Disagree edit

I completely disagree with the proposal of trying to make Wikipedia "trendier" or "fashionable", for the following reasons:

  • It is a superficial solution to a deep problem.
  • It reinforces the idea that women care about looks and fashion rather than serious matters (remember the infamous EU campaign "Science: it's a girl thing"?)
  • It is childish to think that making something pretty will attract women, and is down right condescending.
  • It may compromise the aesthetics of the site.

FKlas (talk) 01:17, 7 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • It will still not reach women who aren't aware of the opportunities in this community.
  • It will probably make the site heavier and harder to load when on low/slow net signal.
  • This is just a sexist and denigrating idea, just saying..... no offense intended.

DO NOT PUT TEXT WHERE PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY PUT A ~~~~ WHOEVER POSTED THESE LAST 3 BULLET POINTS!

  • I am unsure how making the site look "trendy" would result in more females contributing to Wikipedia.
  • What is considered "trendy" or "fashionable" depends on the individual. Women are not a homogeneous group.
  • Any changes made to the site would just have to be altered again once the appearance is dated and untrendy.
  • People of all genders already have the option to edit their personal page.
  • Changing the appearance of other pages could cause confusion to readers and create disharmony between different pages.

  • True that women are not homogeneous group(true so far). But they do things based on their feelings; not logic(we r on the 16 century??). Fklas and Leerwesen, adding more color(and making the web harder to read) excites those feelings needed to attract them more to Commons(because they r all 4 years old?). It's got to be fun; not boring(its mean to be usefull, not fun). Just saying.
  • The previous statement is just so wrong and politically incorrect i cant even thing were to start from to express my oposition to it so i just edited it a bit. Just saying.

  • Gramalow, that's blasted hogswallop. How dare you talk about every single member of womankind as if they were yourself. Women are not bland, generic, identical individuals, and I am sick of hearing people speak of them in such a manner.
  • FURTHERMORE, the Wikimedia projects are not meant to be a place to go hang out and have fun (though Wikipedia does have the "Department of Fun" which is a good place to go to if you wish to have fun). The Wikimedia projects are meant to function as the "new" forms of what they are designed conceptually off of. Tharthan (talk) 21:58, 7 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

This proposal is a joke, isn't it? edit

Manuela (talk) 06:14, 9 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello Manuela. Please remember that we expect all participants in the IdeaLab to follow the Friendly Space Expectations. This means treating people with respect and not editing their comments (as you did above). I would also like to remind Tharthan of these expectations.

Developing the idea edit

Hi Gramalow. Thanks for submitting your idea. I would recommend changing the title reflect you goal a bit better. For example, "Creating a more user-friendly site design". It would be great to hear more concrete ideas for how you would like to redesign the site or do outreach and education to more womens groups. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 22:03, 19 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
