Requests for new languages/Wikiversity Tamil 2

submitted verification final decision

Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).

The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved.

  • Check that the project does not already exist (see list).
  • Obtain an ISO 639 code
  • Ensure the requested language is sufficiently unique that it could not exist on a more general wiki.
  • Ensure that there are a sufficient number of native editors of that language to merit an edition in that language.

    This proposal is on hold:

Proposal is on hold. If you really want a Tamil Wikiversity, start creating content at Beta Wikiversity. For LangCom: StevenJ81 (talk) 22:30, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code ta (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Tamil Language name in English
Language name தமிழ் Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q5885 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links previous request Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name விக்கிப்பல்கலைக்கழகம் "Wikiversity" in your language
Project namespace விக்கிப்பல்கலைக்கழகம் usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace விக்கிப்பல்கலைக்கழகம் பேச்சு "Wikiversity talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone UTC "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Proposal

edit

About one year ago, the proposal to have Tamil Wikiversity was rejected because of stale, well we agree that, because in that time Wikimedia community members in Tamil-Nadu were having too much of busy business time, to have some time periods to create tawikiversity. But now, since the start of golden weekends in India, the situation of tawikiversity can be re-considered now. With more than 65,000,000 first-language speakers, having many Tamil medium Engineering courses and having a lot of Tamil Universities, Wikiversity Tamil will do better for those students who are studying through Tamil and also English of Tamil native speakers. --2409:8902:9321:D7C0:34F4:7492:EB5F:578C 02:26, 31 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

For my language, i am interested but i need guidelines to contribute in the "Beta" becoz i am new to this project.--Info-farmer (talk) 02:17, 16 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Go to betawikiversity:Wikiversity:Babel and request help there. StevenJ81 (talk) 13:01, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid that there won't have any people who work hard on that project even you asked, because my message to request them to enable Wikidata access support has been ignored for half years. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 13:16, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Making Tamil Wikiversity is not difficult if you have enough contributors and continuous contributions. You can start by creating a mainpage. But mainpage in Tamil language is here, in my thinking. Now, You can make free lectures into your own language. Just add [[Category:TA]]. That's all. What you need is contributions with your colleagues. Once sufficient activity has been identified, the language committee will judge the establishment. --Sotiale (talk) 09:50, 8 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Tamil has many L1 and L2 speakers to create Wikiversity --Sharouser (talk) 03:38, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
