Hi Ibra~28. Thank you for this grant request. It's great to hear you're interested in doing outreach at Uskudar University. We have a few questions/comments below and look forward to your responses.

  1. It sounds like your are planning one event, inviting anyone interested in contributing to the Wikimedia projects to attend. You also mention having new people meet experienced editors. What is the plan for this event? Will you be doing an editing workshop or is it a general overview?
  • We want to make a Wikipedia event in our university every two months this one will be the first of the series. In this first event, we are planing to have 4 speakers, 2 of them are invited from out of Istanbul. The first speach will be a presentation on general overview (What is the wikipedia, how it works and how one would become editor, the five pillars etc...) Other speakers will be focusing on more specific issues (copyright, referencing, etc) At the closing we want to make a small editing contest among the participants.Ibra~28 (talk) 07:48, 8 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

  1. Generally we have found one-off outreach events to be unsuccessful in recruiting new editors or contributors to the projects. Instead, we have found workshops that are held several times of a period of weeks or months where people come to learn how to edit, develop relationships with other new editors, and have guidance from experienced editors, to much more successful in engaging and retaining new volunteers. We can support a general outreach event with minimal advertising (posters) and materials for the user group (banners).

Please let us know if you are interested in a more targeted editing workshop approach. If yes, we can provide more guidance on this type of project. If you would like to move forward with a general outreach event, we can support the banners, posters, and local transportation costs for experienced Wikimedians who will help with the event. • After the meeting I want to make Wikipedia events every 2 months in the university. Additionally, we think that having such activities in the campus will encourage the professors in the university to entegrate Wikipedia in their classes and start Wikipedia Education Program. Hi Ibra~28. Thanks for your responses. It's great to hear that you would like to organize regular events at the university. We still have a few remaining questions/comments.
  1. For an introductory event, it is probably not necessary to bring in speakers from outside of Istanbul. The topics should be basic enough for any experienced Wikipedian to cover. Do you have additional experienced, local Wikipedians who are part of the project and can support with the events? If yes, please list them on the project page. If not, we suggest you have at least two experienced Wikipedians support the project.
  2. We can cover food, posters, one set of user group materials (banners), one set of small swag items (stickers or pins) and local transportation costs for volunteer organizers. If you plan to run multiple events it is important to make sure it is financially sustainable. ,

Hi Ibra~28. Thank you for the edits to the proposal and recruiting two experienced Wikimedians to help with the events. We're happy to support three events. The cost per event is still quite high. Please remove the line items for mugs and badges. What is the rental camera for? We don't fund camera rentals to document editing workshops, only for photo expeditions. After you've made these final edits we can move forward with approval. Best, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 23:34, 5 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ibra~28. Thank you for making the updates. We are happy to support you with these three events. Here are some helpful resources for organizing editing workshops and introducing new people to the Wikimedia projects. They are all in English:

As a professional photographer, I also suggest you look into renting a lower model camera for the photo expedition. The D800 shoots in very very high flie sizes and is probably more powerful than what you need. The D5000+ models all should suffice. Or even the D610. It would be great to have an update after your event. We can support you with figuring out how to improve your model! Please let us know if you have any questions. We are here to support you!
