Comments from DSaroyan (WMF) edit

Hello @Pperdiga, thanks again for submitting this grant request. I have completed the initial review and have a few questions and comments:

  • We currently require that you make the community notification in advance. As described in question #2, could you please provide links to on-wiki pages where you have informed these communities about your proposed work?

I announced the project beforehand on the Wikidata Telegram group (I believe that would not be framed as an on-wiki space), to ask for reviews or suggestions. Afterward (just after finishing the proposal), I announced it in the Wikimedia Forum, in the topic named "New project proposal - WikiYouth: Building Open Data Together".

  • Do you have any experienced Wikidata editors in the team who will be supporting you during the training sessions and editing? Could you please provide these editors’ usernames?

We do not have a Wikidata editor in my team, but we are receiving tips from Cesar Filho (CFilho on-wiki) from Wikimedia Brasil, to guide us on what would be the most effective or interesting strategies to engage the youth in the wiki community and how to produce something useful for the outside community.

  • Your plan is to improve Wikidata items on themes related to Internet Governance. Could you please provide some examples of these items? Are you planning to prepare a list of suggested items/topics for the editors?

We plan to work mainly with pages about institutions and events, since their properties seem easier to grasp, although contributions in subjects page (such as "encryption") will be possible. Our idea is to get pages with more info to be an example to be followed, such as Creative Commons, ICANN or the Internet Governance Forum. These pages will be used by participants as a model to add data about other Internet Governance organizations or events involving youth as organizers, members or as one of their target audiences. Adding data about local or regional institutions will be encouraged. This time, to make it easier for newcomers, we are going to provide a long list with examples to be followed and pages that can be further developed

  • In which languages do you plan to edit Wikidata?

We chose Wikidata specifically because of the language barrier in an international event with young people from all over the world. Since the Wiki Dashboard does not require to specify a language to keep track of changes in Wikidata, our plan is to allow contributions in all languages

Looking forward to hearing from you. Best regards, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 13:45, 3 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Costs for Presents edit

From my point of view the prices should be not donated so high. I think that more than 30 Euro for the first position is too much. For 30 Euro is it possible to buy a book. I for myself dont need a price to take part in a contest and from my point of view it is important that you give the winners a coupon and not cash directly. It is something where I think it is important to think about, how high the prices should be at a maximum.--Hogü-456 (talk) 20:31, 4 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi @Hogü-456, thanks for your feedback. No winners will receive cash prizes, it is forbidden by the Rapid Grants regulation. Although I agree with you that people should not need this kind of compensation to be a part of contests about open knowledge, this is undoubtedly a very effective stimulus to engage new people in wiki projects. Since it will be delivered online and we have a voluntary team to work on the project, we believe that the money we receive would be better invested if it were directed almost entirely at stimulating participation --Pperdiga (talk) 00:10, 19 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Correction on ending date + an invite edit

Hi, @DSaroyan (WMF)

I have corrected the ending date - IGF Day 0 is on December 5th, not 6th.

I also have new information, that I have also just shared with Mehrdad Pourzaki: The IGF Secretariat has advised us that they want to turn the Youth Summit main event into a high-level event, with the participation of high level officials. If we can hold the WikiYouth Contest, I would like to share my allotted time in this main event (of about 5-10 minutes at around 17h30 CEST, on December 5th) with someone from the Wikimedia Foundation, in recognition of the partnership and for all the help that was given to us until now. Would anyone be available to do that? (preferentially someone who is already attending the Internet Governance Forum, for better coordination)

Cordially, --Pperdiga (talk) 23:46, 3 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
