Follow-up Conversation edit

Hello @Safulo, @masonikar and @LiouShowShya,

Thank you for being on the call earlier. I am documenting the key points from our call here so that we can reference this for future use. I have translated the content into English. Please feel free to make edits, or add on in Mandarin.

Thank you.

Local Context

Could you share about the history and growth of the Amis Wiki community over time?

  • Xiu Xia: Amis, is a language that we know how to speak and write, we want to use different channels to share more about the knowledge and existence of the language. When we found out about Wikipedia 10008 (2019), we started a wikipedia page, we meet every weekend to share and connect. We hope to attract more people to the community (this is our group goal).
  • Hui Juan: We have a common shared love for the language. We want more people to know about the language. So we dedicate our time. Small steps over time will make big impact.
  • Masou: I have a very keen interest in the language. Am a language specialist. And I enjoy language translation. And then I was roped into the wikipedia group. Teacher of teacher. He is the translator for government documents and official country literature. We will consult him when we have queries. There is little mistake when we consult him.
  • Mayaw: 2019 started wikipedia. 2021 got out wikipedia pages. We don’t have many people. We have these online community (9 of us) and some teachers. 2022/2023: We want to go beyond wikipedia channels + website/ facebook / different media to share articles; or film videos to increase publicity. We have about 20 members - and many of us hold full time jobs. Even the weekend meetings there are 7-8 regular volunteers
  • Zhong Han: Each indigenous community was tasked to set up a wikipedia page. He was one of the founding members. At the moment we are just starting, language teachers are the key. We also need the WMF foundation support to increase.

About Amis

Impact

What is the vision or idea that you envision for the Amis Wiki community and the state of wikiprojects that the community contributes to? (i.e. desired state)

  • Zhong Han: Because wikipedia is global. Wikipedia is used as a learning tool, or an information source. The UN also recognises it as a resource. In the past, this language has no words, so we used roman pinyin to translate to write the content. We are using wikipedia as the main tool for language documentation. If we want to have it as a recognisable language/ culture.
    • Short term: We need more members. We need to go back to our ancestral villages to document oral cultural languages. Many of the indigenous elders are already old and there is an urgency to document the cultural knowledge. We hope that the Foundation will support us.
    • Long term: Translation team for Amis, training.

Masou

  • The language content in written formed was only created recently. There is a need to learn and to write the language from scratch. When we do the translation and put it on wikipedia, we need alot of time. There are not many people who may be interested, but not many are willing to spend time. *Many of us have to work doubly hard to capture and document the information. In the future, there will be many willing to join us, it's just that there are not that many people who know about our work.
  • At the moment, we are working on translating pages on countries. And there are many. Once we have completed the countries. Then we would focus on indigenous communities.

Xiu Xia

  • We will try different approaches and methods to document our activities and make it fun, share it online so that more people can find us.
  • We will do outreach, meetups, edit-a-thons, dialogue - most important way to preserve language is to have elderly and children be able to speak.
  • We need to be able to capture these so that the next generation of children can learn.

Hui Juan

  • Long-term: For global knowledge and recognition of Amis language and culture. The difficulty of culture and language preservation is to capture oral expressions, stories, experiences, so that we can understand what our ancestors went through.
  • If we need to do oral transcription, we have to document it as a team and there is currently limited manpower
  • When we document a story, it has to be done through several interviews and verifications from different people to make sure the facts/ stories are consistent.
  • At the moment, we are doing translation - countries, people. In future, we want to document our stories and history

Mayaw

  • Short term: Focus on translating wikipedia articles about food, clothing, articles that touch on objects with cultural significance as well as oral transcription.
  • Medium term: To have substantial material for so that it can be a part of the national curriculum. In future, we hope teachers can also reference these wikipedia articles as a teaching resource.
  • Long term: Resources - equipment/ awareness building. To also have amis pages on more current issues such as politics and global affairs etc.

Grant Approval edit

Hello @Safulo, @masonika and @LiouShowShya

Thank you so much for your patience. We are delighted to share that your grant application has been approved. We know it has been a journey and we are thankful for your continued openness and curiosity.

For future grant applications, it would be useful to provide more context, project timeline, share more details about your project team (experience with the movement, how they contribute to the project), use of budget templates (so that it helps with your reporting as well).

Let’s continue having regular conversations over the course of your grant implementation. Please let me know if you require support in any way or would like to share your experiences with a wider community through the Let's Connect Programme [1]. If you need further 1-1 support, please let me know and we can set up peer-learning sessions.

For easy reference, I am also sharing the reporting requirements for the grant can be found here[2] and templates are available here [3]. Timelines for reporting can be found in your grant agreement or on Fluxx. All reports are to be completed and submitted via Fluxx.
