Movement news items for November 2011

As announced last month, suggestions are welcome for important topics to cover in the "other movement news" part. The following topics are covered in the current draft at the moment:

• Wikimania videos
• French freedom of panorama
• Al Jazeera image donation

Notification of the next issue of Wikimedia Highlights

Is there talk page or other notification of these highlights? As the Signpost does:

If not, can this be implemented? How does one get notified of new editions of Wikimedia Highlights? I don't want to be notified by the watchlist for the meta wiki, or my talk page here. I rarely check either of them. By the way, when will there be a global watchlist?

Yes, that's a good idea, and on here someone just asked the same question. (BTW, for the Signpost, I had set this up myself together with MZMcBride last year. In my experience it needs a bit of time to grow, but many people seem to have found it useful eventually.)

It needs some thinking about the format of the notification message - I guess a copy of the TOC might work, I put a mockup below, feel free to improve - and especially about how to do this in a scalable way for the translations (many non-English speakers would rather be informed when a translation in their language comes out).

For now, I have set up a subscription page for the English version: Global message delivery/Targets/Wikimedia Highlights, you are welcome to subscribe by adding your user name there, and in early January you should find the message about the December Highlights on your talk page on your home project.

We looked at the second one as well - it's an interesting project, and the EU support is notable, but in the end we were a bit on the fence about whether this counted among the three or four most important news items from the whole movement during that month. Many thanks for the suggestions (also those per email)! This issue is out now and will soon be ready for translation. Wikidata, the Tamil contest and Highbeam are covered as separate items. The Rolls Challenge and the Welsh meetup fit together as a Monmouth item and the BR Wikipedian in Residence is part of a combined WiR item. The Malayalam conference was already mentioned in the WMF highlights part, the Dutch hire and the CCCB workshop seemed a bit thin as isolated items, and I didn't have enough information about the tagging and assessing item. Easy translation

I think the following system could be used to facilitate (by automating it and by using the translation memory). In particular, MediaWiki has 1/ a function to automatically translate the dates in the page language (i.e. on "/de" pages, it’s Deutsch), 2/ a function to automatically format the numbers in the page language, and 3/ the Translate extension can astract some parts of the messages (e.g. the figures). By combining these three features, the "Data and Trends" and "Financials" sections can be quite automated.

E.g. "Global unique visitors for August" could become

"Global unique visitors for {{#time:F|2000-08}}"

(year is useless but mandatory). And the translation memory will keep it for every month (hence reduce the errors of the translators selectionning a wrong month).

E.g. "497 million (+0.97% compared with July; +8.90% compared with the previous year)" could become

"{{formatnum:497}} million (+0.97}}% compared with July; +{{formatnum:8.90}}% compared with the previous year)"

I do not see a way to abstract the "million" (but should change before a long time) and the plus/minus (so there will be a maximum of four messages in the translation memory).

Hi Seb35, thanks for these useful suggestions!

I had already started using translation variables in the November edition, but clearly there is more potential here, as you point out. I will try to use your approach for the "Data and Trends" section of the December edition, which is scheduled to go out on Tuesday.

The "formatnum" template should also be really useful for the "Financials" section, but there still is another issue I'm wondering about, maybe you have thoughts about that as well: The reason why we made these amounts translatable was not just to make the number formatting (i.e. thousands separators) adaptable to the local language, but also the currency format; IIRC some translators requested that. E.g. "$276,719" (English) vs. "276 719 $" (Russian/French) or "464.533 USD" (German). It seems to me that even when using the tvar+formatnum approach, it would still be necessary to have a separate translation unit for each amount (with rather trivial content, but they would still all need to be manually process by translators). Perhaps at this point it's not worth stating the currency each time, and instead we just include a translatable note "all amounts in USD" or such.

BTW, a long time ago (before translation memory and TNT became available), Amir had suggested to use templates for these two sections, but there are some problems with that, for example the fact that the composition of the Financials table changes every so often - the translation memory approach is much more forgiving to that.

Hi rubin16, the English version was actually already sent out on December 11 (example). There is no deadline for the translations, I try to send them out separately for each language right after they are finished. But of course it is better if they reach the readers sooner than later. Thanks for working on the Russian translation!

Is there a VisualEditor newsletter template like this one for transcluding the Signpost?:

Hi Timeshifter, that's a cool idea, but unfortunately it is probably not possible to do this across wikis in the same way it's done for the Signpost (interwiki transclusion doesn't exist yet).

See the version history - it was translated by an anonymous editor with a Brazilian IP. The translation can be improved here. Unfortunately it's not always feasible to have these translations vetted by an experienced editor who is native speaker before they are announced, although I would love see more of that integrated into the process.
