Hallo edit

Ein herzliches Willkommen auch von mir. Darf ich deine Aufmerksamkeit auf SWMT lenken? Vielleicht magst du unserem bescheidenen Club beitreten. :o) --Thogo (talk) 22:00, 19 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

--Johannes Rohr 22:43, 19 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

My newest user name Wikinerd2000 was infact created on 2-2-07, but before that i was known as Wesleywillis on Wikipedia. As you can see in this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Wesleywillis . I was a registered user of Wikipedia since atleast 11-29-06.

Zero-content Wiktionary edit

Good night. I am bringing to your attention this Wiktionary edition that, as of recent, has not received a single ounce of real activity. There are at least two "entries" on this version that have been actually used for interwiki spamming purposes. Can you please go over here and clean them up, and deal with those troublesome spammers? --Slgrandson 04:10, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Move-protected your userpages edit

Hello Johannes Rohr. I've protected your user pages from moves following vandalism. Most user pages are never moved, so this probably isn't problem. If you would prefer that they not be protected from page moves—for example, if you prefer moving discussion edit history when archiving—please leave a comment on my talk page and I will lift the protection. —{admin} Pathoschild 22:02:30, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Re: ie:Wikipedia:Protected titles edit

Hi there. I understand your question as to whether a bot that keeps the list "coordinated" in all wikis exists, as in, "If I add Test/index.php at ie:, will it be added to de: and all other interwikis" then no, because a bot of that kind would need sysop access in different wikis. If you were referring to "having that page created for all wikis that do not have it yet", then the same rationale applies: the page is only useful if it can be fully protected by an admin, and in some communities some admin bots are not well regarded (in example, the English one). It would be nice, but pretty difficult. I would think it is a better solution to have a master database at Meta, keeping it synchronized with all the other wikipedias, adding them to Meta only if the page has been created in at least two different Wikipedias with similar content. -- ReyBrujo 20:19, 2 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: Abour Lord's prayer edit

Hello Johannes Rohr! About your comment, you r right in some points: the Lord's prayer should be a wikisource article, i know; but also i know that there is no wikisource of many of the small wikis. In the future the articles could be expand but right saying that at this moment no are enciclopedic article. As a solution, if you want u can move to categories: like no encyclopedic; but i consider that don't have to be delete any of them. Muchos Salu2! =)--Kanon6917 03:17, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

There is oldwikisource: which is exactly the place for texts in languages which do not have their own Wikisource edition. Please use it instead. And, yes, I still think the articles should be deleted. One reason is that this attracts copycats: As I wrote, someone else has recently started to upload the UN translations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to many small Wikipedias, which is both non-encyclopaedic (not an article) and copyvio (copyrighted translations). I have the impression, that some people think, that the small wikis must be stuffed with content at any cost and that any content is legit, as long as it is in the target language (or looks like..) --Johannes Rohr 07:20, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Inuktitut edit

Hi, I was reading Proposals_for_closing_projects/Closure_of_Inuktitut_Wikipedia and was thinking about what you said when you said "there is no one-to-one correspondence between both scripts, so automated conversion might proof difficult to achieve" (at 13:34, 22 February 2007 if you want to find where you said that :)) and decided to investigate. I looked for the largest article in both syllabics and roman (which appears to be iu:ᑲᓇᑕᒥ_ᐃᓄᐃᑦ_ᐅᖃᐅᓯᖏᑦ/Kanatami_Inuit_Uqausingit). I found that I could convert both roman to syllabics and syllabics to roman perfectly (although the parts which aren't to be converted would need to be tagged). I also downloaded the data for iu.wp.org and extracted all the words in syllabics and converted them to roman and back to syllabics. Just by reversing the order in which characters were substituted, I could convert most words to roman and back and get the same characters that I started with. The only problem was about 12 words which contained a consonant and a vowel separately, e.g. "ᐊᒻᐊᕈ" (a m a ru) was converted to "amaru" which was converted back to "ᐊᒪᕈ" (a ma ru), but when I inserted a zero-width non-joiner character before the vowel when converting, I could convert both ways for all of the words. I did come across two words which contain characters which don't appear to be in Inuktitut, although they both appear to be part of names ("ᐂᒌᒧᒦᓇ" and "ᐦᐋᓐᓱᓐ"). I realise that the iu wikipedia is still small and not a very good sample size, but from what I've seen, automatic conversion doesn't seem to be as difficult as it first seemed. What do you think? --Nikki 22:22, 3 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think I would be absolutely delighted, if you are willing to invest some time and effort into making this work. Have you read the discussion at iu:Talk:ᐊᒥᖅ/amiq#Dual language? I recall that iu:User:Qrc2006 gave some examples of ambiguous conversions. If you believe this could be easily overcome, you would make some people very happy. Would you also be able to do the programming work, required to implement a conversion scheme? --Johannes Rohr 07:28, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hi again, sorry for the slow reply, I've been away over the weekend. I would like to see it work, the current way seems rather messy and unscalable, Inuktitut surely deserves a more elegant interface! I currently have time, and hopefully effort, so I'll see what I can do. :)
I hadn't seen that page, but I've read it now. I do think that the ambiguities when converting to syllabics can be overcome, because all the examples I've seen are just cases where something is needed to force a break between syllables, a zero-width non-joiner character works, so does enclosing each syllable with HTML (e.g. span), and there are surely other alternatives. There's also the -{ ... }- syntax too, apparently.
I haven't touched the MediaWiki code before, and it's been a while since I've used PHP, but there's a first time for everything, I guess. ;) I've installed the MediaWiki and played about with it a bit and managed to get it to convert both ways.
There are a couple of things where I need a native speaker though, firstly, we really should translate the interface completely. I think it would be better to have two variants of the interface, one in syllabics, one in roman, which could be set to match the syllabics version and the roman version of the content. Secondly, there are some cases where the syllabics and roman versions in the wiki don't match, so I need someone to say which is right. Most are very small variations (long vowels, doubled consonants, etc.) but there are a couple where they don't match at all (e.g. iu:ᐃᒥᒐᖅ/imrujaq when "ᐃᒥᒐᖅ" is "imigaq"). If these really should be written like that and it's not a mistake, the -{ ... }- syntax should be able to handle it (but I personally couldn't get it to work). Is iu:User:Qrc2006 the person I should be asking? Are there any other speakers around? --Nikki 09:19, 10 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, you sound quite committed. That's encouraging. Yes, as far as I have followed the process, Qrc2006 is the only permanently active user. You should definitely contact him. I don't know if in the meantime other speakers have turned up. You would have to check the recentchanges to find out. --Johannes Rohr 09:33, 10 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
There are no other active users, unfortunately. I hope others will come, but it seems to need time. --Thogo (talk) 18:05, 10 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your change to the recent closure discussions edit

Hello. Unlike proposals for adding Wikis, closing requests are votes (although arguments can count in the case of a tie). And if you still want to change it, at least try to use terms which do not differ in British and American English. -- Prince Kassad 10:24, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

There is no comprehensive policy regarding project closures at the moment, there is only a draft. This draft suggests, that decisions should be taken on the grounds of arguments rather than vote count, to which I fully agree. The whole procedure is still largely undefined. Personally I cannot see any good reason to favour vote count over arguments. If you strongly believe, these discussions should be votes, I invite you to discuss this at a central location. I'd suggest that Talk:Closure of WMF projects is a good place, alternatively, Talk:Proposals for closing projects. --Johannes Rohr 10:39, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm not saying I want closing discussions to be votes, I'm just saying it's currently the de facto standard for them to be votes. If you want only arguments to count, go ahead and start a discussion. -- Prince Kassad 10:44, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Choctaw language edit

I objected and you still closed the project, I found a fluent Choctaw speaker who can translate pages easily and make dozens in a week. I can also be an admin since I know all the rules I can delete articles, etc and stop the vandalism that occurs. She also represents an organization that can help, but the project is now closed... --Yegoyan 09:57, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

In the discussion, you did not provide any specific arguments against closing the project, neither did you express your objection against the motion to end the discussion. And you did not mention that you had contacted potential contributors. Please ask your friends to file a proposal at Requests for new languages and start a test project in the incubator:.
Apart from that, it would certainly be useful, if your friend would register on meta, so that we can discuss the matter with the language subcommittee. If she and her organisation are seriously interested in building a viable Choctaw encyclopaedia, I believe no-one will want to stand in the way. --Johannes Rohr 12:37, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yeah I probably can, but I really have no idea what the whole incubator thing is, let me email the person back and ask her and them what she thinks about this too. It's too confusing for me to request all this so I was just going to drop it, I will wait for the results and answer you back soon. They are fluent Choctaw speakers they can translate anything, and again I can do admin duties to delete spam and anything else necessary. Thank you. --Yegoyan 11:19, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hallo. Jatrobat hat mich hier gebeten, to consider what is the best to do.

--Johannes Rohr 12:36, 9 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Can you stop the closure? I want to create articles, I speak Wolof. here. SF-Language 09:57, 20 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your user page says you are wo-1. Do you think your proficiency in Wolof is sufficient to sustain a wiki? I don't think a single user with basic skills would be deemed a viable editing community for new projects. --Johannes Rohr 13:09, 20 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think I speak enough Wolof, besides Fluence on the nah.wikipedia just speaks nah-1 and also contributes like he speaks at level 3. SF-Language 13:12, 20 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Is it possible to change the interface from English to Wolof? I have already selected wolof in my preferences, but the interface shows English, this isn't the case at the Wolof wikipedia. Should I ask temporary sysop acces to copy the interface from wikipedia to wikiquote? SF-Language 14:02, 20 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
It would be better to import the localisation into betawiki, so that it can be properly included into MediaWiki. --Johannes Rohr 17:17, 20 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
How does importing work? SF-Language 17:31, 20 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Please see http://nike.users.idler.fi/betawiki/Translating:Intro
I understand that the initial step is to register at betawiki and request translator privileges. You can find al the already translated messages at
http://wo.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Allmessages&ot=php&uselang=wo
http://nike.users.idler.fi/betawiki/Toiminnot:Translate?x=1&msgclass=core&sort=normal&uselang=wo
I cannot tell you what the exact steps are to have the messages imported, as I have not done this before. User:Niki should be able to help you.--Johannes Rohr 20:13, 20 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be no link from the main Proposals for closing projects page to Proposals for closing projects/Closure of Wolof Wikiquote. I would appreciate it if you would have a look at Proposals for closing projects/Closure of Simple English Wikiquote. Prince Kassad is attempting to close the discussion and also close the project and says the community has 2 days to answer (but doesn't say where the answers should go). I'm not familiar with how these discussions are usually closed and would like to save the project. --Coppertwig 23:07, 5 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Archival permission edit

Hello Johannes,

I am the archivist for the language subcommittee. You sent several messages to the language subcommittee in December 2007 about approval for the Low Saxon Wikisource request. Discussion with the subcommittee is regularly copied to a public archive for transparency. Since you have not agreed to archival, your messages are currently replaced with the message "<this user has not agreed to public archival>".

Do you agree to the public archival of all your emails? Even if you do agree, you can mark any email or comment as private and the message will be replaced by an appropriate note to that effect. The archives can be edited at any time to remove a message you forgot to mark as private.

Thanks. —{admin} Pathoschild 21:50:06, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

I agree. --Johannes Rohr 08:02, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Afar Wiktionary edit

I informed User:MaxSem (he closed the proposal) about this but he doesn't seem to be around since 17th August and the rest of admins who could do it seem not to have read it or just ignored it. You proposed the closure: do you have rights to do the transfer? If you do, it should not be much work, it's only three pages. One with valid content, the other are for the main page. The task has been neglected for months. I wonder why so much attention to close it but none to finish up the task properly. Maybe one valid page in Afar is not worth the trouble for admins in Meta? Thanks. Regards. --83.44.128.168 10:12, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ugh! I have just seen that you haven't been around since 1th July, 2008. Sorry. I will ask it again and if nobody responds, I will leave a message in the Metapub, tomorrow. Thanks. Regards. --83.44.128.168 10:16, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
