Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Mauritian Creole

submitted verification final decision

This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Mauritian Creole enjoys a speaking population of nearly 1.3 million speakers. It is the lingua franca of Mauritius and is spoken widely by Mauritians throughout all parts of the island by all classes of people. A Mauritian Creole translation of the Holy Bible is under way.

Mauritian Creole is used vastly for rapid dissemination of information among islanders, not commonly for official purposes or formal situations. It is not formalized, and is based and written on French sounds and writing. The Mauritian Creole Speaking Union has been set up in Mauritius and the language is also taught at primary schools. The Government of Mauritius is planning to introduce the language in secondary schools. Created by 202.36.179.66, 2 September 2008

Arguments in favour

  • Kreol is a language understood by a multi-cultural, multi-languaged country. If you're Indo-Mauritian, Sino-Mauritian, Franco-Mauritian or whatever, everyone, even though they may speak other languages at home, can converse with one another in Kreol. Don't let it go the way of that other Mauritian ....the dodo! unsigned by 91.105.51.172 on 13:46, 25 October 2008.
  • I support a Kreol wikipedia. Kreol is a french based creole, so the large french speaking wikipedian community should be able to learn the language with relative ease and contribute in Kreol. Also, something like this could help improve the illiteracy problem in Mauritius. And, if this gets approved, I will make a logo in Kreol for the new Kreol wikipedia :)--Mikewazhere 00:18, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • There is a dictionary for Mauritian Creole (Diksioner Morisien) by Arnaud Carpooran, which can be used for standardising the spelling. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ricecakes (talk) 22:30, 26 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have heard that the creole is a binding factor between the different ethnicities in Mauritius, this Wikipedia could really help. --92.8.217.70 12:26, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, it is a nice idea! it will help Mauritian citizens. --Starts 11:20, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I support because it would help the persons to use Wikipedia in their native language --Moris231 3 November 2014, 07:05 (UTC)
  • Support, Mauritian Creole has many native speakers and they deserve to have a Wikipedia in their own language. TerranBoy (talk) 09:36, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate of Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Mauritian Creole? Please see incubator:Wp/mfe. πr2 (t • c) 14:55, 16 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That seems to be indeed the case. The code given here, "mu", is invalid, but the linked Wikipedia article obviously refers to mfe. I will notify the proposer on enwiki. --MF-W 00:33, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This edit doesn't make it any better, as kr is the code for Kanuri. --MF-W 15:34, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, now the code has been set to mfe. Luxihans, is there anything that makes you think that you are proposing a different language version of Wikipedia than Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Mauritian Creole? --18:27, 17 March 2013 (UTC)
Most languages in the world exist in Wikipedia. I think Wikipedia should also be in Mauritian Creole as many people in Mauritius can't understand English. --User:Luxihans 4:26, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Can they understand French? πr2 (t • c) 16:26, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A little bit... But it does not ressemble Creole because French is different to Creole. --User:Luxihans 4:26, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
You can go to incubator:Wp/mfe/Main Page and start contributing in Mauritian Creole right now. πr2 (t • c) 16:31, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Means if we have many Mauritian articles in the incubator:Wp/mfe/Main Page, Mauritian Creole Wikipedia can be created? --User:Luxihans 4:36, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Yes. --MF-W 16:39, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Basically, yes. You can create an article about Mauritius here, for example: incubator:Wp/mfe/Moris. You also need to start to translate the interface on TranslateWiki.net. It would have a higher chance of passing if you can find other speakers of Mauritian Creole, like the people who commented on the other Mauritian request. πr2 (t • c) 16:40, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help but can you explain what means "If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval." in the page Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Mauritian Creole. I need your help. Reply me soon. --User:Luxihans 4:50, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
The committee is the Language committee. MF-W (MF-Warburg) above is a member, so he is aware of this request. For now, just focus on writing content. πr2 (t • c) 16:52, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
