Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Nirmal Dulal/Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in Nepal

Hi Nirmal Dulal. Thanks to you and the team for this grant request and organizing Wiki Loves Monuments in Nepal! We have a few questions before moving forward with approval.

1. Do you have a list of monuments that are not yet covered in Commons or ones that do not have articles/photos on Wikipedia?
2. We understand that many of the monuments in Kathmandu and the nearby areas were badly damaged in the earthquake and thankfully already have photos. Which areas will you be focusing on for the outreach events?
3. Your metrics for photos used on Wikimedia projects is quite high, which is great! Are you going to do any special communications or events around integrating photos to motivate people to do this?
4. Thank you for your thoughtful considerations regarding printing. It is definitely much more environmentally sustainable and often more effective to use other methods of outreach!

Hi Alex Wang (WMF), apologies for late reply, here are the answers:

1. Currently, we don’t have a separate list of the monuments which do not have pictures, but we have published pictures of available monuments in the list of monuments. For now, we are updating geo-location of Monuments so that we can find them using monument tool. And to get coordinations of Monuments we are collaborating with Google local guides group of Nepal.
2. It is true the earthquake damaged so many monuments in Kathmandu and nearby but they are not totally destroyed, and which were damaged they are now under construction. Beside these we have a lot of monuments outside of Kathmandu, we are trying to get them too. We already organized photo-ride to Bhaktapur Durbar Square - Changu Narayan- Banepa - Dhulikhel - Namobuddha - Panauti on 09 September 2017. And will organize another photo-ride to outside of Kathmandu.
3. Yes, we do. We’ve already organized a 80 km photo ride in collaboration with 14 photographers from a famous professional photography groups in Nepal and Google local guides group of Nepal including some wikimedians on 09 September. And going to organize another photo-ride and photo-walk with more photographers in coming weeks to cover our metrics qualitatively and quantitatively.

Hi Nirmal Dulal. Thank you for the detailed responses. It's great you have so many community events planned and we are happy to support the grant. I wanted to clarify that my question #3 was about doing specific activities to encourage participants to add photos to articles in order to help meet your goals around integration. You can use one of your prizes to award the person who adds the most number of photos, or host an editathon for integrating photos and improving/creating articles. Just some ideas to think about!
