submitted verification final decision

This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

A committee member provided the following comment:

Test has been fairly dormant lately, but there is enough content that it can be considered eligible. We'd encourage anyone fluent in this language to help contribute to the test. StevenJ81 (talk) 22:59, 4 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code ppl (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Pipil Language name in English
Language name Nawat Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q1186896 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality no indication Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name "Wikinews" in your language
Project namespace usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace "Wikinews talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone America/El_Salvador "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Proposal

edit

A small but lively and steadily growing on-line language-recovery community is already established for this highly endangered language. This community, which includes some native speakers and many language learners and enthusiasts, largely functions through a cluster of facebook groups (e.g. https://www.facebook.com/groups/33974937500 or https://www.facebook.com/groups/471000739633683/), websites (see http://alanrking.info/nawat.php and http://nebibliaj.org/) and the Nawat Wikipedia in the incubator (http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/ppl/Achtu_Iswat). While the rhythm of activity in the wikipedia might be considered very slow, this is in accord with our present resources and the project is nonetheless alive; efforts are made to build it slowly but coherently and we encourage people in our community to read it; furthermore, production is an excellent way to cultivate and motivate the language skills of both editors and readers. The present proposal is to expand this resource in scope through the creation of a Wikinews sister project, which is expected to serve a similar function but allow editors to develop current-affairs or journalistic-type content in addition to the current encyclopaedic material. Time will tell how much uptake this gets, as with any new project, but at this point it seems worth trying. The Nawat wikipedia project (in incubator) is several years old and has not "died" but continues to be used and maintained. The idea of exchanging news in Nawat (sometimes) is also not completely new as this has happened already to a limited extent on the aforementioned FB groups, in a sporadic way. The existence of the Nawat Wikinews project as a natural extension of that may serve to stimulate more intense and frequent writing, reading and communication leading in turn to further use of these Wikiprojects, creating a circular feedback loop that favours Nawat language recovery, our ultimate goal. Initially we might consider this initiative to be experimental but it seems like it's worth a try. I hope the Wikimedia community can support this!

  1. Strong support, I just see a great work on Incubator now. --Tamara Ustinova (talk) 18:36, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Um, a well developed non-Wikipedia test project in the problemic Nahuatl series languages. Not sure if waiting how many years to see its creation, or maybe just reject? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 11:55, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

On closing, I'll note that this isn't getting created any time soon, so I wouldn't worry too much. StevenJ81 (talk) 23:02, 4 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
