CU Rights query

I have been granted my admin rights again on Meta (for which thanks). I had no particular plan to request CU rights but after a post on my talk page I looked at the current situation and see that there are currently 4 CUs on Meta (all stewards) and one is currently travelling (Dferg). After a break of 8 months folks might not see the return of those rights as appropriate and I would understand that but if the community feel it is ok then I have no issues with dealing with CU requests on here again. I may be "rusty" but I have still kept an eye on such subject here and pointed out one or two that I felt were worth looking at. Comments welcome :) thanks --Herby talk thyme 15:58, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

I probably should point out that I have no plans to be as active as I was however I would not suggest it if I was not planning to be quite active (my views on activity and rights have not changed!). --Herby talk thyme 16:12, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
  • Personally, I'd have no problems. You had been trusted with the tool previously and since you gave them up in good faith, I don't see why you can't have the tools back. :) Pmlineditor  16:03, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
  • (editconflicted) Well, perhaps I'm on COI in this, but I support you returning to the CheckUser team per the reasons above. These days, specially, we are being targeted by persistent vandals/socks and I think we could use more eyes here. If a bureaucrat wants to accept this, please post on RfP. Thanks, --Dferg 16:07, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
PS.: CheckUser rights originally granted per Meta:Requests for checkuser/Herbythyme. --Dferg 19:11, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
  • Per the people above me. I don't have any problems with an other cu and people willing to help are rare. So why not? Barras talk 16:14, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
  • I would not suggest it if I was not planning to be quite active-So why not? --WizardOfOz talk 17:06, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
    • Because getting the rights back to not be active to use them is kinda silly ;) /me has similar views to rights and activity. James (T C) 19:08, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
  • /self breaks out the "draft Herby" placards -- Avi 17:25, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
  • Agree with the above, you were trusted and I have no problem with you having them back, more help is better. James (T C) 19:08, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Done, welcome back! --Dferg 19:29, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks all - I'll try to help as much as I can. --Herby talk thyme 08:28, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Blanking of comments

John Vandenberg (Special:Contributions/John_Vandenberg) has repeated blanked a counter signature to an RfC. All RfCs and Proposals allow for people who oppose the matter to sign. He has done this twice against both the spirit and letter of our policies and guidelines surrounding RfC, blanking/vandalism, and related matters. There is no legitimate justification except that he disagrees with any statement and has made it clear he is not unbiased in the matter. Ottava Rima (talk) 14:08, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Both you and vvv have a direct conflict of interest and cannot "handle" it. Ottava Rima (talk) 16:15, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Help registering User:NSD

I got User:NSD registered on enwiki, but it won't register here. I tried creating the account here, but it won't let me. Is anything wrong? ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ messagechanges) 12:46, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Hello,

There was a useraccount with almost the same name on Meta, this made it not possible to create that account.

I renamed the account, you should be able to register now. Let me know if it failed

Best regards,

Huib talk 12:56, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, everything works now. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ messagechanges) 13:10, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Ok, good to hear :-) Huib talk 18:18, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Please semi-protect MakerFairePedia/ExhibitName on Meta

Please semi-protect MakerFairePedia/ExhibitName so that it won't get clobbered by noobies (and we intend to find a mass of them) from the form at MakerFairePedia.

This needs to be done by Saturday morning 10:00 a.m. Pacific time. Thank you!

Note: This whole MakerFairePedia 2010 thing will only be on Meta for less than a month, then it will be migrated to Wikibooks. The fine print of policies strongly suggest that's the best way. 71.198.176.22 00:36, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

I've protected it but I'm not totally sure why this on meta... Where are you reading a policy that you think makes it belong here? I'm not saying it's a bad thing at all just seems like it would be better starting off at the project it is going to end up on (or incubator if it is trying to be it's own project). Doesn't really seem within scope here though. James (T C) 01:16, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! WikiBooks policy suggests Wikiversity, now that I look at it again. I'd be happy to move it there, but an incubator sounds far better. Is it possible to set up a "MakerFairePedia" incubator in less than a week? 71.198.176.22 01:27, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Public speakers

since User:Thekohser was permanently banned from metawiki and most other wikimedia wikis, i removed him from the list of public_speakers. some reverting followed and now a discussion has started at Talk:Public_speakers#The_restoration_of_Thekohser_as_a_speaker. which could do with some of your views, opinions and input. thanks and very best, oscar 22:23, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Only from sysops and bureaucrats? I suggest you move your call for input to the forum! Guido den Broeder 13:06, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

Hillgentleman

User:Hillgentleman keeps replacing board member with trustee throughout meta,[1][2][3][4][5] which is not always implied or intended and in some cases (e.g. local chapters) simply false. Guido den Broeder 22:28, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Guido, don't think is a very big deal. In the USA, these terms are often synonymous and sometimes used interchangeably when referring to the members of the governing boards of non-profit organizations. A non-profit's board may be called a "board of directors", a "board of trustees" or, in rarer cases a "board of governors". If it's a board of directors, individual board members may be called either "board members" or "directors"; if it's a board of trustees, individual board members may be called either "board members" or "trustees". There is no functional difference between a board of trustees or a board of directors that I'm aware of -- it's just a matter of what they choose to call themselves.
I think Abd gives a pretty good assessment of the situation in his comments on Hillgentelman's talk page at User_talk:Hillgentleman#Boards.
Wikimedia's projects have so many challenges and opportunities that I suggest all parties just leave the edits as they presently stand, whether they refer "board member" or "trustee" and move on to something more pressing. I don't think this needs intervention from a sysop or even much passion from the participants.
That's just my two cents; others may disagree.--A. B. (talk) 00:50, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, A.B., I didn't see your comment here before I yanked mine from that Talk page. It's there in history, though. I decided to yank my assets from the middle of a developing catfight, or whatever this weird affair is. Is it the phase of the moon, or what? To passers-by: nothing here worth wasting time on. Not yet, anyway. Yes, A.B., absolute agreement. --Abd 01:04, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
We are not the USA. In other countries, board member and trustee are very different things. And biographical information should be correct, especially if the information is of a formal nature and/or provided by the person themselves. However, Daniel has reverted the user's edits. Hopefully that will suffice. Regards, Guido den Broeder 09:30, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
