Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Jutish

submitted verification final decision
Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).

The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved.

  • Check that the project does not already exist (see list).
  • Obtain an ISO 639 code
  • Ensure the requested language is sufficiently unique that it could not exist on a more general wiki.
  • Ensure that there are a sufficient number of native editors of that language to merit an edition in that language.
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code jut (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Jutish Language name in English
Language name Jysk Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q1340322 - item has currently the following values: Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name Wikipædi "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace Wikipædi usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace Wikipædi-diskusjon "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Europe/Copenhagen "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings 1. We need a logo with description "WikipædI / Den fri encyklopædi" (>>> File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-jut.png). 2. We decided not to use the namespace of Help; it's pretty enough to have the 'Wikipedia:' namespace, unless 'Help:' will be more helpful in some future. Anything else that should be set
submit Phabricator task. It will include everything automatically, except additional namespaces/settings. After creating the task, add a link to the comment.

Proposal edit

Hello community. I propose you to open the new Wikipedia project, written in Jutlandic (Jutish) dialect of the Danish language. It is spoken mostly in Denmark, on the Danish-German border. Although the number of native speakers is unknown (in some sources I saw a number of 100,000 but I didn't remember where), Jutish seems to be a live language/dialect. The wiki is not very active enough just for today, but note that Jutish has a valid language code (ISO 639-3: jut) and almost all (except the only one!) most-used documentation messages have been translated. That's a good start to get a separate wiki in a future.

Look also here to learn more about Jutish. Thanks. --Ghiutun 05:04, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Arguments in favour edit

  1. As a proposer. --Ghiutun 05:04, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  2. As a contributor. --Cahnn (talk) 13:16, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them." (c) --Ghiutun 12:10, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Support. Jutish dialect has own ISO code and it is differs from Standard Danish. So, Jutish speakers may have own Wikipedia. --Danvintius Bookix (talk) 18:18, 17 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    @Danvintius Bookix Where are the speakers? Ehh. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:17, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In Denmark. See article. --Danvintius Bookix (talk) 17:59, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Then why SIL said something against it? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 02:54, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know why SIL is claiming it historical, but here's speech samples (dated 1960s-80s I guess). --Wolverène (talk) 09:08, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So if Wolverène's link is true, Danvintius, I'm afraid that the Wikipedia article is written in wrong way, it wrongly claimed Jutish is still having speakers living, which isn't true anymore.

But an opposite "knowledge way": If Wolverène provided a famous wrong link (aka a propaganda website, like RT/Sputnik... from Russia), then I would encourage Danvintius to continue providing evidences that this dialect is still having the living, by ethnic, Jut's peoples that are speaking it, and like the thing Thao speakers did, request at SIL to change the language type.

(I also gave my concerns via w:Talk:Jutlandic dialect#Still living? Or already extinct?). Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 13:32, 28 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It's a local site and I took the link from a corresponded WP article. --Wolverène (talk) 08:41, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have information that South Jutish is still living. For example, here. It is definitely endangered. --Danvintius Bookix (talk) 14:00, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Danvintius Bookix Well, in this case you'll indeed need to submit a change request, or otherwise SIL may still lie in this topic. (PS: for the record, there was a request intended to "retire" jut, but rejected: [1]). Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:02, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Arguments against edit

w:Jutlandic dialect seems to refer to jut as a modern language.--Prosfilaes (talk) 04:15, 22 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Then it's a SIL issue, as SIL's Language Type of Jutish is Historical, and the test projects in jut are therefore blocked from editing for all users. Probably they need to do something like what Thao speakers did, but in fact, that's a separated topic. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 09:32, 22 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Other discussion edit

To clarify for a future: as I understand the wiki will be written in several dialects, not just in an only one. --Ghiutun 12:34, 27 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There is a very clear difference between Nordjysk (Northern Juttish) and Sønderjysk (Southern Juttish). Both will hardly understand what the otherone is saying. The northern Jutlanders are more scandinavian in sted of the southern ones who have many German words and grammar. I forsee a problem in this as it will lead to conflicts. Rodejong (talk) 21:04, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There are vital WPs covering different dialects, see e.g. North Frisian or Alemannic --Murma174 (talk) 11:20, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
