I created a script to convert Chinese translations to all its variants (see Special:Contributions/Liangent-bot for the test run) so translators do not need to repeat their work on zh-hans and zh-hant. The script is expected to run regularly and read all new revisions in Translations:*/zh, translate it to all variants, then edit Translations:*/zh-* to update the translated version. If the bot goes into production, some notice text should be added to ask users not to update /zh-hans and /zh-hant, and use /zh instead. Liangent 11:26, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Hi. I've seen the edits it's been doing on the RC feed, if you could get another translator (human!) to confirm that what it is doing is okay, then I'm happy to approve this bot - and we can ask the developers of the translate extension about adding the message about using /zh directly into the translate extension. Therefore, approving for trial, please ask some other translators to confirm that the bots edits are okay here. The Helpful One 12:19, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I tested more and found (surprisingly) that making translations in /zh-* may be not required at all (neither by hand or with bot): on [1] an auto-converted version is available and it can be reached by choosing /zh and then a variant in page headers. Maybe we can just disable all /zh-* and let converters do the rest? Liangent 17:46, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- If we go on this way, the extension needs to be fixed first to output proper <div id="mw-content-text" lang="zh" dir="ltr" class="mw-content-ltr">, or some people will get dissatisifed because the browser fails to choose a proper font. Liangent 17:51, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- gerrit:9860, but I'm not sure how it affects the extension. Liangent 18:10, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Questions. I don't understand quite well what the bot does. It seems it translates from zh to all variants of zh like zh-hans. Right?. If so, how the translation is done? Automatic?. Will it cause any troubles with our Tranlate extension? Regards. —Marco Aurelio (audiencia) 13:19, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- It's automatic based on the language converter in MediaWiki, and expect to just cooperate with the Translate extension. However I decided not to run it now and I'm trying to improve stuff in MediaWiki so we can make full use of the converter in MediaWiki to create translations in variants on the fly. - Ok. Thanks for your reply. Does it mean you no longer want the botflag? Regards. — MA (audiencia) 18:34, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
