www.somewhere.org_portal? edit

Krinkle, we are using www.somewhere.org_template to hold the portal HTML, right? So we can delete www.somewhere.org_portal, right? And we can delete from this Project portals/links the following, right?:

{{#ifexist: {{{1|www.wikipedia.org}}} portal | • [[{{{1}}} portal|portal]] | }}

This is too complicated. I think the www.somewhere.org_portal pages are not used anymore and can be deleted, but how should I know? I'm reluctant to delete as a newbe, however, may I? Or will you do it for us?... Thx! --Rogerhc (talk) 03:02, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think the portal pages are outdated. You can probably tag them with {{archive}}, or even {{looks useless}} ;), but maybe you should wait for more input (possibly from someone who is/was involved in the portal pages). Still dreading "life on Meta"? πr2 (t • c) 04:41, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
I previously wrapped them by #ifexist so we only see the ones existing and don't output red links like "This should be created" anymore. The idea is that if they should be deleted, the pages themselves can be deleted at which point the links will disappear. Right now we're unsure what to do with them, so this way we see the links to portals that exist as a reminder I guess? I'll look through server configurations soon and check if there are any references left to this. –Krinkletalk 11:58, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yep, looks like they're still configured. Although they are optional (the portals don't have to exist) they can exist and will be used if they exist. The way it works is like this
The _template is used as raw HTML. The _portal is rendered from wikitext. It replaces $1 in the template with the portal rendering. This is presumably a leftover from an old construct that is no longer in use. I'd say we delete them and file a ticket for removing that configuration. –Krinkletalk 12:04, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
  Done, see also bugzilla:38167. –Krinkletalk 12:47, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I think best to remove things like that that are not the current system so that when newcomers try to figure out the system by examining it they will figure out the current system and not find themselves following out of date process. Thx. :) -Rogerhc (talk) 03:00, 20 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
