Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Mahveotm/WikiClub, Lagos State University 2018 Meetups/Report

Report accepted

edit

Hi, Mahveotm, thank you for submitting this final report. I have reviewed it as well as your expense documentation and am accepting both. Please note that this grant will we settle the underspend (please see note at the end).

Congratulations on completing your grant! I appreciate you sharing all you learned with WMF and the community, as it sounds like you learned some valuable lessons. Here are a few comments and questions:

  • It seems like bad timing — both in terms of when the grant arrived, and in terms of activities at the school — presented a challenge to your activities. We understand that from time to time unforeseen circumstances make it impossible to complete your grant as planned; please know that in the future you may request an extension to the grant's end date if that will help you meet all your goals.
  • We're happy to hear that the swag provided created a sense of belonging and made other students want to learn more about Wikipedia!
  • I'm not sure if the staff strike has resolved yet, but, if it has, have you been able to do any follow up with the staff?
  • Estimating conservatively for the number of articles created (and the number of participants) is a good idea. The more often you host events the easier it will become to estimate achievable goals, but it's always a good idea to underestimate a bit.
  • Have you put anymore thought into conducting some activities remotely?

In regards to the remaining funds of NGN 100,200, you have two options:

  • You can submit a new grant request that would be partially funded by these remaining funds. If you wish to do this, please submit your application by 28 February 2019.
  • You can return the funds to WMF. Instructions for doing so can be found here.

Either way, please respond here on the discussion page and email rapidgrants[at]wikimedia.org to let us know which option you choose.

Thank you for all your hard work carrying out this grant and concluding the reporting. We look forward to supporting your future endeavors!

Hi @LSmith (WMF):, thank you very much for you observation, I assure you they've been duly noted!
  • Please I do not know how to go around an extension, is there a documentation page I can read, or a procedure I should follow. I didn't know an extension was possible.
  • Thanks, I'm humbled!
  • Yay, fortunately the strike was only just called off today! this
  • Thank you! This is very much noted too
  • Yes, unfortunately I've not been able to actually do anything as I'm trying to finish a significant portion of my finals project before resumption so as to give me ample time to organize events upon resumption. I'm sure you will agree with me that academics trumps any volunteer work I'm currently involve in. Since the strike has been called off, I look forward to remote discussions among club members before actual meetups.
  • I have submitted a new grant taking account of the excess funds here
Warm regards,

Response from WMF

edit

Hi, Mahveotm, I hope you are well! Here are responses to your questions:

  1. Yes, if you ever need to extend the end date of a grant, please leave a comment on the grant's discussion page requesting the extension with a new proposed end date. A program officer will then review the request and approve or deny it. Please also email rapidgrants[at]wikimedia.org to let us know that you have made the request on the discussion page.
  2. Of course your school work is more important than volunteer activities :-) We recognize that all our volunteers have many commitments in addition to the volunteering they do with the Wikimedia movement, so we totally understand.

Take care! LSmith (WMF) (talk) 16:56, 8 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
