@Zuz (WMF): Just to point out that with the gallery format, you're emphasizing the people with horizontal photos (I shouldn't complain - I'm one of them. ;-) ). I'm also not sure how much influence there will be from how attractive different people are? It might be better as a table with a row per candidate, and relevant info included (e.g., country). @Mike Peel:Thank you for your feedback. The original size of each candidate's picture varies. And for some reason defining a width for the images doesn't seem to effect any change. We intend to include this gallery in the main election page and It being in a table format will only make the main page very long. There is so much text on all the election pages, we thought adding pictures instead of more text helps to make the pages less boring. We are still figuring out how to make the pages more interactive and welcoming for all across our movement, so this is a work in progress.Zuz (WMF) (talk) 20:20, 1 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Use of images should be re-considered

edit

I'm reiterating the concerns that I raised in the Telegram group "WM Board selection" to JKoerner (WMF) - I would recommend considering a return to a text list (or text dominant list) to be the most neutral presentation of the candidates. The undue impact of images in elections is quite well studied (The Image and the Vote: The Effect of Candidate Presentation on Voter Preference, American Journal of Political Science, Vol. 30, No. 1, Feb., 1986). Therefore, unless the size, quality and use of images of candidates is controlled and normalized, it's best to go with existing Wikimedia board elections precedent or a text-dominant presentation. If the election committee is to make a significant shift to having a gallery-oriented entry point to the candidates, it should do so as an informed and well-documented act of commission, and not simply to make things "less boring." Adding pictures as a supplement to text content is one thing. Making the images the first and most prominent entry point for voters is very different and may have significant consequences, intentional or not.
