely understand that it is not approprite to promote our site on Wikipedia and that I will never repeat it. But, I simply want our site to be declassified from blacklist. It is the question of honor. Please advise us if there is any usuful measure for it.--Yoshihisa Yamada 08:20, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

You can make a request on WM:SPAM, however due to past abuse and a lack of usefulness to our projects, I doubt the domain would be removed.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 13:30, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

hi

I see that you removed this from the notice board; Thought this might interest you, before this aticle was neutral and list all point of views, someone removed all the sources of the article including large amounts of information and references, and turned it into this essay format of their personal beliefs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Egyptian_race_controversy I don't know what to call this other than racism and a certain group of admins (who always end up on race topics or bring up races) banding together to abuse their power (manly user Paul Barlow, and Dbachmann) there is so much administrator abuse going on wiki. There need to be some kind of noticeboard to report it76.118.238.21 15:52, 18 June 2009 (UTC) This is not even the half of what they have done. They randomly remove sourced information and references on articles about african and middle eastern people and history. I was looking for a place to report it, I can not put it on the wiki admin notice board because. It is the same group of editors on the Admin notice boards when they see a complaint about themselves or a friend they remove it76.118.238.21 17:08, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Hello!

Hello Mike. Apologies for the stupidity of some people in 82.42.232.0/21 and 82.42.144.0/20 (I should know, I blocked someone for spamming who was using one of those ranges on my now-closed wiki, which was a spam haven, despite being about computer security!). The stupidity of some causes good people to be blocked (as I had to do). Anyway, I'm just an occasional contributor to Wikimedia (well, to be honest, someone who did edit Wikipedia between 2004 and 2006 as an anon), editing now and then from different PCs being on the move and such. (Note: This current IP address will not do anything wrong, since I want to be helpful!). --82.42.145.228 20:39, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
