Further comments from WMF
editHello, GoEThe; thank you for submitting this grant proposal. We have a few questions for you.
- In your proposal, you say that the idea is to increase capacity in the volunteer community in Portugal. Can you give us more details about your vision in this regard? We would appreciate knowing also if there are references of past conversations within the Portugal community regarding desires to increase capacities. If there are other users who are invested in this, we would love for them to chime in.
- Beyond the vision for this capacity building, we would like to know how you plan to increase capacities. Could you give us an idea of what the agenda will look like for this meetup?
- Given that most of the support you are requesting is for the travel of participants, we want to know how you will work to ensure that these funds are distributed fairly. How many people will you be able to support? Will there be a selection process of some sort?
Regards, MMontes (WMF).
- Dear MMontes (WMF), thank you for your questions, and sorry for the delay to reply to these questions.
- Certainly. There are many aspects that we think the Portuguese community would like to receive training on, from the use of automated tools for editing Wikipedia/Wikidata, integration with Wikidata, participation in GLAM initiatives, but also in conflict management, and engaging with new contributors.
- There have been several discussions about implementing on-wiki training for advanced users in programming, such as this one. More recently, the question has come up again on the strategy discussion on pt.wikipedia [1]. We have also been discussing internally in Wikimedia Portugal and with AffCom about how to increase capacity within the chapter (:wmpt:Plano_de_capacitação 2018). This is something that we have discussing informally for many years within the community and Wikimedia Portugal, that even with detailed tutorials online such as this one, there is a barrier to people participating in a sustained way. We are hoping that in-person hands-on training will help some move past this barrier. During our activities with partner institutions in Portugal, we have also been asked frequently to provide such training to their staff, in order to help their volunteers become more confident in editing the projects.
- I have started to ask feedback from volunteers from our communities if this would be something they are interested in (w:pt:Wikipédia:Esplanada/geral/Encontro Nacional de Wikimedistas - WikiCon Portugal (19mai2019).
- A likely format is a series of workshops where a presentation of a topic is followed by hands-on training or discussion. A typical day could include 2-3 short workshop sessions. As mentioned before, topics will include Wikidata training, integration with other Wikimedia projects and tools; discussing Strategy 2030 for Portugal (chapter and Portuguese speaking Wikimedia projects; reinforcing, development, and strategic planning of GLAM initiatives future and currently underway; Wikimedia/OpenStreetMap/OpenGeo/Ubuntu collaboration, conflict resolution in online communities; communication and social media techniques and capabilities; educational resources and tools (dashboard, ...), techniques for onboarding newcomers, and so on. Please notice that the agenda/format is not finalized, and is likely to change due to availability of speakers/trainers, and the number of people that sign up.
- We expect to support all the members of the Wikimedia community that apply with the budget that we layed out. We are also looking for other sources of funding to bring in more participants and speakers/trainers. We will have registration open as soon as we have confirmation of funding and a schedule. We will evaluate the needs of particular individuals in terms of travelling and accommodation. If it happens that we have more registrations than we can support financially, we will give preference to under-represented genders and communities, such as ethnic minorities and people coming from rural areas or ultraperipheral regions of Portugal (https://ec.europa.eu/regional_policy/en/policy/themes/outermost-regions/). Applicants will be asked if they need support to travel and for accommodation upon registration, and they will be informed of our support in good time, so that they can plan their travel accordingly. Grant request approved
editHello, GoEThe; thank you for resubmitting this grant request. We stopped funding similar travel-based grants in the last months; however, given that this was originally submitted in March and would have been approved then had it not been for different complications, we are approving it now. Regards, MMontes (WMF) (talk) 19:41, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
Change of date
editWe would like to request a change of the end date for this grant to the end of February 2020, as we would like to move the event to January (coinciding with the weekend around Wikipedia's birthday). This is because we are currently organizing Wiki Loves Monuments and we have a Strategy Salon on 15 September, and we need more time to organize this conference. Thank you for your consideration! GoEThe (talk) 09:55, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
