Requests for new languages/Wikiquote Twi

submitted verification final decision
Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).

The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved.

  • Check that the project does not already exist (see list).
  • Obtain an ISO 639 code
  • Ensure the requested language is sufficiently unique that it could not exist on a more general wiki.
  • Ensure that there are a sufficient number of native editors of that language to merit an edition in that language.
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Proposal edit

Twi is one of the many languages spoken in Ghana and it is a diverse language which about 70% of the Ghanaian population speaks it. Its native speakers are the Akan Ethnic group that comprises Asante, Fante, Akyem, Bono, Akuapim and at least about 30% of all other ethnic groups or tribes in Ghana speak the Twi language and even foreigners who have lived in the country for more than a year or two. It is the mother language used to trade in all the local markets in Ghana and even some of the super markets in Ghana. Twi is an old language with its independent heritage and history and it originate from the old Ghana empire and it's the largest spoken language in Ghana. The Twi language is studied in most schools in Ghana, primary schools, and most of the secondary schools. It is also a course of study in many higher institutions like the universities across the country Ghana. The language has its own Wiki like Twi Wikipedia and a group of young volunteers who are contributors to the Twi Wikipedia platform, Wikicommons and Wikidata. All the information on Wikidata and Wikicommons are contributed in the Twi language by these contributors. There has been an exceptional performance by the contributors and a tremendous increase in contributions from the Twi Language Community on the various Wikipedia platforms. The Twi language has interesting quotations from many noticeable people who have articles sitting beautifully on Wikipedia and I believe if this new Twi Wikiquote is created, it will increase the language diversity as well as Wikipedia readability. This will also give room to people who are mostly interested in quotes to also contribute their quota to the Wikipedia platforms and by so doing we will have more contributors on Wikipedia and also it will be a way of saving the rich quotes of noticeable people for educational and research purposes.Jemima2019 (talk) 20:32, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rsaawah (talk) 12:40, 28 March 2023 (UTC) I am Saawah Rebecca and I strongly support this project. As Ghanaians, our language(Twi) is our identity and so using it on a respected platform like Wikipedia will help keep our identity and make our language known too.[reply]
