Requests for new languages/Wikisource Malay

submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code ms (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Malay Language name in English
Language name Bahasa Melayu Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q9237 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Malay Wikipedia Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name Wikisumber "Wikisource" in your language
Project namespace Wikisumber usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace Perbincangan Wikisumber "Wikisource talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:Wikisource-logo-ms.svg This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/Kuala Lumpur "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces Ruang nama tambahan (Additional namespaces) :
  • "Laman" (Page)
  • "Perbincangan laman" (Page talk)
  • "Indeks" (Index)
  • "Perbincangan indeks" (Index talk)
  • "Pengarang" (Author)
  • "Perbincangan pengarang" (Author talk)
  • "Terjemahan" (Translation)
  • "Perbincangan terjemahan" (Translation talk).
For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Proposal

edit

This is a proposal for a new Wikisource project in Malay. There is a localized main page in the multilingual wikisource, though not currently maintained. There are lots of historical and important Malay documents that can be digitized. We have done a bit of work, see oldwikisource:Perlembagaan Persekutuan Malaysia (Constitution of Malaysia). Arguments in favour

We must have wikisource ms, because we need other wikipedia community languages to know that our language wiki is very productive. It is also important, to enrich our Malay language wiki so that other wiki community too will know our beautiful and colourful Malay language culture. So that's why we must have wikisource ms! ASAP. — Imran Al-Sahih 16:35, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nothin? An insufficient project in the Incubator will do the trick. GerardM 09:16, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Language code ms

edit

Hi, I have some consideration about the language code. Back when ms.wikipedia was made (26 October 2002), the language code ms (639-1) was different from the language code ms (639-3:msa) today. At that time, ms was considered single language, but now, it has been designated as macro language. In the request page, the link provided is SIL:msa, while the Glottolog link msa is incorrect and should have been stan1306. If this ms.wikisource is created, then it means all documents from thirty-six individual language in 3 different countries are eligible to be hosted there, including Indonesian language, which has already own its own Wikisource (s:id:). If this is what the community wanted, then I think it's fine to proceed.

But if they only want to host documents in en:Standard Malay, or Malaysian Malay, then I don't agree that we continue using "ms", but rather "zsm" for Standard Malay (SIL:zsm, Glottolog:zsm/stan1306), or "zlm" for Malay (individual language) (SIL:zlm, Glottolog:zlm/mala1479). So, are they also againsting to collect contents in Old Malay (omy)? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:37, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Localisation effort

edit

Currently 99.11% of the MediaWiki messages and 4.15% of the messages used in the extensions used by the Wikimedia Foundation have been localised in Betawiki. Thanks, GerardM 07:20, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We still need the settings - please fill in the table at the top of this page, including the translations for the Wikisource-specific namespaces. --MF-W 09:21, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
