Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Kotava

main page Request for a new language edition: Wikipedia Kotava
submitted verification final decision
Applications-system.svg This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval, will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert and notify the Board of Trustees for a possible veto.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

A committee member provided the following comment:

Please see my comment under Discussion below. For LangCom: StevenJ81 (talk) 15:59, 25 January 2019 (UTC)
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Language code avk (SILEthnologue) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Kotava Language name in English
Language name Kotava Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...

I think that we would need a Kotava language Wikipedia. -- 03:06, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

Support : Kotava exists since 1978. Its community is small, not proselytizing but nevertheless active. This project is already progressing well in the incubator and I am sure it will remain active and of good quality if it will be officially open. Amongst the constructed languages, except Esperanto, Kotava is certainly the one with the strongest literary development, with many translations and original texts. Among other fields that will be strong on the encyclopedia, there is Africa (look for example the "portal" about Tanzania), prehistory, history more generally, the Russian world widely, the geography and some other themes. On the other hand, for the moment at least, the scientific fields (medicine, mathematics, chemistry, etc.) are weak points.

Languages die every day, unfortunately. Others, very rare, are born and need space and benevolence to grow and to blossom. Wikipedia must fit into this free way of life. Thank you. --Axel xadolik (talk) 07:23, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

I'm going to put this on hold for a time. There is a fairly high bar to have a conlang marked as eligible. So I'd like to give this test community a little time to solidify before I start discussing this request with LangCom. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:59, 25 January 2019 (UTC)
@StevenJ81: It's been one year since you quarantined this project. 7,000 articles have been written. What's missing? Who gives the imprimatur? At whose feet must we bow? Who is the hidden god of your so-called committee? Please answer, thanks. Biscuit 26507 (talk) 18:45, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
It is not 'so-called'. Without the Language Committee your project can't be approved and it's not nice idea to force anybody to approve the project. Give them time - as an ex-editor of Wikimedia Incubator I can say it may require from several months up to 3-4 years. 7000 or no matter how much articles don't really matter, I remember approved projects with a couple of hundreds of acticles, and a project with ~15000 articles. --Wolverène (talk) 09:47, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

Strong support. I contribute to this project in the incubator which is very active and diverse. There are already more than 2500 articles. What is the bar required to be validated? What time is needful, a year, ten years, the engulfment of Amsterdam under the water? Biscuit 26507 (talk) 09:18, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

5300 articles and still nothing! What's the problem? Biscuit 26507 (talk) 15:58, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Support : Having made 3400 edits in this project since 2017, I hope it will be quickly admitted. Nevatovol (talk) 07:17, 3 July 2019 (UTC)

Support : The speakers of Kotava are widely scattered throughout the world and this project is a wonderful way to federate them intelligently and to share their knowledge and culture. Seramikya (talk) 09:47, 10 July 2019 (UTC)

Strong oppose It is not popular conlague with very small community. --Fenikals (talk) 15:38, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

(eo) Saluton Fenikals.
Amike.

(avk) Va Fenikals kiavá.

Support: I just saw this proposition. Kotava is not a "big" language and will probably never be, but it's one of the actually original IALs that have the most dedicated community of speakers. I'm sure that they could keep a Wikipedia living and growing --Theomanou (talk) 14:37, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

Support: This project is a good idea, and the comunity is active. Damdarak (talk) 15:44, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

  Support: Well.
Va Kotava num kotavaf siatos ke Wikipedia en bristupú. Kotavusik (talk) 19:26, 9 September 2019 (UTC)

Support: For approval. Recaredo (talk) 13:21, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

Abdumimaks zo govanovar !! Gabriel Antiange (talk) 11:34, 22 December 2019 (UTC)

This project has been around for more than one year with daily contributions by more than three Wikipedians. It has more than 6,000 articles. I would like to ask when is it going to be approved. --Chabi (talk) 08:14, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Support: For two years a great work has been done. So the approval is logical. Zveri ke Abitibi (talk) 20:11, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

Support: There is an active community contributing to the Wikipedia in Incubator. Jonashtand (talk) 18:38, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Strong support: There are many users contributing to the Kotava Wikipedia every month, and this testwiki has a community really dedicated on it. Additionally, there are more than 3 contributors with more than 10 edits for one and half year in this test Wikipedia. Furthermore more than 9,000 articles have been created. However, many articles need expansion. Personally, I strongly support the approval of Kotava Wikipedia. NikosLikomitros (talk) 23:17, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

Why this Wikipedia hasn't been approved yet? More than 9,000 articles, more than three contributors doing articles every day for more than one year and it hasn't been approved, why is this? --Chabi (talk) 15:54, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

Strong support. A main work, enormous activity for two years. An active and large community. A great project. Цареник Костович (talk) 15:52, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

Strong support. A very nice project, active and regularly developed. It fully deserves its place in Wikipedia. Kotava does not have the importance of Esperanto as a constructed language, but its community is active and dynamic. Herakles2000 (talk) 14:16, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

Strong support. It has an active community, far more active than Novial's community has ever been, and this community has demonstrated its willingness to contribute fervently and actively to Wikipedia on a level that many constructed language communities have never shown. Even if all the ghost wikis for languages like Novial and Interlingue and Volapük were closed tomorrow, I would still support Kotava, as its community has demonstrated a willingness to actively contribute on a level that makes it worth giving sanction. פֿינצטערניש (talk) 09:10, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
