Grants talk:Project/Rapid/San Francisco Art Institute Art and Feminism 2017 Editathon

Hello Niki! Thanks for putting this up here. This seems to be like a well prepared event and a truly interesting location! Make sure that you can take at least a few pictures freely licensed in that room! ;). I have a few questions for you:

  1. As I understand it, you'll be doing this with Britta, right? Can you put her name down and that of any other experienced Wikim/pedian in section 3 of your application? Also, if you can get endorsements, this would be great ;) Thanks.
  2. Just a reminder that we try and keep t-shirts for prizes and really active volunteers, so please use sparingly
  3. I don't see any swag in this, remember that you can order swag from this page to add to your welcome packet.
  4. 125 posters is a LOT of posters to go and put in strategic places. This is a significant part of the budget and I am not sure what the 150 USD for canvasing really entail. Could you give us more precisions on how you intend to work on this?

That's all for now, thanks! Delphine (WMF) (talk) 06:30, 15 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Greetings, Delphine (WMF), and thank you! I have updated our proposal per your questions and comments. Please note that within this update, we have modified the poster plan and budget (we would put out an open call to our community for poster designs, rather than hiring one designer), and have shuffled the requested funds in order to accommodate the modified plan. Additionally, the modified plan has pushed out our end-date to late December. Thanks for your consideration and let me know if you have further quetstions. Hi Delphine and Niki! I'm curious if there might be some way to measure the impact of the posters, to see if this might be a model other Art & Feminism events should pursue as well. Maybe the posters could suggest their own hashtag for Wikipedia edits, Instagram photos, tweets, and so on, so you could look up the hashtag and see if people are noticing the posters and engaging with them in some way? I really like the idea of bringing Wikipedia activism to street art in general. Dreamyshade (talk) 04:04, 18 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Great idea, Britta! We could include a text with instructions on sharing with a suggested hashtag, etc. as a required design element on all the posters. I have added this idea in to the proposal. Thanks!! Nikikana (talk) 07:22, 20 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hello all :). Thanks Nikikana for updating the budget. I'm glad that you plan to involve the community in desiging the posters, but I still think that 125 posters is a lot to put in strategic places. So instead of not funding this, and since you suggested it, I will separate the poster bit from the editathon bit. You'll need to make another grant request for the poster planning, which I think requires more thought, and maybe also more coordination with other Art + Feminism people around the planet ;). I love Britta's idea, I really think this is a creative way of using hashtag and measuring impact of such an action.
In any case, I am not sure what the budget would exactly look like without the poster pieces, so I am going to venture that the total budget for the editathon would be: 450 (drinks etc.) + 200 (misc supplies) + 300 (t-shirts) so 950 USD. I'm taking the swag out, although it is approved, since you can get it through the swag request form. Maybe you can even get it in the San Francisco office directly, as you could the t-shirts, I'm not sure about what is there or not. I hope we still have enough time for all until Saturday. Let us revisit the poster option in another grant request if that's ok :). Feel free to copy/paste the relevant bits from this grant request (please do not update the grant since it is approved, but do signal if I haven't captured all the needs for the editathon so I can adjust the budget if needed. Morgan will touch base with you for the details. Cheers! Delphine (WMF) (talk) 08:24, 21 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much, Delphine (WMF), and WMF!! This funding will go a long way in keeping the participants energized and making all feel welcome, supported, and inspired to make thoughtful and high quality improvements to the encyclopedia this Saturday! We will will certainly get a bunch of freely-licensed photos in the space, and hopefully some video too. And I am inline with everything you say about the poster - definitely needs more thought, and involvement with the community, especially other A+F people on the planet.
Where is the best place to have a discussion to develop a project that eventually leads toward a grant proposal, here on Meta or on a project page like for Art + Feminism, or various Village Pumps.. and then carry it over to a proposal when ready? Thank you!! Nikikana (talk) 15:11, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hello, Nikikana! Those spaces will work, if you think they are most appropriate channels for community input (and you can always link these discussions in future proposals). Depending what you have in mind, this also sounds like something Idealab might be able to help with. It offers the space to shape your idea and transitions it into a proposal for some of our grants programs, whenever you're ready. Hope this helps! Request funded for 950 USD edit

Just making this clearer for archival purposes. The edit-a-thon part of this project is being funded for a budget of 950 USD. Delphine (WMF) (talk) 08:30, 21 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Confirming new end date for grant: 3/25/17 edit

For public record/archival purposes, confirming that new end date for this grant is 3/25/17, not 12/30/17 as listed in the proposal. This is due to the approved funding being only for the 3/25/17 edit-a-thon event portion of the proposal. Nikikana (talk) 18:48, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Request to Extend Grant Report Due Date edit

Hello Morgan, we would like to please request a 10-day extension to the Grant Report Due Date. We are at the end of our school year currently and thus very busy with related projects. An extra 10 days to complete the report would be a tremendous help to us, and would enable us to make the report more thorough and comprehensive. Please let me know and thank you for considering this request. Nikikana (talk) 17:55, 19 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nikikana! The final report and documentation of expenses from this project will now be due on 6 May 2017. Thank you for the notification, and please keep us updated with any foreseeable changes. Best, Morgan Jue (WMF) (talk) 18:03, 19 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
