Grants talk:IdeaLab/Wikipedia on tour
The great American road trip
editCreator's note: I'm US based, but this could apply to many other geographic reasons. Please suggest alternative locations/routes beyond my extremely biased North American ideas. :) Ckoerner (talk) 21:47, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
Internet in a box
editAt NYC Wikipedia Day I met someone who showed off "Internet in a Box". Basically <$100 a Raspberry Pi with 128 GB MicroSD that was loaded with Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap, Project Gutenberg (books), Khan Academy courses, and open source software. He used a beefy USB battery for a 2-3 hour runtime.
The entire thing was pretty interesting, between the original intend for developing countries and reuse in the US, article culling for schools, and branding as "Internet in a Purse" to avoid wall mounting and subsequent theft. Dispenser (talk) 16:24, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

editHey there @Ckoerner, T.vats749, and Miriya52:, thanks for this idea of having an educational tour! I wanted to check in to see how you were are all thinking about proceeding with this idea. What sort of role do you think you will be taking? I do want to bring your attention to the fact that this kind of idea has been proposed in the past, so that a good a starting place might be reviewing these ideas and feedback they received to understand some of the logistics that might be needed to carry out this project:
If you have decided that you want to carry out this tour in particular location, some preliminary considerations will probably include questions like:
- How will you invite people to participate in your tour?
- What are your goals for this tour? What do you want participants to be able to do having taken part in your tour? Maybe this could be editing, but it might also simply be learning how to use Wikipedia or another Wikimedia project.
- Based on those goals, what do you want to teach while on tour?
- Where are some places you might want to go to teach?
- Based on the places you've chosen how long will the tour be?
Also start thinking about what your funding needs might be, such as the cost of materials you might need to print. If you'd like to chat more to help you think about planning this kind of project, let me know and I'll be happy to help. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 01:40, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
