Proposals for closing projects/Closure of Inupiak Wiktionary

This is a proposal for closing and/or deleting a wiki hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. It is subject to the current closing projects policy.
The proposal is accepted and the proposed actions should be taken.
- A Language Committee member provided the following comment: The undersigned recommended the following to Langcom, which was unopposed and therefore also proposed to the Board: >>The wiki has only a very limited number of pages (no activity unfortunately, of course). The specific reason why the project is problematic and proposed for closure is that it is a frequent target of spambots (also called "honeypot"). This wiki's activity is nonexistent. The most active contributors seem to have left a while ago, the most recent being Jehane & Louli (This may not be true, as I didn't dig into it very much). Accessorily, the SWMT has had to remove spam from there, which seems to be the only purpose of that wiki now. It would be better to lock it down until some more volunteers show up. - Lock/close I did a random sample of oldids. There are only 6,500 edits to the Wiki and from my sample, most are bot edits or userpage creations. Therefore, I support the nomination. MBisanz talk 02:43, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
- I support closure. For some reasons that wiki is the source of spambot activity only. Stewards and other global helpers spent most time blocking and locking spambots and vandals over the past months, being the only real activity of that wiki; with the exception of automated userpage creations by Pathoschild's SynchBot which can't be counted as content. Stewards had to face once a non-stop massive spambot attack that we had to take extreme measures for a couple of hours to stop it. The Project has some content which may be a blocker to this request however IMHO it is so little that it should not be a barrier to move the wiki to the Incubator where the little content will stay free of spam -or at least with less spam and more oversight- and can eventually grow rather than to keep the wiki open and let the spam activity poisoning that site over and over and wasting volunteers time. - Keep. Project at least has content pages and inactivity / having spam is no reason to lock a wiki. There are over 100 pages. Give the Iñupiat a chance. πr2 (t • c) 18:12, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
- I have restored your vote because I felt like responding to your message. I do not see the point in leaving open a wiki where the home page hasn't even been changed, I believe it is proof enough that the wiki is simply empty of contributors. And yes, I believe the two first factors you mentioned are a reason for locking a wiki. Had there been only spam, I wouldn't have made this proposal, but it is a mere waste of time to have stewards and global sysops constantly watch a wiki with so little content and so much spam. Of course if new Inupiat speakers show up, they can always regain access to that wiki, it is the purpose of a lock. Elfix 18:27, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- According to the Closing projects policy, "...small/inactive wikis do not generally cause harm if they stay open: automatic spam is always blocked, contrary to the past." There are fewer than 10000 speakers of Inupiak now due to linguistic suppression. Inupiat children were required to speak English in schools. It's not like it's a completely unstudied language, there's a chance you'll find someone who knows enough to contribute (but it would be better to have a native speaker). For example, w:Rosetta Stone (software) is (was?) developing software to help people learn the language. I'd be fine with closure (since that can't be changed at this point), but I would prefer to leave it open. πr2 (t • c) 03:40, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
