Dashboard data dump edit

Hi there, I am Abd Alsattar Ardati, a Computer Science PhD student at the University of St Andrews. I am planning to propose a project that involves analysing the (https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/) data (programms, participants and articles ect..). Is there any way to get data dumps from this dashboard tool? And does this raise any ethical issues? Best, Abd Alsattar Ardati (talk) 23:15, 4 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Abd Alsattar Ardati: Hi, and sorry for the slow reply! Much of the data that you're looking for can be downloaded in CSV format from the Dashboard. There's no option to get a consolidated data dump from the whole system at once, but anything you can see on the Dashboard is public data, and most of it can be downloaded. What are you looking for specifically? Feel free to follow up by email (sage at wikiedu.org)--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:06, 11 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Dashboard not updating edit

Hello,

I wish to request for an update to this dashboard: https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Moleskine_Foundation/AfroCuration_December_2020# It hasn't been updated in 9 days.

Thanks. Shahadusadik (talk) 19:32, 5 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

User edits outside an event edit

I just joined a new edit-a-thon event and the program's dashboard imported many of my other edits unrelated to the event before I joined. It showed my older edits in the Activity tab and also really screwed up the statistics for it. I also looked at an event I attended a couple years ago, and it continues to show articles and activity that occurred after the event. I feel like this really undermines the usefulness of the dashboard and tools when it can't be configured to only show the edits made in connection to the event, with my outside edits overwhelming those made by my colleagues. Thanks, Reywas92 (talk) 20:56, 5 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Reywas92: If you click 'Show Course Specific' on the Activity tab, it will limit it to edits that are counted for the statistics. For newcomer-focused events, it can be useful to show more recent edits that happned after the event ended, but we recently added the option to limit it for cases like yours.--Ragesoss (talk) 21:37, 8 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Stats for campaign edit

Hi,

When I try to "download stats" for a campaign, wiht either "Editor usernames" or "Editors by course", I get no results. Apparently because the programs are private. As I'm organizer (of the campaign) and facilitator (of each programs), is there a way to get the stats for all the programs at once?

Campaign organizer – rights edit

Hi, as a campaign organizer, I am able to edit programs within the campaign. All seems to work but adding participants to a program. I was able to edit a description of this program. But I was unable to add participants (or event add myself as another facilitator). The error message says "Only participants of this course may do that." --Vojtěch Veselý (talk) 22:30, 10 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Vojtěch Veselý: that event ended months ago, are you having this problem with open/future events as well? — xaosflux Talk 14:42, 11 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Xaosflux: I just tried it in an active program and yes, the result is the same.--Vojtěch Veselý (talk) 17:06, 11 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Vojtěch Veselý: the best I can tell, this is working as designed. Campaign organizers are able to run certain campaign reports, but are not automatically facilitators of all programs - when an organizer creates a program they can add any number of facilitators (and can add them after the fact). Is there a program that only has inactive/unavailable facilitators right now that you need to take over? — xaosflux Talk 17:15, 11 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Edits not tracking? edit

It looks like it's working now. Long-running events like this begin in the slowest update queue, so they can take a little while before the first data starts showing up. (The Dashboard does this to optimize for short events like editathons so that they get timely data while the event is still going on.)--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:21, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Recent edits for each editor on a project edit

Hello, I am using the Dashboard to track edits by a handful of editors on the University of Washington PCC Wikidata Pilot Project. Right now, when I click on "editors", the Dashboard shows that most of our editors have made zero edits in the past week, which is false. Can anyone help us troubleshoot or explain why this is happening? Thank you, --Clements.UWLib (talk) 22:21, 3 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

(We discussed this over email, so I'm just following up on-wiki in case others are curious.) This was because of the query tool at wikiedudashboard.toolforge.org running out of memory when trying to retrieve revisions for the very active editors in this program. I fixed it last week by increasing the memory limit for the tool.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:04, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Mixed name or username of facilitator edit

Please check this:

  • the Facilitators field in this course is filled with "Geraki (geraki, cbratsas)"
  • Cbratsas is another person that we had collaborated in past courses, I am not sure how I mixed those two names in some previous course, but now it is displayed like this in every course.
  • In my profile there is nothing like that.

I cannot find how to change it. -Geraki TL 16:28, 16 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Geraki: I've fixed this. Early on, Programs & Events Dashboard prompted users for their real name when they first signed in, which you must have accidentally filled out "geraki, cbratsas". That becomes automatically added as your real name for any programs you create. (It's possible to change the real name you've got set using this form: https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/onboarding .) I've cleared that entry from both your account and all the programs you've set up, so it shouldn't happen any more.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:08, 16 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Project stats not updating edit

Hi there, the stats for my current project hasn't updated in five days now, when it used to update a few times every day. Is this an issue with program, and is there a way for me to manually get the stats to update? --Prosperosity (talk) 07:41, 21 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Prosperosity: It's not an issue specific to this program; most moderately active programs go about 5 days between updates right now, because of some changes I made recently to improve the update frequency and reduce the system load caused by the largest programs. I'm working on adjusting the system to rebalance the update priorities, and hopefully bring the update frequency for moderately active programs like this one back up to once per day or better. It may take a little while to get there.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:52, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Since I posted this it's updated once already. --Prosperosity (talk) 02:26, 23 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Pageviews compared to pageviews edit

I find the number of pageveiws for articles a bit confusing in the dashboard, and need some help to sort it out when comparing to the pageview tool. For a project we are doing with a bunch of students, Kulturhistoria på Wikipedia som gymnasiearbete, the number of views according to the stats are:

It's hard to believe and be happy about the reported 71.9K Article views. Is there a reason for the difference and is it possible to get more accurate numbers to the dashboard? /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 11:07, 26 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Axel Pettersson (WMSE): The way the Dashboard estimates pageviews is based on finding the average daily views for given article, and multiplying that by the number of days since a student made their first edit to it. In this case, it's finding a high average view count based on the days since those articles entered mainspace, but it's treating them as if they were getting that many views daily since the first sandbox edit in the page history. There's not currently a way to get more accurate pageview numbers from the dashboard; we switched to this less accurate estimation method because updating the complete pageview stats for every article created too much system load.--Ragesoss (talk) 14:41, 26 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ragesoss: Hmmm, thanks, that explains things. I guess that for this project, where students start editing during the fall (October for Jugend i Sverige) and publish/move to mainspace in february, followed by a spike due to new article interest by the community, the estimate will be off for quite a while before things settle. That also explains why the expanded older articles, like Stenungsund are more in line. For shorter edit-a-thons i might me useful, but not in this case. /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 15:42, 26 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

User data does not appear on the program page edit

Hello to the dashboard team,

I have opened a program page designed to track user activity in one of the WMIL programs from the beginning of 2020 until its end. I see that the data on these users do not appear on the program page (at least as of this moment). Is the reason that the set date for the end of the follow-up has already passed? And if so, can it be solved?

@99of9: It seems to be working. Can you please specify an edit that should be showing up and is not? --Joalpe (talk) 15:33, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Currently, it can take a bit of time — up to several days — before a new program starts getting data. (Editathons that only track edits for 1 or 2 days get quicker updates.) I'm working on some fixes for how the system prioritizes which programs to update, which should help with this kind of problem.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:53, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Cannot edit archived programs edit

I created a new program for test last month and intended to edit it for the actual event today but I cannot do that. The calendar is all greyed out and I cannot delete the campaign for the program, maybe because the program is already archived. But I would love to be able to edit it so the campaign doesn't get filled up with test programs. Rima H (WMID) (talk) 03:29, 15 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Rima H (WMID): Which program? You should be able to edit even after it's archived, as long as you are one of the facilitators.--Ragesoss (talk) 19:40, 15 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I just checked it again. For removing campaigns, it turns out I need to click on the plus sign to be able to see the minus sign to remove a campaign. As for the date, apparently I need to change activity tracking start and end first, and then the event start and end will adjust their time accordingly. After saving it when I edit it again, the event start and end calendar will show some parts that's not greyed out. Rima H (WMID) (talk) 01:12, 16 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Rodelar: Hi! I'm not sure from your description exactly what went wrong. Did the editor select the article from the Available Articles list, or did they type in the same title as one of the Available Articles? If they selected it from the list, the Dashboard is supposed to remove it from the list, but if they typed it in without choosing it from the list, the copy on the Available Articles list will remain. Either way, this shouldn't affect the stats.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:34, 27 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Data disruptions edit

Hello to the dashboard team,

I recently opened a page for a WMIL program, and I notice that there are some surprising disruptions: on the one hand, some of the students 'contributions are not made at all, and on the other hand, some of the students' contributions are not displayed.

See for example on the "Activity" page:

  • User N1626 is credited with contributing to this page, and user שמעון בארי is credited with contributing to this page. In practice these users have not edited these pages (and these pages appear in a language I did not request to be tracked at all).
  • The hebrew articles "ידיד לחינוך" and "חברת החשמל לישראל" were edited by Mashalif and 1626 users (respectively). However, this is not documented on the course page in the dashboard.

Can you help me solve these problems?

In gratitude and many thanks,

Bug issues ? edit

I have been contacted by a linguistics professor who is relying on the outreach dashboard to follow his own contributions as well as his students', on French Wikipedia. For information, here is a link to the dashboard in question.

Mushushu: Sorry for the service disruption. It looks like you were able to join once the system was back online. If there are any continuing problems, please let me know.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:04, 11 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Right now, I cannot open outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org at all, there is this error: NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID --Vojtěch Veselý (talk) 09:33, 6 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Vojtěch Veselý: I'm not sure what caused that error, which isn't one I've seen before on outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org. It might have been a temporary DNS problem with Wikimedia Cloud. Let me know if you run into it again.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:04, 11 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sage (Wiki Ed): Sure, thanks for the reply. --Vojtěch Veselý (talk) 19:23, 11 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

International Museum Day 2021 edit

Nehme ich jetzt noch am Wettbewerb teil, oder bin ich draußen, oder was mache ich falsch? Ich sehe mich plötzlich nicht mehr in der Autorenübersicht zum "International Museum Day 2021". --Wuselig (talk) 04:45, 7 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

I apologize for the service disruption. It looks like you joined the "International Museum Day 2021" and it tracked your edits, once service was restored.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:07, 11 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Internal server error edit

Please check the server as we currently seem to be getting a lot of "internal server error" reports when trying to use the Dashboard.--Discott (talk) 08:01, 7 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Discott: Thank you for reporting the problem. We should have a more stable system soon; some changes I made today will hopefully improve its capacity, but a bigger change within the next few months should make it much more stable going forward.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:08, 11 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Crashing and Errors edit

Hi there,

Love the Dashboard, but we've been getting constant errors recently. We are using the Dashboard for the 1Lib1Ref campaign and are a bit worried if it will hold up. The errors generally say Internal Server Error.

https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Wikimedia_Australia_and_Wikimedia_Aotearoa_New_Zealand/1Lib1Ref_Australia_and_Aotearoa_New_Zealand_2021/home

Can you assist us in any way?

Other changes we thought about suggesting based on our use of the Dashboard lately include:

  • the URL should not change if you edit the event
  • the URLs are so long it means you have to make a shortened URL for workshops, and because it is an external site the Wikipedia shortened url tool won't accept it
  • Could there be some sort of QR code generator for users to add themselves to a particular dashboard at an event/edit-a-thon?

Many thanks!

Thanks for the feedback! I'm working on making the system more stable; some recent changes should help, and some bigger changes in the next couple of months ought to make it highly reliable. As for the other ideas... I think the idea of QR codes to let users join a particular event make a lot of sense, potentially along with a URL shortener service that works for Dashboard URLs. As for URLs changing, the only time this happens now is if you change the title, institution or term fields (or the passcode), as these are used to construct the URL of a program. We need to make sure people can change typos in those fields and not get stuck with typo'd URL.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:14, 11 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Delete a dashboard edit

Finally, this edition was not be organised, and this dashboard has to be deleted. https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Art_i_feminisme_BCN/Art_i_feminisme_BCN_2021_a_Mas_Gai%C3%A0_(17_i_18_d'abril_del_2021) Could you please eliminate it? I don't know how can I do it.Tiputini (talk) 13:57, 9 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Dashboard not showing any statistics since December 2020 edit

I set up a dashboard for a project at https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Texas_A_and_M_University/Wikidata_Pilot_at_TAMU_Libraries?enroll=

Although my project team and I have added over 61 items to Wikidata since then, the statistics have not been updated. It says there is only one edit by me when there have been many others since then. Is there anything that we can do to get them to show up? Do we have to be logged in to the dashboard every time we do something in Wikidata?

Jeannette Ho (talk) 00:00, 11 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Jeannette Ho: Hi! It looks like that project is set to only track contributions to English Wikipedia. If you click 'Edit Details' and add Wikidata as tracked wiki, then it will start picking up Wikidata activity (including any activity back to the start date).--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:16, 11 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! I have set it to Wikidata instead. How soon can we expect the stats to reflect edits we have made to Wikidata? Jeannette Ho (talk) 17:11, 12 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Jeannette Ho: Currently, most programs get an update every 30 minutes to 2 hours. It looks like yours is showing data for all the Wikidata activity now.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:50, 12 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
