Grants talk:Conference/UG KO/WikiConference Seoul 2017/Report

Comments from I JethroBT (WMF) edit

Hi Motoko C. K., I'm Chris Schilling, a program officer at the Wikimedia Foundation. I've recently stepped into this role in relation to Conference Grants, so please accept my apologies on the wait for my review. Thanks for your report on WikiConference Seoul 2017. Here are some comments and questions I had about your report:

  • First, thanks for reporting some important outcomes from the conference. Some active work on making substantive policy changes on ko.wikipedia from Twotwo2019 and the two editing projects involving students at the two universities are both very good outcomes related to your goals of delivering new knowledge to our projects and introducing the usefulness of our projects to new audiences. Policy changes are often difficult to initiate and work on because they can result in broad changes to a project, and it's important that the conference could serve as a place to facilitate discussion and planning around that work. I had two questions around the education projects: Were some of these university students attendees at the conference? What happened during the Education Project activity at the conference to help initiate these projects at the universities?
  • When you're able, please update the link for the Eulji University tracking page, as it currently links to the same tracking as the Hallym University tracking page.
  • Replacing the edit-a-thon with the Wikidata query session seemed like it was a good replacement idea. Outside of attendance numbers, what sort of outcomes came from this session?
  • In the next conference, what proportion of new speakers to speakers from previous conference would you like to achieve?
  • With the professor of Sookmyung Women's University, were there any plans to collaborate with them or connect them to events or projects where her involvement would be useful?

I've also reviewed and approved your expenses for the event. When you're able, please respond my questions, and then I can formally accept your report. Thanks very much for the report on WikiConference Seoul 2017, and congratulations on a successful event. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 20:45, 1 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Motoko C. K.: Hi Motoko, please respond to the above comments as soon as you are able. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 21:02, 4 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
@I JethroBT (WMF): Sorry to be late. I have prepared for our annual conference. Here are my answers to your questions.
  • Were some of these university students attendees at the conference? What happened during the Education Project activity at the conference to help initiate these projects at the universities?
The two universities are far from Seoul where the conference was held, so the students did not attend. A university professor from one of the universities participated in the conference and we assumed the activity encouraged him to decided to join in the project.
  • When you're able, please update the link for the Eulji University tracking page, as it currently links to the same tracking as the Hallym University tracking page.
I changed the link.
  • Replacing the edit-a-thon with the Wikidata query session seemed like it was a good replacement idea. Outside of attendance numbers, what sort of outcomes came from this session?
We learned the Wikidata query, and made an educational material from Asaf's presentation and slides. We taught about the Wikidata in Ajou University in March.
  • In the next conference, what proportion of new speakers to speakers from previous conference would you like to achieve?
In this year's conference, we directly invited two speakers of total five speakers outside of the Wikimedia projects.
  • With the professor of Sookmyung Women's University, were there any plans to collaborate with them or connect them to events or projects where her involvement would be useful?
Unfortunately, we failed to collaborate with the professor. Instead, we found another educator who is using Wikipedia as a educational tool. She is a teacher of a high school for gifted students. We introduced the project to her students, and they will create or improve English Wikipedia articles with our help.
