Questions about your proposal

edit

Dear Tamzin,

Thank you for submitting this proposal. I have some initial questions for you:

  • Can you tell me who the maintainers are for the tool you would like to work on, and whether you have their support for the proposed work? It would be great if you could have them endorse this proposal, if they do support, with a link back to a URL that lists them as maintainers. I ask this because we want to make sure that we don't fund technical work that isn't coordinated with maintainers.
  • Is there any way in which this project would depend on assistance or review by technical staff from the Wikimedia Foundation, either for the work fixing the bugs, or for any approval process before it goes live? Here I ask this because this would require pre-approval from the staff involved before funding.

I may need to follow up with some additional questions next week (Wednesday, as I'll be out of the office Monday and Tuesday) after checking with someone in our technical staff.

Thank you!

Warm regards,

Hey Mjohnson (WMF), not Tamzin but hopefully I can help:
  • We've reached out to the current maintainer (Curb Safe Charmer) in regards to endorsing this.
  • This project wouldn't depend on any assistance or review from WMF staff
I'm sure Tamzin will follow up if I've missed anything 🙂 -- TNT (talk • she/her) 16:17, 10 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
I think that says it pretty well (and to be clear, TNT is the lead on this, not me; she's the one who's led teams before professionally). To elaborate slightly, reFill 2 has been largely abanadoned since January of 2019. (See commit history.) The original dev made some maintenance changes in March; a while after that they handed it over to CurbSafeCharmer, who made some more maintenance changes in October. But its current status is essentially one of life support. TNT has reached out to CSC and another interested user for their endorsement, and we would absolutely welcome any contributions from either of them (and anyone else interested in helping). -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 07:57, 11 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Mjohnson (WMF): I confirm that I support the proposed work (with caveats I will note on the grant page). I am listed as a maintainer of reFill and refill-api. We will need Zhaofeng Li to add us all as owners of refill-api-test. Zhaofeng Li and the other listed maintainers are inactive. I don't think the proposed work would have any impact on WMF technical staff. Curb Safe Charmer (talk) 10:11, 14 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Mjohnson (WMF): Did just want to clarify that we recognize we're past the date we'd initially proposed starting on, but that we're both flexible in that regard, and so if that would be an obstacle to this getting approved, please feel free to take the start date as "at most a week after this is approved" and the end date as "two months after that". -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 23:25, 3 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
