GDC campaign next steps
edit- Action by Oct. 31: Read the final text of the Global Digital Compact and let WMF team know if you see any red flags. This is essential so we can confirm that yes, indeed, we will endorse the final version of the GDC as a movement. It will also help us know what to push in implementation. This action will be added to our campaign page as always.
- Are you working on a G20 or WSIS+20 event? Let the group know what you've got in the works, and we can coordinate to support each other.
GDC Campaign Closing Debrief Call | Oct. 17, 2024
editDetails: Thursday, October 17th @ 14:00 - 15:30 UTC (check local time).
- Join Zoom Meeting https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/81192370706
- Meeting ID: 811 9237 0706
Why: The GDC has been an important example of how we collaborate as a movement to engage policymakers. We want to take our learnings from this to apply to our future advocacy efforts. Help us capture our successes to replicate and challenges to solve on a debrief call.
What: 90-minute Zoom call in which we will recap what happened at UNGA and have a capacity building portion. For the UNGA recap, we will cover how our messaging landed, what corridor conversations were had, and what we’re taking forward from this experience). We will take the GDC campaign as a case study to review how to develop a campaign strategy around a specific event.
Who: The call will be open to all members of the advocacy network so we can continue to learn from each other. The call will be recorded - you can email Ziski Putz for access to the recording.
Core Working Group Updates & Actions | Sept. 11 - 27 2024
editThe week of September 20-27 marks the culmination of our campaign. Notably, the Summit of the Future, during which the GDC should be finalized.
Below is an overview of our plans before, during and after that week, as well as how you can support this final push in our GDC campaign.
A) WIKIMEDIA EVENT @ SUMMIT OF THE FUTURE ACTION DAYS (Sept. 20 - 21)
- What: The Summit of the Future Action Days exist to provide additional opportunities for engagement across civil society, academia, and the private sector. The focus is on multistakeholder partnerships, emphasizing the need for collective action to build a more inclusive and networked multilateral system.
- Wikimedia is hosting an official side event: “The Power of the Commons: Digital Public Goods for a More Secure, Inclusive, and Resilient World.” The event is on Sept. 21 @ 11:15 - 12:30 PM EDT. This is a massive win for us and it came from real teamwork! It is co-sponsored by the UN Member State Delegations of Germany, Mexico, and Poland, and the UN Office of the Secretary-General's Envoy on Technology, as well as the organizations Access Now, TUM Think Tank, Network of Centers, Wikimedia Deutschland, Wikimedia Czech Republic, Wikimedia Polska, and Wikimedia Europe.
- 👉 How you can help: Amplify the event by sharing our social media posts and event details ahead of time.
B) CEO MARYANA ISKANDER SPEAKING IN VIDEO
- What: Maryana will speak in a video that will be shown at the plenary session. The session is on Sept. 21 @ 14:30 - 16:45 PM EDT. The title is “Laying the Foundations of a Digital Future for All." It will explore inclusive, safe, and sustainable innovation and technology, focusing on the Global Digital Compact’s principles and advancing AI for humanity’s benefit.
- 👉 How you can help: If you like what she said, consider sharing the clip or quote on social media after the event!
C) MEDIA WORK
- What: We will be publishing a press release and blog post about the GDC around Sept. 21, and will also be pitching our story to various media outlets. This will be supported by social media work including posts on platforms like X and LinkedIn.
- 👉 How you can help: Support by amplifying these social media posts and sharing messages on your channels. We will send a toolkit for you to adapt to your needs.
Core Working Group Actions | April 8 - 12, 2024
edit1. By April 12 | Add key stakeholders to list
- What: Help us identify the following people for your countries: (1) ambassador to the UN Mission, and (2) the UN Tech Envoy from your country. Add their info here.
- Why: We need to ensure that the right people at country missions to the UN have the resources they need to understand our asks. This means we need to formally send our open letter to representatives of key member states. We will share an email template later this month and ask you to contact them.
- How: Go to the website of your permanent mission (for example, I would google 'Permanent Mission of Austria to the UN’). The staff are usually listed, as well as their responsibilities. This email should go to the ambassador if and/or the general press email listed for the mission, and if identifiable, then also the staff member responsible for GDC. You can also look if there is an email associated with the GDC submission from your country. functionary working on this which is sometimes listed in the staff details OR it might be the person listed as responsible in the GDC submission.
2. By April 12 | Email Ziski a quote for Diff blog post
- What: (If you want) Send Ziski an email by Friday with a quote about why you're involved in the GDC work and why you think this is important for the movement.
- Why: We will be publishing a Diff blog post on the day that the open letter is released (April 23). It will describe what we're trying to achieve with our GDC campaign, why we think this is important, and encourage other movement members to sign the letter. This information is for the movement, and you are part of the movement - I want to make sure your voices are included. I'd like to include quotes from 4 or more of you.
- Open to other thoughts!

Core Working Group Actions | March 22, 2024
editNext steps
- Confirm you are in the core working group. Action: Add your name to the Meta-Wiki page or correct me if you should not be in the group.
- Review Open Letter by April 5. On Monday, March 25th I will share a rough draft of an open letter for your feedback, which is due April 5. This open letter will outline our positions on the three core topics we identified as crucial for our movement. The goal is to have it signed by WMF and members of the core working group, and then release it publicly at a strategic time after the first reading of the zero draft. Details will be shared in my next email on Monday. Deadlines you need to know are: April 5 is the deadline for your input; April 15-17 is the timeline for you to review the final version and add your group's signature. Action: Save the dates and watch your inbox on Monday.
- Potential GDC session at Wikimedia Summit April 19-21. Wikimedia Summit is taking place in Berlin from April 19-21. Friederike will look into organizing a meet-up for those of you planning on being in Berlin, so that this core group has a chance to connect in-person. Action: Email Friederike to RSVP if you will or won't be in Berlin for the Summit.
- Help us identify which countries we should try to engage. This core working group is going to do what Wikimedians do best - crowdsource! As a group, we need to identify which countries we should try to engage in order to influence the final product. Action: The next step is therefore for everyone to do some research and identify what your country's position is on the GDC (if they've stated this publicly!), and add what you've discovered to our page. You can: (a) look at your government's websites to see if they've shared anything about the GDC; (b) look through the submissions from last year; (c) look through the recording of the informal consultations from this year (here's an example from the EU); (d) share if you have existing relationships with the Permanent Mission to the UN, or good existing relationships with your government or ministries.
