Comments from WMF

edit

Hi, Geraki, thank you for submitting this final report and your expense documentation. I have reviewed and accepted the expense documentation. I have also reviewed this final report and have a few questions and comments:

  1. Congratulations on another successful WLM and on exceeding all the goals you set for it!
  2. Could you please update the report with a link to the category on Commons of all the photos from the 2018 contest?
  3. You mentioned that some professional photographers were recruited through WLM. Have they stayed involved with Commons since?
  4. Grantees often struggle to attract media attention; do you have any tips for other grantees on how to secure media coverage or work with the media?

Warmly, LSmith (WMF) (talk) 03:25, 24 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi LSmith (WMF), thank you for the review.

  • I updated the report with a link to the category on Commons of all the photos.
  • I tried to check the activity of all participants but it seems that the Outreach Dashboard cannot check upload activity in Commons, and did not find any other tool for that.
  • Media attention does not flash, but it is built through time. a) We post announcements in the user group's blog which is active all year and reposted and retweeted by other organizations. b) We send a press release to news agencies, newspapers and journalists. We try to keep this mailing list clear (f.e. example we stop sending mails to addresses that never open them, so we lower the chance that our mails are considered spam). c) Sometimes, for new activities, we create a small facebook advertisement with journalists as the target audience. Once you establish a good reputation, media attention comes easily through the established channels.

Thanks, -Geraki TL 07:40, 24 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Geraki, thank you for updating the report with the link to the Commons category. It's wonderful to see the results of the contest—there are some beautiful images!

You're right, getting media coverage requires building relationships and takes lots of thought, effort, and consistency. I appreciate your reflections on it and will share them with other grantees who are hoping to have their work covered by the media.

Thank you again for all the hard work you put into this grant. I am accepting this report now. The last thing we need to do to complete the grant is decide what to do with the remaining funds, which will happen once a WMF program officer has made a decision regarding your new grant application. It is currently under review and we will share a decision with you as soon as possible.
