WikiClub, Lagos State University is an active student registered organization that is dedicated to exploring and contributing to Wikipedia and her sister projects at the Lagos State University. In the previous academic session, we hosted 2 editathons, A developers conference birthed by the AWMD and a contest that catered for students. We also officially introduced Wikip(m)edia to staffs and got positive feedback. This Rapid Grant request is to request funding for WikiClub, Lagos State University's activities in 2019 first semester. This is the 3rd grant request involving the WikiClub (1, 2)
Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".
- The purpose of this Rapid Grant request is to continue WikiClub, Lagos State University's initiatives at the school. Through these events, we have the following goals:
- Introduce Wikipedia and her sister project to newly admitted students
- Take photographs of places around the locality the school is located at
- Add content to the English Wikipedia about already defined scope.
- Initiate developers to contributing to MediaWiki. A lot of talented developers on campus are not really aware of how to contribute.
- Contribute to Wikidata
- Recruit new editors to contribute to Wikimedia project on campus generally especially freshman/staylites as I would be graduating this year.
Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?
- Our planned activities for this semester
- Series of edit-a-thon with already mapped out focus, to be clearly elaborated
- A low budget photo walk to take images of the environment the University is located.
- A contest to increase awareness about Wikidata and encourage participation.
- An Hack-a-thon to consolidate on the previous conference that introduced contributing to MediaWiki
How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?
- We run a mailing list on google groups where we periodically post updates and related information. As the club has been approved by the school authority, we will also design fliers well before the date to be pinned on the noticeboards.
What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
- At the end of the project, we would have achieved the following
- Hosted 4 Edit-a-thon with multiple editors trained on contributing to Wikipedia and several articles created
- Hosted 2 Hackathon (Due to the nature of mediawiki, the first Hackathon intended to span for 3 hours will majorly focus on a brief reminder to previously explained procedures and setting up of individuals machine. The second Hackathon would then be the major coding session).
- Had a small contest on Wikidata to increasing the enthusiasm and willingness to contribute to Wikidata
- Successfully hosted a photo walk and taken usable images of the school's surrounding environment. Epe, the locality where the Engineering campus is located is a very richly culturally significant community which unfortunately significant portion has not been documented on Wiki.
- Improved our existing editors' skillset, as well as teaching new editors how to edit.
How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:
- Number of total participants = 40 distinct participants
- Number of articles created or improved (if applicable) = 30 articles created/improved
- Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (if applicable) = 20 images
- Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects (if applicable) = 5 images
- Number of commits made to Wikimedia project =5 commits
What resources do you have? Include information on who is the organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
- The university library will be available for the editathon for free. Although academic activities have been put on hold for the mean time, I've been in correspondence with the University librarian who have agreed pending some formal undertaking which will be completed upon resumption. We also have some well experienced student photographers with sophisticated cameras (user:Lordgentual and user:Clementsedote) who would lead the photo walk and also donate their equipment and time for free. The Wikidata contest will be led by I and other editors who were available during the crash course that was held by Asaf months ago. Experienced developers from AWMD would be available throughout to assist during the Hackathon(via skype). We also had an excess of $375 from our previous grant.

- Food & beverages = $5/meetup x 25 people x 6 meetups = 750 USD
- Data for regular meetups= $ 65 x 4 meetups = 260 USD
- Data for Hackathon(which is expected to be heavier) $100 x 2 = 200 USD
- Prize for the WikiData contest $100 worth of shoprite shopping voucher
- Vehicle hire and pizza for the photo walk = $150
- Contingency funds =$300
Total = 1760 USD with exchange rate at N306 =$1
