Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Magahi

submitted verification final decision
Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).

The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved.

  • Check that the project does not already exist (see list).
  • Obtain an ISO 639 code
  • Ensure the requested language is sufficiently unique that it could not exist on a more general wiki.
  • Ensure that there are a sufficient number of native editors of that language to merit an edition in that language.
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Proposal edit

Magahi, an Indo-Aryan language spoken in India, is spoken in cities like Patna. It is spoken in 9 districts of Bihar and 8 districts of Jharkhand and also in Malda in West Bengal. There are around 20,700,000 speakers of Magahi, including speakers of Khortha which is considered a dialect of Magahi. It is also known as Magahi which is directly derived from the name "Magadhi". It is also common in Magadh to refer to the region as Magah. Magahi derived from the ancient Magadhi Prakrit, which was created in the ancient kingdom of Magadha, the core of which was the area south of the Ganges and east of Son River. It is believed to be the language spoken by Gautama Buddha to deliver sermons. It was the official language of the Mauryan court and Gupta Empire, in which the edicts of Ashoka were composed. People in the Magahi speaking area use this language in daily communications. This language is official in the state of Jharkhand in India. This language is also threatened by Hindi, which is the state language of Bihar and Jharkhand and also there is a tendency of urban language shift among Magahi speakers. Wikipedia must protect Magahi by providing here a space for increasing it's valuable content of knowledge.--Indscience (talk) 14:58, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion edit

Arguments in favour edit

  • Support: Magahi being one the three major languages of Bihar with over 2 crore native speakers and official status in the state of Jharkhand, strongly deserves its own edition of Wikipedia. I hope more native speakers of Magahi will support this and contribute in Magahi Wikipedia. --ऐक्टिवेटेड् (talk) 10:30, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
