This project exists to organize collaboration with the open access and open science communities, paving the way for future Wiki-Academies, meet-ups and general cooperation between them and the Wikimedia community.
Scope
The project generally considers any article related to the Smithsonian Institution to be within its direct scope.
Our work covers:
Smithsonian Institution museums
Smithsonian Institution personnel, including both leaders, curators and other personnel on staff if they meet the appropriate criteria of notability
Smithsonian Institution affiliates, programs, events, functions and charities
Artifacts within the Smithsonian Institution collection, including aircraft, art, sculptures, named jewelry, etc. (we need to clarify this a bit)
Animals displayed (either alive or dead) within the Smithsonian Institution or its zoo if the animal is named (Such as the Gorillas at the Zoo or Cher Ami on display)
Once we begin major collaborations with the Smithsonian, any articles written explicitly as part of the collaboration will fall into the project's indirect scope.
At the meeting with the Smithsonian, Wikipedians proposed the following cooperative activities between the Smithsonian and the Community (See the proposal at Wikimedia Outreach):
Events
Meet-ups at the Smithsonian for in-person development of high-importance Smithsonian collection content
Wiki-Academies where Wikipedians teach SI staff how to interact with Wikipedia and the Wikipedia community
SI staff workshops with Wikipedians to increase their awareness and use of SI resources in article-writing
Connect Wikipedians with curators and other SI staff for collaborations
Analyze and manage content on Wikipedia to best benefit the missions of both the SI and the Wikipedia community
Coordinate competitions to improve SI-related text and media content on Wikipedia
Improved access to Smithsonian resources, such as libraries and archives, in turn allowing volunteers to improve research for Wikipedia content
Content Development
Wikipedian organization and development of Smithsonian-related content on Wikipedia
Clearer identification and attribution of media from, by the Smithsonian Institution on Wikimedia sites
Image restoration and development for Wikimedia and Smithsonian shared use
The sharing of Smithsonian media, such as images, animations and sounds, with Wikipedia to increase visibility of collections and use of materials
The list is only a proposed plan of action, and future events and activities will be planned with the cooperation of local members, project members, and various groups within the Smithsonian.
Kalulu was a DYK on August 1 and got about 10,000 views. (It was inspired by the picture that the SI released to Flickr. Victuallers (talk) 22:32, 8 August 2010 (UTC))
