Wikimedia Nederland launches the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform. The platform aims to stimulate global re-use of Dutch collections on non-European cultural heritage. In particular, it aims to stimulate collections on countries with which the Netherlands have had historical ties. These countries include Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Ghana, Suriname, South Africa, and others.

The platform also aims to foster contacts between Dutch cultural heritage institutions and Wikimedia contributors across the globe. However, participation is not limited to Wikimedia contributors. Anyone can participate, making it relevant for education and research as well.

Re: Does your country have historic ties with the Netherlands?

To answer the question, the main recent tie is the mass emigration from Italy to the Benelux. Other than that, all the thinkers who had to flee to Antwerp and so on due to Roman church persecution. :) Nemo (overleg) 14 jun 2016 14:09 (CEST)

Brazil

Hi Rodrigo, thanks! No plans yet; if we notice there is interest in Brazil, we can approach our GLAM contacts with requests. For instance, our long-term partner, the National Museum of World Cultures, has quite a bit of Brazilian heritage in its collection and we can approach them with the question to donate some of this material if it might be useful. There are probably other GLAMs in the Netherlands as well with collections related to Brazil, we still need to investigate this. Likewise, Brazil may have interesting GLAM collections related to the Netherlands, but we don't have any contacts there yet. Are you interested in some specific topics? This donation would be interesting.

Some group here in Brazil are planning GLAM's projects, maybe I could talk to them to include GLAMs related to Dutch cultural heritage.

However, we need to check which museums are guarding such material.

Hi Rodrigo, The National Museum of World Cultures has made a selection of the Brazilian heritage in their collection. It will be available later in November and I will do my best to find someone to upload it before the end of the year. I will let you know as soon as it is available and will invite the Brazilian community to use these objects as they wish. Furthermore the archive of the Dutch province Noord-Holland, the Noord-Hollands Archief, have discovered 34 beautiful drawings by Frans Post made in the time that the Dutch ruled in Brazil. Dutch Bengal

Hi @Spinster:, I am interested in Dutch Bengal, specially Hugli-Chinsura, which is just 4-hours ride from my home. I can organize a photo-walk to capture the Dutch heritage there (though not much left), and increase the photo and article content of the area, if you want. We are going to take photographs and create articles in at least 2 languages about Dutch Cemetery in Chinsurah very soon. In the meanwhile, I found this small selection of old maps and drawings related to Hougly/Chinsura, which I believe are all public domain: http://www.atlasofmutualheritage.nl/en/Hougly.492p - they are part of the Atlas of Mutual Heritage project, where Dutch GLAMs make media available about 'shared heritage' regions. Portugal

Hello,

I would highly recommend including Portugal as a priority, mainly due to two factors:

• In the 15th/16th century we were one of the poles of execution and acquisition of Early Netherlandish works of art. There is the particular case of madeira Island which has many works of art of that style, including the reredos of Sé do Funchal (c. 1510), an E.N work of art executed in Lisbon by a Flemish master, and many others in churches and museums in the island, some of them are considered by experts to be even of higher quality than those which are nowadays in Flanders by the same painters (I recall teh case of a Van Cleves). There are many of those works of art in Portugal mainland as well, both in place and in museums. Many of those works of art were acquired directly in the Flemish ports where Madeira Island was engaged in the commerce of sugar, it was usual to send the sugar there and bring back those commissioned works of arts to our churches and private chapels.
• The "Portuguese" azulejo, which has been nowadays elevated to the state of a symbol of the country, is actually a derivative of Delft blue tiles from the Netherlands. Initially the panels and individual themed tiles were all imported from the Netherlands, and we have a large heritage of them around.

Please consider including Portugal in the project. I can help personally with the Madeira Island Dutch heritage, as I live here.

Interesting island and country called after Maurice, prince of Orange in 17th century and owned by the Dutch several years.

Swedish Nationalmuseum in Stockholm

This set of metadata has been released on Wikidata and Commons, complete with hi-res images. Because everything is so well documented and looks so wonderful, this would be a great way to get started writing relevant articles or just adding these images to existing articles. There is a huge amount of high-quality Dutch art in there - love the Van Goghs! See en:User:Jane023/Paintings in the Nationalmuseum Stockholm for inspiration. Emigration/immigration as well?

@Spinster, @Elisabethwiessner: The introduction states "Over the centuries, the Netherlands have developed close ties with many countries through trade and colonialism. Shared cultural heritage has evolved in the Netherlands and in these countries." So trade and colonialism: are cultural heritage ties by emigration and immigration included?

Millions of descendants of Dutch immigrants live in Canada (Vancouver, British Columbia), the US, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, etc. On the other hand, in NL there are many German, Indonesian and Caribbean, Jewish, Hungarian, South African, Eritrean, Ghanese etc. (descendants of) immigrants and of course Moroccans, Kurds and Turcs. Their shared heritage might be included in the project, or at least mentioned. Of course there is in many cases (list of countries in project) overlap with ties "through trade and colonialism".

Or these ties could be excluded explicitly for clarity, as being beyond the scope of this project. Thanks for considering, Hansmuller (talk) 19:44, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

Tirtanadi Water Tower

Would like to check if the Netherlands have any historical records of en:Tirtanadi Water Tower in Medan, Indonesia. It is known that this water tower is built during Dutch colonial era (assumed to be 1908, as written on the tower base), but the article is still very short and has no reference yet. Old Audio Recording from 1920-1950 (Music or Historical Speech)

I saw a collection of Indonesian old Kerontjong Music in this KITLV audio archives page from 1900-1960, and also a project run by WFMU through Free Music Archive website called Antique Phonograph Music Program. Inspired by these movements, I am curious if you could gain access for collection of Indonesian old audio recordings, and make it available online on Wikimedia Commons project. Because, by seeing the date of publication of that recordings (mostly the 1900-1940 recordings), I assume that, potentialy, a lot of that recordings are already in Public Domain, and ready to be shared in a more 'open' way, in Wikimedia Commons, for example. Frans Post at Itaú Cultural in São Paulo, Brazil

@AWossink: Yup. Itaú Cultural has a large collection, most of which is not publicly displayed. Their total collection has 15,000 pieces, including art works by Post that were not on display this weekend. They have a full section on Dutch art in the period of colonial Brazil, one of the largest in the world according to them. A while ago we reached out to them for a GLAM prospect; they were interested, but have not replied since then. Another GLAM initiative we are starting is with the Museu Paulista in São Paulo, a museum that is currently closed but will definitely have Dutch colonial work that will be of interest to the project "The Netherlands and the world". I know the pictures I took are not of high quality --I just used my phone--, but since you have the impression that they contribute I am happy to have done the upload. Is there an appropriate way I should report this contribution? I am not sure if this s relevant, but I am a member of the Wikimedia Community User Group Brasil. --Joalpe (talk) 12:54, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

The Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform aims to be a place where (Dutch) GLAMs and Wikimedia volunteers can interact to help bring digitised collections to Wikimedia Commons. The platform went online in April 2017. A few months later, we would now like to collect some feedback on the platform:

• If you’ve signed up on the platform but never got around to using it, or if you looked at the platform but didn’t sign up, we would like to hear about that.

• If you’ve never heard of the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform before, we would like to hear about that too.

• In general, we are also interested to get feedback about the platform itself. So, whether you’ve already had a look at it, or just learned about it from this email, we would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to browse the website and share with us your thoughts on its purpose, the available functionality, the layout, things that you’re missing that should be there, suggestions, etc.
