what tools are you going to work on? Is there a list of particular tools you are going to work on? Who will be mentors for participants, what experience do they have? what are the measures of success in relation to developed tools: number of tools, number of active users of developed tools, etc.? rubin16 (talk) 20:17, 29 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Yes, we have called the requirement and ideas from community and we will soon shortlist the tools to be developed.
We will have mentors from CIS A2K India technical development team, Industrial technical experts (Wikipedia Community members) and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay Wikipedia volunteers. Most of the mentors are having technical experiences from 8 to 20 years and Wikipedia exposure of more than 5 years.
The Marathi Encyclopedia (consist of 21 Volumes)developed by Language Ministry of Government of Maharashtra has now made copyright free. We need tools to atomize the porting task for saving time and efforts. These utilities will be exclusively used for porting work by community. We will short list 3 tools which will be primarily used by more than 250 active users for porting task. Harish satpute (talk) 05:29, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Harish satpute, thank you for your hard work planning this event and preparing this grant request. It is exciting to see that the Hackathon has become more popular with students and the community each year, and we are glad that you have gotten support from CIS. We would be pleased to support this project, but it would be helpful to have a few more details about your past experiences and current plan:

  • Have proof-of-concepts created during past hackathons been developed into tools? Are there other ways that the past hackathons have benefitted your community or Wikimedia projects?

Yes some of the proof-of-concepts created during past hackathons have been developed into tools. I am listing the few.
i) Android App for Image uploading to Marathi wikipedia.
This android photo sharing app developed for Marathi Wikipedia has @ 10,000 downloads from Google play store. The review also rank it 3.9 over 5 points as a feedback.

ii) Android App offline Marathi Wikipedia for Aakash Tablet. (Low cost tablet promoted by Government of india.)
This application was very useful to distribute Marathi Wikipedia as offline content on the tablet developed by Government of India for students.
Mumbai Municipal Corporation is also going to use it to distribute preloaded offline Marathi Wikipedia on 50,000 free tablets which are distributed to school students.
iii) Offline Wikipedia application for low cost NETBOOK.

  • Are you planning to do any follow up with participants after the Hackathon to encourage them to continue contributing?
Yes, we are going to be in touch with the participants after the event also to convert the proof of concept into the tool, as these utilities are going to be used by Marathi Wikipedia community for the porting projects.
We will review their progress once every quarter of a year.
  • What criteria will be used to select hackathon participants?
The criteria for selecting participants for the hackathon is as follows.
The participant should be aware of Midiawiki technology, wikidata, knowledge of Wikipedia API and its development tools and strong software development skill set and good ideas.
  • It sounds like you plan to focus on building small tools to automate porting and normalization work that could be used on projects like moving the content from the Marathi language encyclopedia onto Wikimedia projects. Are there other projects that you will focus on during this hackathon?
Though, the primary focus this year will be on the development of porting tools. In addition to this we are also planning to develop ::location based mapping tool with Wikidata for ruler GIS information. In fact we welcome any new feasible idea for hackathon. The call for ideas is also posted on village pump.

We look forward to your responses so that we can learn more about this project. Please let us know if you have any questions or need clarification about our comments. --KHarold (WMF) (talk) 17:16, 26 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
