Notes edit

What happend?: I am an ordinary user on the Japanese Wikipedia and Tomos is one of bureaucrats there. In my opinion he has recently threatened with banning, with wording "I leave you unbanned but you are worthy to be [banned]". In my opinion his assertion didn't follow the rule and even if so, it would be better to ban me than have a condescending attitude toward an user. I complained to him and requested for his apology by mail. He wrote me suggesting I publish my mail somewhere, so he could reply to me. That's the reason I created this page. --Aphaia 03:45, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Why this discussion is on Meta?

I received email from Aphaia indicating that she would not feel secure having a discussion on Japanese Wikipedia. She also indicated that she might bring the issue to Wikipedia-l or somewhere because I am an admin on multiple wikis, and this issue has implications to multiple projects.

I suggested that Wikipedia-l might not be an appropriate place, and using Meta Wikimedia would be better. Aphaia created this page as a result.

I wrote via email, in part,:

If you feel uncomfortable having a talk on Japanese Wikipedia, how about using Meta Wikimedia? I don't think Wikipedia-l is an appropriate place for this, but given that you have your own ideas why it is a good choice, I would not oppose strongly.
Before I reply to your email, I would like you to publish your email first to somewhere.

Remark: "flame-up" is a typo of frame-up.

My argument consists on three major points:

  1. (Though his wording are soft in style), the statement implied "I can ban you but let you be free". It was arbitrary and condescending. It is innapropriate as a sysop/bureaucrat of Wikimedia project.
  2. He asserted the opposite side was not a vandal clearly. I could pointed out the reasons for oppositions during observation of the user's behaviour when Tomos had been almost absent. Such a controversial thing should not be easily asserted, nor served as a basis with which a bureaucrat critisizes a user, specially implying the possibility to ban the latter. It could be an abusive usage of sysopship, and enough threaten an ordinary user.
  3. He implied or described me as a person who lost calmness and brought a poisonous atmosphere into the community. I protest such a label and claim he dealt with me unfairly. It was the last part of his first message on my talk, and he said this only for me. To the opposite party he didn't say so and applause his or her contributions. It was partial in my view and suspicious that he intended to make a frame-up for me. I request him for apology on his wording.

Tomos edit

Tomos' responce to the three points:

  1. I referred to blocking policy because I received an anonymous report about reversions. I needed to make some decision wheather or not the users should be blocked. I was also paying attention to the connotation of the anonymous report that it was unfair that you two were not blocked. After looking at the relevant pages, I thought blocking was uneccesary, but I saw some reversions. So placing notes to user talk pages would be a good thing to do, I thoght.
  2. I admit that I was not aware of the possibility that the other user involved in the incident could be regarded as a clear vandal. I did say he was "clearly not" a vandal. That was a hasty judgment on my part. The judgment carries some weight on this case because the block policy related to the 3-reversion says that 3 reversion against a clear vandal is okay. I still think that he is not a "clear vandal" but I should have said "he is not a clear vandal" instead of "he is clearly not a vandal."
  3. The 3-reversion rule clearly states that reverting others' edits are bad because it spoils the atomosphere and heat up the parties involved. Please compare the language of the policy and what I wrote on your talk pages. Given these, and the general principles about the blocking policy that it should be used with caution and flexibly, I thought that no blocking was needed. I thought so because you guys have already started discussion, and stopping it would not help much of anything. I explained what our policy said, that I did not think there is a need for a block, and asked each of you to understand why we have that policy. (These were done on your and the other user's talk pages)

Tomos' opinions:

  1. I think I made two mistakes in this. 1) I did not think that you would argue that the other guy is a clear vandal and I should have blocked him. 2) I did not think you would argue that you made only 2 reversions because you made a meaningful edit between the first and the next two reverts, and that the other user made three because his edits are rather meaningless. After hearing your arguments, I now think that it is possible to make that argument, and I apologize that I did not see those possibilities. Well, I have already apologized before, I thought, but I am clarifying that those are mistakes in my judgments and wording.
  2. I was relatively sure that I did not need to block either of you. I still think so. This seems something we cannot agree on.
  3. It seems you do not think I made a good-faith effort. That is sad. I hope that will change..

Other notes:

  1. I have learned only partially what was goning on on the IRC at that time, learning more might change my opinion.

Tomos

Aphaea edit

In part A, the parenthesis ( ) is used for the purpose which didn't show apparently on the texts above by Aphaea.

Comparison of Argument Aphaeae on mail and Tomos' responce
  1. Tomos' attitude: Aphaea thinks the attitude shown on Tomos' first comment on her talk as arbitrary and condescending (and subsequently refers on his 'apology' on her talk on ja which was not translated here); She took his wording condescending and threatning and shows an afraid he tried deminishing this issue to mere her impression. Tomos shows his opinion that it would be a good thing to refer both reversions and possibility of blocking (supposingly soothing the "audience" and make both parties aware their circumstances). But he ingores the complaient Aphaeae. As for arbitrarity he states it was no case the rule should be applied regidly, but for condescence he replies nothing. As for his apoligy see also B:3 and Tomos' opinion #3.
  2. Evaluation of the user of the opposite side as a basis of judgement: Aphaea thinks that her reverting could be justified (for avoiding POV vandalism) and that it was controvercial if her reverting were counted as three formally. And she concludes such sysop's attitude can threaten users. From thas view Tomos applied her 3RR inaapropriately. Tomos admits his judgement was haste, this case was not so clear as he had described but controvercial. As for the problem of threatening attutude of sysops was left uncommented. See also B:1 and his opinion #1.
  3. Inpartiality toward users: Aphaea points out Tomos was inpartial on his comments (when he ask both sides to respect the policy, he said only to her "Be calm and don't bring the bad atomosphere". He repeated that wording twice, the first in his first comment, the second as the end of his 'apology' on her talk - in my humble opinion such wording is only suitable for trolls). Tomos ignore this argument, and describes his deed as based on good-will.
Supplemental information: The discussion mentioned by Tomos as just starting has already done from the view of Aphaia, although around the article focused it occured very recently: dispute with this user concerned was continual since last September when Tomos was inactive on wiki. Under threat of blocking Aphaia unwillingly restarted it, but the result was infertile as same as her expection: some users opposed the edits of the user concerned and no one suported but s/he claimed it should be so and was sticked on POV, academically innacurate and therefore unencyclopediac expressions.
B
Comments Aphaeae on Tomos' opinions
  1. Tomos' attitude: It is a pleasure that we find points of view we can share, if they are now partially: those were mistakes in your judgments and wording. Your treatment toward me was therefore not totally fair and nice, if you would have a good-will. In my humble opinion you should have written us you thought we were so-and-so (I include here the opposite side too). I appliciate your withdrawal of former judgements and accept your apoligy willingly.
I'm however afaid we agree not on not every parts, but limited, as for wording in particular. Also it is disappointed you ignored my central point of argument your wording in this curcumstance sounded very condescending both in general as sysop/bureaucrat's words, and in particular in the case the judgement was based on controversial standpoints. The latter is beyond the mistakes around judgements in my opinion.
  2. Should or may: You misread my argument on some parts. I didn't say the user should have block, but s/he was filled the qualification 3RR was applied. In my opinion there are only may not and may but must around using sysop previliges. I don't think therefore he should be blocked, though I think he could be applied 3RR. When he did his third revert, I asked a help to folks on #ja.wikipedia, because now it was apparently an edit war and it would be better others would involved. From my point of view I expected another editor would revert it to avoid POV, but I didn't intentionally mentioned s/he could be applied 3RR, because there were sysops (If I weren't involved I would have mentioned the possibility for applying ). Shortly I don't think the user should be banned, if we can avoid blocking and banning, it is always nice. When I was asking someone's help, I slightly expected the third party editing would help the user to be aware his edit was not approved by others, though I am now very desperate on this point. Back to the topic, if you use your previleges arbitrarily and threaten users with them, it would be much better to apply rules to them mechanically in my opinion.
  3. Inpartiality again: You avoid answering my request for explanation why you asked only me not to bring the bad atmosphere (I pointed out here you disgrace me using the verb applying usually vandals and trolls in your expression. And you applied this word only to me. In my sense it is inpartial and inapproriate to make comments in such a way) and be calm as if I would have a hot head. Without explanation of this disgracing it is hard for me to trust your good-faith, regretfully.

Miya edit

Miya 16:33, 20 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Tomos edit

Thank you Aphaia and Miya for your comments. To Aphaia, I am also glad to find that we have at least some agreements, and that you accept my apologies. I appreciate that.

I did not adress some of your concerns because 1) I thought focusing on basic points first would make the dialogue easier to proceed, and 2) I was wondering if you would somehow change the perception and see my actions make sense as a good-faith effort. If so, discussing those points might be unecessary. But perhaps I was wrong. And I did not mean to avoid discussion.

Tomos' response to Aphaia's comments:

1. re: Tomos' attitude: So the major remaining point here is if I were emphasizing you to be calm and not disturb the atmosphere more strongly than to the other user. My answer is somewhat yes, but not very much.

This is about the difference in this and this messages I placed to your and the other users' talk (translations below). The two major things that I had in my mind about you were:

  • that you must have known the 3 revert rule, and there was no point of reminding of you of the rule.
  • your version of the page looked better, so I was wondering why you were not asking other people's support in dealing with the issue. I was thinking like "If you get other people's attention, they are likely to support your version. Why revert, then?"

The major possibility I could find was that you got angry and that was why you reverted. And I was thinking perhaps you forgot the details of the 3 revert rule like the rule's intent was to calm down the involved parties and prevent creating rough atmosphere. Our policy clearly says that two reverts are not okay, either. Perhaps you forgot that. I was not sure, but those were the things you possibly were forgetting, I thought. So I remind you of those.

On the other hand, I was not sure if the other user even knew the rule in the first place. So I gave him a link to the blocking policy document, and explained why 3 reverts are undesirable. As you can see, I explained to that user losing temper and creating rough atmosphere were undesirable. To me, my explanations were basically the same. But I was expecting that you did not need to revert the other user's edit, and therefore I was worrying that losing temper was the reason why you reverted. Is that reflected in my messages? Yes, but not that much, I think.

Here are the messages translated by me
(To Aphaia's talk:) Hello. I was notified by another person and took a look at relevant pages. It seems that the talk is going on to improve the situation, so I would avoid placing a block, but 3 revert is against our block policy regardress of if dialogue is attempted on a talk page or elsewhere. I strongly hope you understand the meaning of the policy and have a talk calmly. I was also wondering why you were so quick to revert the other user's edit.
Please note that reverting up to two times is okay, and it is clear that the other user is not a vandal, so I feel sad about the series of actions you took this time. Please edit pages without losing temper or create the rough atmosphere.
I beg your understanding. (sig and timestamp)
(To the other user's talk:) Hello. I was notified by another person and took a look at the article and relevant pages. It seems that the talk is going on to improve the situation, so I would avoid placing a block, but reverting each others' edits is specifically designated as against our block policy.
This policy applies to 3 or more reverts regardless of if dialogue is attempted on a talk page or elsewhere, in order to keep calmness of the involved and prevent spoiling the atmosphere.
I strongly hope that you would understand the meaning of the rule and come to a dialogue calmly.
Please note that reverting up to two times is okay, and it is clear that Aphaia is not a vandal, so I feel sad about the series of actions you took this time. I beg you to please have a constructive dialogue. (sig and timestamp)

2. re: Must or may: I reviewed our communication and found where I got the idea. Here, you told me that I committed negligence as an administrator. So I took that you meant I did not perform some duty as an administrator regarding this case, like blocking the other user. But did you mean something different? I have to say I cannot fully understand your explanation above about what happened on IRC, why you did not inform sysop(s) on the channel about the 3 revert of the vandal (as you perceived) is not clear to me..

3. re: Inpartiality again: The question, as I understand, initially was if I wanted you to label you as short tempered or creating rough atmosphere. You were suspecting if I were scapegoating you to resolve the situation. My answer is no. It was not a labeling. This time, you seem to be asking if I were thinking (rather than labeling) that you were angry and creating rough atmosphere. My answer is somewhat yes. I was worring that you were angry and that was why you reverted, as opposed to getting other people's help. And I was even more worried when you replied to my message because you looked angry and argued that your made only two reverts. And that resulted in my reply again emphasizing the rule's intent. The other user, on the other hand, replied rather simply agreeing what I asked. So I did not have any reason to ask him to calm down again. But what I intended was nothing like labeling or scapegoating.

Additional thought:

  1. You pointed out that you thought the dialogue was over by the time I placed the first massage to your talk page. I was thinking it was still going. This might be a factor in our different perceptions of other things.
    • If you were thinking that things were over, my comment would look like kind of inappropriate and arrogant. If I were in your position, I might have felt "why this guy comes to me at this point and gives me such a irrelevant/untimely message? Is this a warning for the future action?" I would feel that there would not be much point of asking me to calm down and remember the rules except for threatening... I am not sure if this interpretation is close to what happened, but it just came to my mind. (I have to tell you that I was quite surprised that you took my message as a threat...)
    • If that is the case, the question is would my message make sense to you as a good-faith effort to promote constructive dialogue if you consider that I was thinking the dialogue was not over?

Aphaia edit

Thank you Miya and Tomos for your comments. I appliciate you Miya to cast a softer light to things: I guess it would help both of us. And I'm glad there seems to be no question of mine unreplied by Tomos, and also that you agree on my summary on viewpoints we have shared.

Comment

It is plausible for you, Tomos, to have dealt with things on good faith and tried to behave fairly. Your action and wording would be however based on your prejudice or hasty judgement, not on a careful and proper analysis of situation, hence inapproriate. They sound or connotate threating and consedencing (as Miya commented) but not intentionally. I hope you will respect our impression on your wording and try to improve it; besides your intention, it is consedencing and irritating, and gave a pressure to users. Perhaps it helped them to restart discussions although, they wouldn't do willingly, but unwillingly under threat and fear. I dare say it would also corrupt atmosphere of the community.

I think other things are worthy to discuss and are meaningful in case we agree on this point. But for your help, yes, I was anger when I replied your first message, since I thought you threatened me unfairly and inappriately. And since you strongly urged me, not the other, to make a discussion after some months I have requested the person to do so and just after I decided to stop this infertile effort. I think you should have said so to the opposite side, not me, earlier if possible. It also reminded me on your another inappropriate proposal on Talk: Holy Spilit in which you have asked us to respect K.M.'s edits on the article Holy Spirit, though it was totally copivio, hence unacceptable. Those things would have reflect on my wording.

Aphaia 22:36, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Kk edit

Appliciation and remark Aphaeae
Thank you for your comment, Kk. I admit others could feel in a different way of us. It can vary by person and depend on occasion. But I'm afraid you missed my point. Acting a good faith is necessary to be nice, but not sufficient: people can treat others in an inappropriate and unfair way based on a good faith and misunderstanding. --Aphaia 22:36, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Tomos edit

Thank you Kk for your comments. I think you are right - this is created as a request for comment, so your input is appreciated here. At least that is my understanding.

Also, I am glad that you, Aphaia, now think that I presumably did act in good faith. Thank you for that.

1) How Aphaia, Miya, Kk felt about the message:

I am not very sure if I understand your opinions correct, so would you let me paraphrase them?

  • To Aphaia, the message sounds threatening and condescending. It is not just a matter of interpretation, but the message has that connotation. (But you also seem to agree with Kk saying that how it feels depends on person.)
  • To Miya, it doesn't sound threatening or condescending to Miya, but it is easy to see that it would sound threatening to Aphaia, who was a party to the case. If Miya was in Aphaia's shoes, Miya would feel that it is condescending. (My guess here is that for the person who receives the message, it would sound threatening, and for you personally, it would also sound condescending.)
  • To Kk: It doesn't sound so, but it could, to some people.

2) Why or in what sense it sounds threatening and condescending

As I understand, the part Miya pointed out "投稿ブロックをかけるのはやめておきますが" could sound threatening and condescending because basically it says "I avoid placing a block now, but..."

And it sounds like "... but you have to thank me for giving you the chance to continue to edit and behave well, or I will place a block." And if that is how you interpreted, it is a possible interpretation of what the message meant, and it sounds threatening and condescending, I think.

Also, Aphaia wrote above "I can ban you, but let you be free" was how she took my message, and that was arbitrary and condescending. If you took my message that way, or "I can ban you if I want, but I don't, so you owe me," that is very arbitrary and condescending, indeed.

But isn't that a reasonable interpretation of what I meant that "...but I am not sure how others will think about this." After all, I was thinking that the 3 reverts were made, and the block policy could be interpreted either way - apply block conservatively, like I did, or place a block because the dialogue is not an enough excuse.

In order to prevent misunderstanding, I could have said something like "とりあえず改善に向けた話し合いが行われているようですので投稿ブロックをかけるのは適当でないように僕は思いましたが" (I personally felt the block is inappropriate because a dialogue is going on to improve the situation). Is that the kind of thing Aphaia and Miya is thinking?

I am not sure if I understand what was exactly the "threat" (threat of being blocked based on my misunderstanding?), or the "condescense" ("I'm the boss, you can join us because I allow you to do that" kind of tone?)

Tomos 06:26, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Aphaea edit

Perhaps someone who reads it would feel unease or even irritated, though the message above is just a message for intimate friends (so it nor denotes nor connotes hostilility), then, here a question raises: either I'm talking in an appropriate way or those who are suspicious are simply wrong? Sure, it is a digression but still relevant in my opinion.
  • Denotation et connotation: In general, on interpretation of your wording if it would be so negative, Miya and I are not so far from each other in my opinion. I say it has a so-and-so connotation. I didn't say it denotes so-and-so. Then I mean "it could be taken so-and-so besides other reasonable possilibilies". And in my opinion we should attemp to keep our standard as high as possible, so if it is obvious a certain wording could have a negative and hostile connotation, we should try to avoid it. That is what I insisted (Please recall our discussion we talked about "moral standard" around sysopship). I also ask you please to remind yourself on my words above: I said you should not have said so to the both party, though the other party was a sort of vandal in my opinion. Shortly, I would like to say, "if your wording could sound threatning and conscedencing to a certain sort of folks, you are expected to avoid such". And I expected you were careful enough attempt to avoid such misunderstanding. But I am not sure now in this point.
    • On your recent wording, your interpretations the above seem to be reasonable. You succeeded somehow in retracing my impression. On my part I have taken your message as such what has connoted your second interpretation which you assumingly attributed to me, and has denoted your first one which you attributed to Miya. That what I felt at that moment.
    • Your proposed version seems to me much moderate, hence more appropriate, but I am not sure: again it depends on occasion and by person.
    • I feel a bit sad you seem to be filled up your own concerns and forget my other questions and request. Perhaps I am wrong. It was originally my proposal first we review your wording if it can sound conscedencing and if so, if you have a will to improve. But I think there are no distinct difference between us on this point except some your question how finely we can agree on, so I would like to go to the next topic for now. For me that is not only one major issue but one of them. Besides this part, it remains still your wording toward me on possiblity if I lost temper and angry. I admited I had been angry but in my opinion it doesn't mean you had behaved totally in a proper way, because it would be absurd to beat someone with your right hand and to attempt to soothe him with your left hand. In my humble opinion that was what you did, in particular in your second message on my talk. But perhaps you have a different thought somehow, need to have additional information. So here I only urge and request you to remember there are still remaining points on discussion.
      • But I also admit your misunderstanding of situation depended on innaproprite wording of mine on some parts: such as, I didn't leave a comment I gave up to continue my effort on discussion, put comments with ironic and/or straight tones and so on. I make an apology to put some reasons of misunderstanding or not to give sufficient information.
  • Lost temper?: I am sad if you still thought me lost totally myself and that was the reason I made revertion. In fact I begged a help but rejected. It was not right that you thought I haven't called for help, because indeed I have done. Talk page seemed to me useless, because the article concerned had only three or four inactive editors, and I wouldn't like to leave an obvious POV. Moreover, after a half and four month without a help, I didn't expect a new help to come. Perhaps reviewing what would happen after the protection, I was wrong, but anyway that was what I thought then. I was tired with an stubborn editor and it was influenced somehow my judgement. Anyway I decided to give it up and then you came to threaten me. It made me very upset, angry and sad. I felt as if I was betrayed, since then I'd thought you could have been trusted. So in my view I was tired and disappointed rather than angry and lost the temper at least during edits of the article. So you made a misjudge in this point too, in my opinion, and I hope you withdraw your inappropriate wording (as far as I consider).
  • Another mail publication: And at last, you seems to forget another my (newly addressed) request. I hope you also consider it the next time.

Tomos edit

Thank you again for your positive response. And if your apologies are addressed to me, they are accepted for sure.

  • re: Meaning of my message: My understanding now is that your criticism about my message is about one possible, reasonable interpretation of what my message means. That is, the message could be interpreted as threatening and condescending, especially to the parties involved. And you actually happened to interpret my message that way. I should have avoided giving you a message like that, you say. Is that correct? If so, I agree with that.
  • re: Anger: If I understand you correct, you became angry basically because of my message, not because of the event preceding it. Is that right? In other words, my message made you angry because you took it threatening and condescending, but you were not angry against the other user. But at that time, I did not understand it. So I took your reaction to my message as a further sign of your anger.. Additionally, I think that you thought the message was inappropriate because the message was asking to remember the three revert rule, while you were thinking that 1) the other user was a clear vandal, 2) you did not make three reverts, and 3) the other user made three reverts.
  • re: Another email: I think you wanted me to explain how we started using a page on meta. So I added a small note section and explained as I understood it. How does that look?

Responce: edit

I'm glad you accept my apologies, I appliciate that. I would like to make it sure it was addressed mainly to you but also to others, like Miya, who are involved and will be involved. I applicate you also for your mail publishing and clarification. It is almost fine for me. Sorry to refer a slight point though, in my impression "not feel secure" and its Japanese correspondence are a bit different and my feeling was near to the former. I hope this difference won't make another misunderstand in future.

  • re: Meaning of your message: I would like to use here the term connotation possibile rather than meaning for avoiding ambiguity, but you seem to understand what I meant and have felt. If so, we agree on this point too, and I appliciate your understanding.
  • re: Anger: You seem to guess right what I explained and also what I left not mentioned. But I'm not sure it is possible for me to say I was not anger at all during my revertings. If I had been totally indifferent, so I could have ignored those edits. So I don't withdraw my assertion you made me fury and that's why I was aggressive toward you, but I confess it is hard for me to describe how I had been anger before the series of those incident. And here I appliciate also your effort of understanding. I expect you now agree with that it was inapropriate to urge me to calm down, to remember the rules and to discuss with the other side, in particular, only me.
  • Again thank you, Tomos, for your note and mail exposition.

Miya edit

Miya 01:22, 23 Jan 2005 (UTC)

- Kk 09:23, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Abstract of first two paragraphs

Aphaia appreciates Kk and Miya for their comments. Miya supposed how Aphaia felt at these incidents; Aphaia agree on her guessing and remember what happened during last week, specially first three days...

Latter part (3-4 paragraphs)

Now I should apology, you Tomos, on my wording: I scanned recently the blocking policy on Japanese Wikipedia for the sake of another issue, and found my latest interpretation around 3RR invalid supposedly. I think someone could take the rule as well as I at that moment based on an instance, but I think such argument has a wrong basis logically, since the rule states the counter of reversions shouldn't be cancelled even if there are some other sorts of edits.

I opposed your first message, Tomos, as I hadn't made three reversions, and you agreed on me partly, and thus thought this part of your message innapropriate, twice. But it came from my wrong memory and you read the rule more properly. So Tomos, I apology you on my wrong assertion and accusation toward you.

An interim summary edit

I am very sorry that I could not come earlier.

Let me try, first, to write a summary of what happened, how each of us came to understand each other now. I thought this case deserves more thoughts and a clearer closure. (Tomos)

Prologos edit

This part was added by Aphaia, 18:58, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

  1. An edit war occured between two users. A user (let's call him User:A for now) added some sections and another user (let's call him User:B for now) opposed and deleted them. User:B made a major edit on the article concerned.
  2. User:B wrote his edit reasons as hidden comments closely. User:A reverted User:B's edits because it was better than User:B's and reader-friendly, but not consider B's claim to inapropriation. See further its history.
  3. Aphaia came late. She put a message on talk of each users to ask to have a discussion on talk, not only as hidden comments or as edit summaries. She put also her own opinion on talk: it was generally for the User:B's edit.
    1. User:B appliciated her attemp for mediation and apologize his edit war. He said he determined to cease his contribution to this field avoiding possible edit wars in the future.
    2. User:A left no comment on the talk of the article concerned, and made no compromise on editing, kept his own edits as the latest version and put a message toward User:B, a sort of "I welcome your coming edit!". User:B ignored this message gently.
  4. No other user made a comment during this issues, though they talked on it and showed a favor on other communities like irc, or a bulletine board.
  5. Aphaia thought User:A as a clear vandal because 1. he didn't join discussion 2. he showed no reasonable ground of his edit except his own impression 3. he discouraged a good editor and didn't realize what he did. And She felt sad on evasive attitude of the community too.
  6. The relevant discussions remain still today. This sequal of discussions can easily be followed from the talk of User:A.

Part I. (From reversions to the initial message) edit

A. What happened:

  1. Aphaia and another user (let's call him User:A for now) reverted each others edits. User:A is the same user in the Prologue part.
  2. Aphaia informed other people (including administrators) on IRC about the reversions, but did not tell that three reverts were made by User:A. A person said "Ha, User:A, again? He is hard to be dealt with, indeed." But she denied to make a reversion and said she would like to edit later. Other people denied to intervane the issues too. After a discussion, Aphaia decided to make a reversion by herself.
  3. Tomos received an anonymous notice about it elsewhere. The notice indicated that blocking might be neccessary.
  4. Tomos looked into what had happened.
  5. Tomos thought that 1) reversions were done three times from each side within 24 hours to each other's edit, 2) neither side was a "clear vandal" (if against clear vandal, reverting is okay, according to our policy), but 3) blocking was uneccessary for the following two reasons.
    1. First, Aphaia and User:A was having a talk, Tomos recognized, and blocking them would only disrupt the dialogue.
    2. Second, the blocking policy said that the policy should be applied carefully/ conservatively and the policy should be applied flexibly to individual cases.
  6. Tomos placed notes on Aphaia's and User:A's talk pages in order to ask them to keep having a dialogue.

(To the User:A's talk:) Hello.

For further clarification and understanding, would you let me put your original text, translation and my analysis of your discource? I think you put here what you would have liked to mean, but not what you factly wrote at the time: you added some words and change the order of each phrasing. In my opinion it is however relevant to topics what you wrote me and how I took it. So I suppose it would be better for us to take a look on the original text and what kind(s) of speech strategy we can find there. You wrote:
(Transl. by Aphaea)Hello. I was notified by another person and gave a look on relevant pages. Right now it seems discussion for improvement is on-going, so I put away the idea of placing a block [on you], however, regardless of attempt on talk or elsewere or not, three reversions is a case of [placing a] blocking. [That you] understand the meaning of that rule and calmly have a talk, [I] strongly hope.
(Transl. by Aphaea)In addition, it doesn't mean up to two reversions are ok, and it is clear that User:A is no sort of vandals, so I feel very regretfully on [your] sequel of actions in this case. Please don't lose your temper nor make a vandalistic (or rough) atmosphere, and edit pages, please.
(Transl. by Aphaea)I appliciate you in advance.
I underlined some clear distinctions between our translations. I tried to represent the original sequence of words as possible as I can, since order of words and phrases are crucial parts to determine the speech strategy and discource analysis, in particular on first impression. And you seems to add or omit some words on your translation. Now I attempt only to translate.
If it is for you enough realize where differences of our perceptions have come, so we will be able to save further analysis. I made some additions to other parts. You could find them easiler by color. --Aphaia | WQ2翻訳中 | talk 17:40, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)
  7. At this point, Tomos was misunderstanding two possibilities, one about the situation, the other about the blocking policy.
    1. Regarding the situation, Tomos thought that neither side was a clear vandal, and did not recognize the possibility that Aphaia was thinking User:A as a clear vandal. Tomos now understands the possibility.
    2. Regarding the blocking policy, Tomos thought that 1) making even two reverts was discouraged, and 2) reverting each other's edits while having talk was not okay (both written in the policy), because 3) reversion tended to spoil the atomosphere, and heat up the people involved. Tomos did not recognize the possibility that three reversion could be justified when there was a legitimate edit in between reversions. Tomos now understands the possibility.
  8. After receiving the message from Tomos, Aphaia -
    1. thought that Tomos was wrong in thinking that User:A cannot be considered a clear vandal, though Tomos' message said that User:A was clearly not a vandal.
    2. thought Tomos was wrong in thinking that Aphaia made "three reverts," because the rule could be interpreted to mean that reverting others' edits while making legitimate edits were okay.
    3. thought Tomos was wrong in thinking that Aphaia didn't understand the meaning of blocking policy, and took it a disrespect.
    4. felt that she was threatened by Tomos. Tomos wrote that he avoided placing a block for now, but it implied he would block them if he wanted.
    5. felt that Tomos' attitude was condescending. Tomos wrote as if Tomos was allowing Aphaia to continue to edit.
    6. felt that Tomos was treating her inappropriately because she was simply dealing with a vandal, but Tomos told her to have a dialogue with that vandal, Tomos told her to stay calm.
    7. felt that he took the vandal as a good contributer and herself as a vandal or troll and very embarassed, since he described her "losing temper and ... vandalistic".
    8. felt that Tomos was inappropriately forced her to have a dialogue with that vandal with a threat without paying a notice to her past effort (see Prologue) or just devaluating it.
    9. felt angry that Tomos was threatening her and showing condescending attitude and that he ignored her past effort to have a dialogue with that vandal, though he gave no help during those months.
    10. felt as if Tomos forced her alone to deal with the vandal, and forced her to admit that user were a good contributor, though Tomos himself avoided the trouble and gave only conscendecing wording but no actual help, and felt in solitude and despair.

B. What we discussed about these.

Regarding this part, our talk on this page (and talk before that) resulted in the following:

  1. Tomos now thinks that
    1. Tomos failed to recognize that User:A could be regarded as a "clear vandal," although he wrote that User:A was clearly not a vandal.
    2. Tomos failed to recognize that the blocking policy could be interpreted to allow people making three or more reverts if a legitimate edit was in between reversions.
    3. Both failures about possible interpretation of the situation and the policy were a product of a hasty judgment and action.
  2. Tomos apologizes on both failures.
  3. Aphaia accepts the apologies.
  4. Aphaia now changed the perception that Tomos' initial interpretation was more reasonable given the wording of the policy.
  5. Aphaia apologizes accusing Tomos of making inproper interpreation of the policy.
  6. Tomos (hereby) accepts the apology thankfully.

  1. Aphaia now thinks that
    1. it is plausiblepossible that Tomos did not intend to threaten Aphaia by his message. ###When he said he would avoid placing a block now, he did not mean to block Aphaia if she fails to behave well. He meant he was not sure if other administrators would think the blocking is unneccessary.
    2. it is plausiblepossible that Tomos was not having a condescending attitude.
      1. When he said he would avoid placing a block now, he did not mean to indicate Tomos allowed Aphaia to keep editing.
  2. Combined, Aphaia thinks that it is plausible that Tomos made a good-faith effort in placing that message, although the message could be interpreted as threatening and condescending.
  3. Tomos is grateful of Aphaia's understanding.
  4. Tomos also agrees with Aphaia that, when possible, using clearer message is better, and now understands that his message could be interpreted as threatening and condescending.

Part II. (After the initial message) edit

A. What happened

  1. (Aphaia's initial objections) Aphaia, after receiving the initial message from Tomos, objected him. Her initial objections included the following:
    1. The three-reversion rule does not apply to this case because there is a legitimate edit in between reverts.
    2. It was also pointed out that Tomos' initial message was offensive in that it was based on misunderstanding of the situation - Tomos suggested there were three reverts where there were only two reverts.
  2. (User:A's reply) User:A replied to Tomos, too. User:A pointed out that his edits were not typical reverts because he kept chaning back only certain parts, letting other parts edited by others intact. (This is a similar point to Aphaia's first objection).
  3. (Tomos' reply) Tomos replied to Aphaia and User:A. He apologized about the possibility that their edits could be regarded as something other than three reverts, but repeated the point that the meaning of the three-revert rule - it was to keep the involved party calm, and prevent the atmosphere from being spoiled. To User:A, Tomos suggested to use talk page to form consensus, and not reverting-back other's revert, among other things. To Aphaia, he made a note that he hoped
  4. Eventually Aphaia read Tomos' message to User:A. First she thought it was a same message. But later Aphaia recognized the line at the end part where Tomos had refered losing temper and bad (vandalistic) atmosphere on her talk had been given only to her. She was embarassed, felt disgraced and anger. She took this differences as a sign of partiality of Tomos.
  5. (Aphaia's second objections) Aphaia made further objections.
    1. The three-reversion rule does not apply to her because, in her opinion, User:A was a clear vandal.
    2. User:A made three reverts.
    3. Tomos committed negligence as an administrator, and made a threat to Aphaia.
  6. User:A replied to Tomos, too. It was a short thank-you note.
  7. Tomos replied to Aphaia, mainly showing what he did and did not understand from Aphaia's message, and asking questions for clarifications.
  8. (Aphaia's third objections) Aphaia later expressed further objections.
    1. Tomos' message was condescending.
    2. Tomos was partial in talking with the two users. There was a possibility that Tomos was trying to scapegoat Aphaia to resolve the conflict.

B. What we discussed about these

  1. Issues of application of the blocking policy to this case, interpretation of the blocking policy, threat, condescence, scapegoating are probably resolved. Apologies, acceptance thereof, expressions of understanding, and appreciations were made as described above.
    1. Aphaia thinks the issue around condescence and threat not presant and practical no longer, but that it still remains not totally resolved. See below.

Partiality is the remaining issue, Aphaia points out. On this point, our discussion so far clarified that

  1. Tomos now recognizes that he made requests for Aphaia to edit calm and not spoil the atmosphere. I made the request twice to Aphaia, whereas only once to User:A.
  2. Tomos admits that he was more worried about Aphaia. It was because Aphaia's edit clearly looked better, and she could simply draw others' attention to solve the issue without reverting User:A's edits. In addition, Tomos was confident that Aphaia was aware of the three-revert rule. So the reasons Tomos could imagine for Aphaia's reversions were that she was angry about User:A, and/or that she did not know the details of the rule.
  3. Tomos got even more worried after receiving initial objections from Aphaia. User:A was rather quick to agree with Tomos' message, whereas Aphaia seemed offened by Tomos' message.
  4. Tomos misunderstood that Aphaia was angry mainly about User:A. But Tomos now understands that Aphaia was angry mainly about Tomos after receiving the initial message from him.
  5. Aphaia explains that she was angry about User:A when she reverted User:A's edits. But it does not justify Tomos' partial remarks.
  6. Tomos thinks that, although he was worried if Aphaia was angry, his messages were not that partial.

As for condescence and threat, Tomos admits his wording had flaws to be taken in such a way, and that, when possible, it would be better to choose another expression. In her objections Aphaia critisized those points and request no apology and on Tomos' part he gave her none in a clear form.

A question arises here: though Tomos made no apology on this point as a clear statement, at least Aphaia thinks so, he did it substantially or he admits his mistake and that's all. More closely,
  1. Tomos apologized once for his mistakes on his wording on other issues. It means he is prepared to apologize for his fault, if he can notice what it is. His acknowledgement of mistakes could be therefore interpreted as his substantial apology or
  2. Tomos admits the inappropriations within his wording though, he admits no necessity for apology on this amtter for some reasons or
  3. Other cases
That is although not a core issue, but it would be helpful to clarify it, specially we consder how this dispute has been or was resolved. (Aphaia)

Part I (差し戻しから当初の書き込みまで) edit

A. 経緯:

  4. Tomos

    こんにちは。他の方から連絡を頂いて菅原道真と、関連するページを見てみました。とりあえず改善に向けた話し合いが行われているようですので投稿ブロックをかけるのはやめておきますが、互いの編集を差し戻す行為は投稿ブロックの方針で特にブロックの対象として指定されています。
    これはノートなどでの対話を試みているか否かには関係なく、三度以上の差し戻しを対象とするもので、冷静さを保って、荒れた雰囲気などを作り出さないようにするためのものです。
    そのルールの意味をご理解下さって、冷静に対話に臨んでいただけることを強く希望します。
    また、二度までであれば差し戻しを行ってもよいというわけでもなく、Aphaeaさんが荒らしの類でないことは明らかですので、今回の一連の行動については非常に残念に思います。どうか建設的な対話をされるようにお願いします。
    <sig+timestamp>

  1. Tomos
  2. Tomos
  3. Aphaia

  1. Aphaia

Part II.

A. 経緯

(Aphaia)

Tomos' reply edit

Again, I am very sorry to take so much time to prepare this reply. I thought I would simply give up on preparing summary, but was not sure about it, either.

  1. Regarding this discussion itself:
    • I am aware of your point about my partiality. Now that you believe that my actions were in good-faith, the problem might be smaller and less urgent, but I thought our talk deserved at least some summary, and possibly some final round.
    • If you suggest that we finish the talk at this point (either with or without the summary I prepared, or with your midifications/comments to the summary), I have no objection.
  2. Regarding my partiality:
    • Like I wrote above, I think I was worried about you more than about the other user. Yet I am not awere if my messages were that different in terms of showing favor or friendliness to either side. Of course, it is up to interpretation. So I would like to have more clues how it seemed inpartial to your eyes, or others' eyes.
    • While I am thinking that my messages were not partial, I can not make real apology. I think I need some help here.
  3. Regarding negligence:
    • I am still not sure about negligence that you mentioned. My impression is that you might have taken it back for some reason, and now you think it is not important. Is that the case?

Aphaia responces: edit

Thank you for your summary. Now I don't take your late reply ill, but I have to say I was embarassed with your recent behavour: you had corrected a spelling error, and it had been your sole edit. I took it the sign you lose the intention to continue the argument no more. Other folks I requested for their perceptions agreed on that. Methinks if you had left a brief note you could give me no reply soon, or even a note that you had read my note, it would be nicer for me and helped us to avoid misunderstandings.

You might notice now your summary contains some additional parts written in colors. If needed, you could remodificate those parts. On my part I would like to know why you asked me to publish my mail on meta or somewhere, since I don't understand why it can help avoid your misunderstanding (if I recall correctly you wrote so).

Briefly, as for negligence: I haven't taken it back. Simply it haven't been my major issues from the beginning. I felt you forced me to deal with that vandal, with a threat, and in my opinion it is a principal task of administrators, hence you were of negligence. So your negligence was refered in my complaint toward your threat as a subsidiary, but now threat is no more our topic, your negligence has therefore less importance for me: or precisely if you neglected the issues previously or not is of less importance for me.

And the matter of partiality remains. I showed you some additional materials, like how I took your first message on the above. I hope it serves you as clues.

Analyses of Tomos' initial messages toward two parties edit

Now I changed my thought and it would be better not to remain any points as possible as we can. On my part it is over; I have forgiven you already. But if you would like to discuss or clarify some points, I am willing to express my perceptions and opinions.

As for partiality I assume you are thinking there are no clear distinction: you would have liked us two to have a constructive dialogue and your notion focused on this point. You wrote somehow, at least you are thinking so, different things to each party. It reflected your worring on me or other situations but you didn't find significance on those differences.

But we had different contexts. In general differences between similar texts are usually crucial to find the particular and proper meaning of both texts: a different part on closely similar two texts is very effective to clarify their differences. So you aren't surprised some folks begin to remark such difference. And I belong to such a tribe.

So let me analize your initial messages. Here I use your own translations. It would help me to undertand your position and help you to realize what I took and what implication your text could have. For now I left many parts, such as, your concedence, please don't mind my rudeness to refer to it again here: but let yourself remind on that you were not always a best reader o' your own text.

Message to Aphaia edit

Your translation:

(To Aphaia's talk:) Hello. I was notified by another person and took a look at relevant pages. It seems that the talk is going on to improve the situation, so I would avoid placing a block, but 3 revert is against our block policy regardress of if dialogue is attempted on a talk page or elsewhere. I strongly hope you understand the meaning of the policy and have a talk calmly. I was also wondering why you were so quick to revert the other user's edit.
You translated so freely. I found right now you made an addition here. I don't say you made a cheat but you wrote me in fact:
(end of line)
so there was no line like that "I was also wondering why you were so quick to revert the other user's edit." A translator is a traitor, indeed. I say again, you didn't rewrote your own text but wrote what you had thought. And such interpretation or free translation wouldn't help to realize us how the text - what you had written in fact - could indicate.
So here I omitted your last line in this part and engaged myself in its previous line. It says
I strongly hope you understand the meaning of the policy and have a talk calmly.
We can call it a request, a demand, an order or any name we like. Though I took it as a demand at the first glance, you thought probably you made a proper request. For convinence, here we call it Request 1.
Request 1 has two parts: 1-1 requests to understand "the meaing of the policy", 1-2 requests to have a talk calmly. Both are reasonable and appropriate to the policy in general. But it doesn't mean it was appropriate to the situation. We will refer this point later.
In general, a request is meaningful in case A. the speaker is uncertain if it really happens or continues and B. the speaker however thinks it is possible. You thought probably we could and would be able to have a calm dialogue, I guess, but remark the condition A: it means also you were uncertain it wouldn't be and/or you were uncertain it didn't. But the context was here not enough determine those possible situations. The request 1 can be read as a simple reminder to policy and guideline. It depends on the context which the rest of text would give us, and here the differences between two texts become functional.
I point out the Request I could suggest the receiver of this message didn't 1. understand the meaning of the policy nor 2. have a talk calmly. The point 1 was there uncertain but I remarked this possibility. As for point 2. I thought you were thinking we didn't. And my own view was different as mentioned in the summary above. For request 1. I would reply it was an inapropriate accusation in fact, for request 2. I did everything what I could: so if you hope me much more without giving any further help, it would overweigh me. But I kept in mind there was a possiblity this phrase expressed your own expection and general policy as far as you thought.
Let's go further. You followed as the below:
(To Aphaia's talk:) Please note that reverting up to two times is okay, and it is clear that the other user is not a vandal, so I feel sad about the series of actions you took this time. Please edit pages without losing temper or create the rough atmosphere.
Now another request comes, We call it Request 2:
Please edit pages without losing temper or create the rough atmosphere.
Request 1. has a form of expression of the speaker's hope. Request 2. has more straight form. It is a request or a demand (it depends on its context) in its form already. Request 2 implies two things clearly 2-1. the receiver of the message is losing temper or will and/or 2-2. has created the rough atmosphere or possble to create the rough atmosphere in the future, or it is meaningless to designate it to a particular person.
Request 2. gives us a negative impression since it includes two "don't". The speaker seemed to assume his listner has broken criteria(s) of the community and request to esteem it.
I translated and/or instead of your "or". On my part I read it "and", so I took your message it labelled me to lose temper and create the rough atmosphere. So it made me sad because you took me so wrong, and felt very embarassed because of the accusive implication of this message. Indeed I took it as below:
Please note that reverting up to two times is okay (sic), though you forgot or ignored it, and it is clear that the other user is not a vandal, so you offended 3RR and you should have a dialogue with the other user friendly, so I feel sad about the series of actions you took this time. I am very dissapointed with you: you must not have behave in such a manner, but well, I generously you a chance once again instead of placing blocking on you. So go in peace and appliciation, but don't forget I can do even now according to the rule; even if you have a dialogue, you know, it is not for us reason enough avoid placing a block. And others would relatively support the latter, they expected me to place a blocking on you, but I didn't, so now you realize I am verily on a good faith even for sorts of you. but Please edit pages without losing temper or create the rough atmosphere, not like as you did recently, or I should come back to place a block on you, though in that case I would be really sad, but it would be totally up to you.
You could oppose you didn't intend such the above, but anyway it was what I took. Or for example "another person" in the second sentence would be irrelevant, at least I thought. Now I guess you described plainly the situation but then I thought it an implication "there was at least one person who had no favor to you". And then your "consedencing and threating" wording followed, so I utilized those implications as the context of the whole text. But for now, only I would like to show you that your last line could sound offensive and accusing in a certain context. And I have to add, for readers including me who thought I didn't lost temper, such request seemed inapropriate request on misunderstanding or scapegoating with an effort to give a wrong impression.

Tomos' Message to User:A edit

Now we turn to another message to the other user.

(To the User:A's talk:) ...
Now I found you had mentioned there to the calmness twice, it reflects supposingly your attitude: prausibly you suspected if User:A knew the rule or estimate to keep calmness and to have a dialogue (and I convince you evaluate it strongly). But you seemed to avoid carefully asserting that the user has broken calmness or didn't understand rules. In general, if one failed or ignored to constructive dialogue, it was not so accusing by itself: there are many users who use seldom talk. Moreover "please have a construcive dialogue" sounds more positive than the other conclusion on my talk. And I point out the idea of "constructive dialogue" itself appeared here first, even though a relevant idea (calmness) had been already mentioned. So in my opinion it sounded not so strong accusing, it has a weak context to apply to a particular case (it reflects the fact you didn't know him so closely, so you could write only a general situation, assumingly).
I suppose that was the reason some people admited here partiality. Your wording toward me sounded a bit acusing and scorning, but here multiple possiblities of reading are available for us. that is, "now I should talk to you about blocking, as if you were a newbie who doesn't know our policy. You could avoid such a situation: you shouldn't have done so and you could, and you knew it already, I am sure. But ... what happened on you?" or "Hey, what did you two do? Of course you can realize easily what you did ... Well, I am indicating your situation as an unacceptable one a bit harshly and you will be embarassed, but I expect you know your deed deserve so and you won't take my wording so bad. As for the other user, I am not sure he knows our policy nor if he is a good editor... so I talk to him in a much softer voice, but you understand it would be necessary and effective for that person. And if possible, I expect the other party will also realize it could be he or she who was accused so (grin)." Those weren't what I took, supposingly nor you intented, but without intentional consedence, they could be interprited in such manners. Now I guess, simply you were there worried about me, not only about the situation itself, since you could not have understood why I have behaved in such a way (I however suppose you understand now better than before). On the other hand, though you were polite and frinedly to the other user, but also bureaucratic; you didn't try to guess background of his edits so closely as my case, and tried to be nice as usual and urged him to be nice too.

Conclusion of analyses edit

Conclusion: The clues are therefore the last sentences of each messages: once you said you were "somehow emphasizing [me] to be calm and not disturb the atmosphere more strongly but not so much". I don't however think so. Or precisely I admit we can say differences between them were slight although, but at the same time there are indeed differences, and in decent wording like yours such slight differences were enough to make the difference of meanings and connotations. Anyway the language is a construcive system of diffrences, hence a difference of text could bear a distincution of meaning. So let me list such differences between two texts:

  1. You put a request on both side. I pointed out one is positive "have a constructive talk" and sounds not definitively applied to a particular person, though suggestive. It is a recommendation at last. On the other hand another is negative ("(don't) los(ing) temper and (don't) create the rough atmosphere") and sounds applied directly to a certain person.
  2. You emphasized him to be calm twice in each messages. I think you found and find even now no clear distincution between two messages, but in my opinion in the message toward me you were a bit assertive or implicative that I haven't cared for calmness ("without ... create the rough atmosphere." ). It sounded stronger than the other message, so you seemed to emphasize this aspect on me. On the other hand, you mendioned to "spoiling the atmosphere" in the message to User:A, but you stated it (at least superficially) as a general standard, not strongly his particular case. So there was a room to say you didn't mention he had spoiled the atmosphere.
  3. Back to the Request 2, on my talk, its ending part on "the rough atmosphere" was emphasized by its previous phrase "losing temper". Or both emphasized each other.
I admit any edit war might bring a rough atmosphere, so you had a right to mention it in your message. But it was partial to mention it in those way. At least it was better for you not to combine those two concepts in this way.

Perhaps you could say if you mentioned your sadness on this series of actions in both note, you meant both side were responsible. But your wording sounds more accusing and emphasized your suspect if I lose temper and/or brought the rough atmosphere even unintentionally, and because of this slight (from your view) emphasized, some folks including me thought you treated both side not in a same manner, hence partially. So Kk wrote, presumably, it was not a cunning manner to deal with such a situation. You would like to help both parties and improve the situation, but it could be possible to have cause further troubles like in this case and to give a wrong impression as if you were a sort of people who scapegoat regulars to soothe newbies, I dare say, that was what happened here indeed. I didn't think everyone took it so, but I know some people took it a scapegoating. And as for me, I don't think now it was a scapegoating but still feel I put a wrong label: losing temper. And I apologized to put some reasons of misunderstanding, but I feel I can't bear a part of your assumption such as that I lost temper and forget therefore policies because of anger. Frankly saying I can't understand your logic in this part. In above I wrote in a brunt manner rather than polite. I expect I didn't exceed beyond the necesssity required by things, and that you understand it was necessary to represent and clarify the situation. I hope you won't be worried with what I wrote on the above. It is over for me, and I am sure you know how I consider you for now, I could therefore write in so a bold and straight manner.

I wish I wrote sufficiently and hope it helps you.

Tomos' corrections& a clarification edit

Thank you for your detailed explanations. I found some parts quite helpful. But I noticed that I had to make some corrections about what I wrote.

"I was also wondering why you were so quick to revert the other user's edit."

That sentense is not meant to be a translatin of my message, indeed. As you pointed out, I did not say anything of that sort in the initial message back then.

I wrote it as a part of my explanation of what I was thinking, not a translation of what I wrote.. I think I placed it wrong. I should belong to the paragraph right before the translation.

Also, I wrote (originally in Japanese) "reverting up to two times is not okay" whereas I translated it as "revertng up to two times is okay" ..well, I suppose this mistake did not cause serious consequences to the discussion so far, but the meaning is the opposite.

Also, one clearification about the part you do not understand well: I did not say, or meant to indicate that you forgot the details of the three-revert rule "because of your anger" - at that time, I was simply thinking you might have forgotten them because they are details.

"I was also wondering why you were so quick to revert the other user's edit."

それから、英語の部分で、"reverting up to two times is not okay" と書いている部分がありますが、これはnot okay の間違いです。

Thank you for your remarks. I agree on that it was most suitable for other part. And I appliciate your clarification. I admit you didn't write so: you wrote that you had been worried if I had been angry and/or forget the rule.
But I am not sure if I can figure out your argument. Would you let me interprete it?
You made two assumptions on me: about my anger and my unconciousness on the rule. And you thought those possilibities could be pararel, not exclusive to each other. But you thought no causality between two possibility.
More closely, you thought if I forget the rule in details. And if so, I had been anger with the user:A and it could have benn my motivation to revert his edits. But it didn't mean you doubted if I was so anger as to ignore the rule (the anger can't therefore serve as a reason of my action solely, although your statement "... or ..." seems to contradict this supposition). Is that the case?
