Learning patterns/Wikiverse World Café - getting to know Wikimedia projects and volunteers
What problem does this solve?
The whole world knows Wikipedia. But how many people actually know how the articles are created and what foundations they are built on? Who knows about Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata? We feel there is a need to provide basic educational work on the three most important Wikimedia projects and their principles: volunteers, open licenses and open access.
What is the solution?
In our World Café, large groups have the opportunity to get a first and practical glimpse behind the scenes of Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata – and become motivated to get involved themselves.
Format
Procedure: The event begins with an introductory presentation that explains the concept and practice of open licenses, how they work, and why it makes sense for authors to license their content as freely as possible. Participants then have the opportunity to become acquainted with the various Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikidata or Wikimedia Commons in smaller workshop groups, under the direct guidance of experienced users. Participants change tables roughly every 20 minutes, giving them the opportunity to learn about a variety of projects.
Duration and group size: Each Wikiverse World Café lasts at least 90 minutes and is designed for groups of 20 to 200 people. A functioning wireless Internet connection is required for the Wikimedia project presentations and each table must feature a computer with a large monitor.
Aim
At our World Cafés, participants get to know the wide range of Wikimedia projects and learn how open licenses work. The event is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills they require to be able to incorporate their own digitized content into the Wikiverse, thus making it accessible and usable for as many people as possible.
