Non-free content on Meta
Hi all. Since Meta doesn't have an exemption doctrine policy that allows the use of non-free content, I assume that such content should by default not be acceptable on Meta. The non-free content page seems to agree, stating that local uploads are acceptable on Meta but not non-free content. There's an old policy proposal at Meta:Fair use, now marked as historical. However, we still have a copyright tag, {{fairuse}}, which implies that such content is acceptable by policy. Also, there are quite a few images in Category:Unfree images. As non-free content seems to be de facto allowed, I think we should discuss reviving the proposal to make it official policy. Any thoughts? Jafeluv 10:19, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
- Fair use is complicated, unlawful in some countries and only gives headaches. On the other hand it helps us to provide images that otherwise we wouldn't have. I personally do not like fair use and I oppose allowing fair use images being hosted at meta. I do not see a need too. -- Dferg ☎ talk 15:03, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- Fair use is strictly forbidden on Meta AFAIK, but there's a huge backlog of old images (that's why we have {{GFDL-presumed}} for images with no license at all). Nemo 12:47, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
Commons also as a repository for templates and pages
Yes, as the name says. Please see the discussion here (and comment there), and remember to see the original proposal at Bugzilla:4547. Regards. Rehman 06:06, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
