editWe increased the budge a little, because we changed the venue. I checked the state of the previous venue on the telephone, and it was different from what they says on their website.--Mineralsab (talk) 08:10, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

edit- Mineral, have you had the phone call with the WMF yet? They're experts at assisting applicants.
- "a legal case which is related to Creative Commons License and happened in South Korea, and this will help Wikimedia project users understand meaning of CCL deeply." Could we please have a link (or explanation added to the application) to briefly descibe this issue?
- Who is giving the presentations? Do they have experience in this? How long will the sessions be? How will you encourage female attendees to sign up for the event? I'd like to see one or two specific goals for the women's activities.
- I presume it will be almost entirely people from Seoul and surrounds ...
- I question the impact of posters and souvenirs. Why not spend that money on social-media advertisements for the event? Given the risk ("too few participants"), will you reach out to ko.WP editors individually?
- I presume that on a Tuesday it will be in the evening. If at another time, more than two hours would be good, with a nice break in the middle.
Tony (talk) 08:32, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you for your comments, User:Tony1. Here are my responses.
- I talked about the phone call with WTF via email, I suggested to talk on Google Hangout, and Kacie accepted it. I'll contact her this week.
- You can see summary of the legal case at [1], but I apologize that this article is written in Korean. To summarize in English, there was a Korean wiki-site under CC BY-NC-SA, someone made a mirroring site, and attached commercial advertisements to the mirroring site. After the administrator of the original site added some sentences that transfered copyright of the articles to him/her to the terms of use without agreement of users, he/she asked to stop running of the mirroring site, claiming that the site broke the license of the original site. It was debated whether the administrator of the wiki-site had a right to ask to shut down the mirroring site based on copyright law or other laws.
- following are the speakers who are going to give a presentation in our conference:
- Legal session - User:Mineralsab, who majored in communications, and minored in law
- Educational session - User:Neoalpha, who majored in education
- Technical session - User:Jmkim dot com, who is an administrator of Korean Wikipedia and works for an IT company
- FANTasia Edit-a-Thon result - I will request one of the volunteers of the editathon or Seung-a Lee, a curator of Seoul Museum of Art to give a presentation
- I have given a presentation the 2012 conference, and Jmkim dot com was a management staff of the 2012 conference. Neoalpha announced his plan to make a textbook in the February meetup. (w:ko:사용자:Neoalpha/교육) We will allocate thirty minutes to each session. FANTasia Edit-a-Thon which we will hold on September 19th is targeting women new editors, and we will invite them to our conference as a follow-up event. I will talk about success of the editathon with women participants to better educational program for women editors.
- A quarter of population of Korea is concentrated in Seoul and neighboring cities, and Seoul has the most convenient transportation system. Seoul is the best place to gather the most people.
- We will post the posters on wall of the venue to guide guests, and they'er not for advertising. Instead of spending money on social media advertisement, we will distribute press materials to news agencies. (if possible, we will request for advertising fee.) We estimate it is very effective to give t-shirts or other souvernir to many attendees, given the our experiences of the 2012 conference and a lecture we held before.
- We will hold the event on November 14 or 21. Those days are on Saturday in Korea.--Mineralsab (talk) 11:30, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, Mineralsab. Good answers. If on a Saturday, could it be longer? I'm presuming the (high) cost of hiring the venue would cover it for a bit longer. Those two days, then, will be part 1 and part 2, for the same participants, will they? (Would have been good to spell this out in the application.) And like almost everywhere in Sth Korea, I guess the internet will be superb!
- The women's editathon: will you focus on women's topics, like high-achieving Korean women (in sport, in science, in scholarship, in government?) This would be a strong attraction for potential female participants. Are there any tips you'll be giving them about managing their interactions in what I presume is largely a male editing environment?
- Edu session—unsure what the content and aims will be.
- Tech session—how novice/expert will the angle be?
- Seoul; of course.
- Legal session and this issue you explained above—worth involving the WMF, getting their advice?
Thank you. Tony (talk) 12:46, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- User:Tony1, here are my answers to your follow-up questions.
- We will hold the event on one day, and it will be for 5 hours. This venue is much cheaper than other commercial venue like en:COEX, becuase it is run by a public organization.
- The editathon is focusing on Asian women and art. Our editathon was influenced by Art and Feminism. We've already chosen articles we will edit on the day of the event, and we are checking them by now. This edit-a-thon is first one for women in Korea, and we will find a better way to attract women users through the result of the editathon.
- About sessions
- Educatinonal session: As I mentioned below, he will speak about a textbook development using Wikipedia contents with following the official educational guideline of Korean Government (교육 과정). He explained his plan at w:ko:사용자:Neoalpha/교육 in Korean.
- Technical session: the presentation will target experienced Wikimedia users. I gave him some resources I got from Wikimania 2015.
- Legal session: If WMF can help us, we will request an advice of WMF :)--Mineralsab (talk) 13:30, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for your responses. If this project is funded, I look forward to reading lessons learned in your report. My best wishes. Tony (talk) 05:35, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
- User:Tony1, here are my answers to your follow-up questions.
WMF comments
editHi Mineralsab, Thank you for submitting a request for WikiConference Seoul. It is great to see so much activity with the Korean user group, especially coming after the Fantasia editathon. Please see the comments below and let us know if you have any questions.
- The topics for your conference sound interesting, how was the community involved in choosing them?
- Who is your target audience for this event? Reading your proposal it seems like you are targeting both new and existing users. Other chapters have observed that it is difficult to plan sessions that are engaging for both audiences.
- The education session seems like it is most likely targeted at newer users. Other Wikimedians involved in education have found that general outreach talks and sessions are not an effective way to engage educators or students who are not already active on Wikimedia projects. I’m happy to set up a call with you to talk more about your plans for education related outreach or anything else in this proposal.
- The budget looks good, looks like you found a very affordable venue.
We look forward to hearing from you soon. Cheers! --KHarold (WMF) (talk) 23:12, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you for the comments, KHarold (WMF). Here are my answers.
- As I mentioned at the grant submission page, a legal suit case regarding CCL was happened in one of the biggest Korean wiki-sites. The legal problem of that website was suggested on Korean Wikipedia community at first, so we decided to deliver a presentation that analyze the case. Because a user asked to introduce topics dealt with outside of Korean Wikipedia when we notified our event on the Village Pump of Korean Wikipedia, we chose Wikidata as one of our topics.
- Yes. The conference is for both existing users and new users. When we hold 10th anniversary ceremony of Korean Wikipedia, we divided the program into two sessions. First session was for new users, and other one was was existing users. To gather more people, we distributed t-shirts and cookies to one hundred attendees. We think it was successful to gather both new and existing users. In this conference, the presentations about the legal topic and Wikidata is for existing users, and the presentations about the edit-a-thon and educational topic is for new users. We think it is also effective to provide snacks to attract new users, given our experience of a meetup for 300 thousand articles of Korean Wikipedia we held before.
- In the educational presentation, the speaker will explain how to develop a real textbook following the educational guide of Korean government and show an example of the textbook using an article of Korean Wikipedia.

- Hi Mineralsab, your responses to Tony1's questions were very helpful. Thank you both for helping to clarify the goals and activities for this event. It was good to talk to you this morning about your conference program and goals. We are ready to approve the request. Below are comments and resources that we hope are helpful for planning your conference.
- The person leading the Wikidata session is a very experienced editor on Wikipedia, but is new to Wikidata. Do you feel that the presenter is confident enough to present on Wikidata. Is there someone else in your community who can assist in the presentation? Consider incorporating an activity into the Wikidata session so that users get some experience using the program.
- We suggest that you follow up with conference participants after the event either with a simple survey, add them to mailing lists, or ask them to follow WMKO on Facebook so that they can be invited to future events, such as the Hangul editathon.
- Please add the conference schedule/activities to the request page.
- Resources:
- Post conference surveys - Learn how to prepare a post-conference survey.
- Mix newcomers and veterans - Encourage active editors to speak with new users during the social part of the conference.

- Thank you for your advice, User:KHarold (WMF).
- The speaker of the Wikidata session has a lot of knowledge on technical development and digital data. I believe that he can understand Wikidata very well, and deliver a very organized presentation. In Korean Wikimedia Community, there is four administrators of Wikidata, and one of our team members, User:ChongDae is also a very skillful user of Wikidata, and I will request them to give a advice. I added an activity experiencing Wikidata to our program.
- I added our conference schedule table to the request page. :) --Mineralsab (talk) 07:56, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi Mineralsab. It is fantastic that so many people would like to attend the conference, and we will approve a change in budget to pay for additional food. Does the budget table above include all of the expenses for the conference? We hope the conference goes well tomorrow, and we look forward to hearing about it. Remember to collect email addresses and usernames of participants so that your community can follow up with potential new members. Cheers --KHarold (WMF) (talk) 20:23, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
