Grants talk:IdeaLab/Going to places unaware of Wikipedia to use it more often for day-to-day search queries

Comments from SGill (WMF) edit

Hi @SGill (WMF): Thanks for the reply. I'm based in Delhi and was born to a village native family in West UP (Nirpura, 65 km away from Delhi) therefore I look forward to implementing my idea in this demographic region as of now. I think that I'd be able to implement this from March 2018 starting from the birthplace.

I plan to organize in-person events like Wiki Demo-day that introduce new people to Wikipedia and how contributing to it helps the world. I plan events like edit-a-thons in urban regions of Delhi NCR starting from my college Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies. There will be presentations and group discussions with post-event networking in events in/around urban demographic while the inclusion of these in rural demographics depends on the turnout of locals. However, for twice a year there'll be events organized similarly to urban regions for rural regions.

Moreover, I personally have contacted a Wikipedian who has been receiving Wikimania scholarship for 2 years in a row now. He says to help me in implementing this idea. I'm really looking forward to implementing this from the ground.

Hi @Sambhav2612: Thanks for creating your idea. I understand that you are planning to do some in-person events to raise awareness of Hindi Wikipedia and I have some questions for you:
* What will be your target region/city/district and when do you think you will be able to implement this idea?
* What kind of in-person events are you planning to organize? Will there be presentations or group discussions?

Next steps to develop your idea edit

Thanks for the reply I JethroBT (WMF).

1. Describe one or two versions of this idea that are smaller than your initial one.

1. I can first implement a smaller version of this idea where I can influence my peers using the available hardware and resources starting from my college space by conducting teaching labs.
2. I can reach out to my birthplace and conduct a similar set of events within a territory 3-4 nearby households and expanding it depending on the enthusiasm and contribution turnout.

2. List three assumptions about your project and why you think those assumptions are true.

1. It assumes that the institutions in urban demographics like the region of Delhi NCR have permitted to use their building(s) for organizing events like workshops, classes, and edit-a-thons; and subsequently, to promote these events via the means of posters and flyers. This assumption is true because it'll improve institutions' student's proficiency to keep the Wikipedia website updated, maintained and thoroughly translated while providing a platform to contribute on.
2. It assumes that rural participants would be interested. This assumption is true as it'll not only educate (in case if they are not already) the participants with the Wikipedia website but also provide a medium to contribute to in their leisure time. Moreover, given the support of locals, this can be extended to the rural schools as a test for the students studying there.
3. Finally, it assumes that the end-user knows how to operate the web and search keywords on the Internet. Even if one does not, this assumption is proved true as under this campaign we'll also teach people how to use the web and internet (if they do not know already). In latter case, we'll teach them how to do that effectively, without wasting any time or sweat.

3. List three skills or resources you don’t have, that you need for this project to succeed.

1. Event Organization and resources for participants
2. Presentations
3. Funds to reimburse the travel expenses

4. How can you determine if your project is successful?

This could be determined on the basis of people participating in pre-event organization and post-event surveys. By the turnout of participants primarily in rural demographics (eg. Baghpat District of West UP, India). By edit-a-thon presence to registration percentage greater or equal to 75 (eg. 100 people registered for an edit-a-thon and 75 people turn up at the venue, hence accounting for 75% actual turnout which is acceptable). By conducting post-event tests to take account of recent familiarity with Wikipedia.

This is one of the ideas I am looking forward to implement since 2015. Glad to have a platform to do so.

Rapid Grant applications due March 15th edit

Thanks for starting your idea with the New Readers Inspire Campaign. I'm Chris Schilling (User:I JethroBT (WMF)), a community organizer supporting the campaign.

If you think you may need funding for your idea, Rapid Grants are available for ideas submitted during this campaign. Grant applications for ideas related to new readers are due by March 15th, 2018 (23:59 GMT). You can convert your idea into a Rapid Grant proposal by clicking on the Expand into a Rapid Grant button at the bottom of your idea page. Please review the guidelines and criteria before starting your grant application. If you need help completing your grant application, please contact me at cschilling wikimedia.org.

While applications for Rapid Grants can normally be submitted at any time, we have implemented a deadline for ideas on this specific topic. The reason for this deadline is because we plan to develop specific criteria later in 2018 for grant applications related to new readers and awareness-building activities. The applicants and project plans we receive from you in the coming weeks will help us define these guidelines and set expectations for future work in inviting people to use Wikimedia projects generally.

Also, if you do not need funding but would like to discuss other questions or needs for your idea (such as on-wiki volunteers or advising), please feel free to contact me on my talk page or at cschilling wikimedia.org, and we can discuss your needs over e-mail or schedule a time to have a conversation about your needs over Skype / Hangouts / IRC. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) 15:47, 21 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
