Grants talk:Project/Rapid/OFWA/African Wikimedia Developers

Latest comment: 6 years ago by Flixtey

Hi Flixtey and Alangi derick. Thank you for this grant request and all your efforts to support the development of a community of Wikimedia developers in across Africa. It's great to see this initiative and we hope the pilot is a success. We have a few comments/questions upon approval below:

  1. We agree that it's a good idea to start with a pilot in Ghana. You mentioned partnering with a few developer communities already who will share the opportunity with their network. Can you share who these communities are and any strategies for expanding this network?
  2. It's great that you're thinking about sustainability of the project. Obviously, developing community is a challenging and long-term process. Beyond engagement on the mailing list, it would be helpful to understand strategies robust developer communities in the movement have used to engage and grow their communities. We recommend reaching out (with support from Quim and Sristhi if needed) to understand their best practices and lessons learned.

Hi Alex Wang (WMF),
  1. As hinted in our grant request, we are partnering 3 developer groups (Google Developer Group (GDG) Ghana, Linux Accra Usergroup and Women Who Code), 2 technology hubs (Impact Hub and Ispace) and 3 university groups (Ashesi University WIki Club, Computer Science Students at University of Ghana and SRC Webster University) to ensure that we reach the right target audience. We also hope that by this means we will reach our expected number of participants for the event.
  2. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about how to keep the communities we start going and growing. We are delighted with the names you suggested because we are very much in touch with the aforementioned people and we will be sure to ask for their support every step of the execution of the project.
