Grants talk:Conference/Godstime Elijah/ Wiki Camp Kwara
WMF feedback
editHi Godstime Elijah,
Thank you so much for the time and effort made into creating this proposal. We highly appreciate your initiative in hosting the Wiki Kwara Camp. I also want to highlight and thank you for the detailed budget and community survey.
The Conference Fund Committee and I have reviewed your proposal and have some questions and thoughts we want to share:
Target audience and participation :
- What do you mean by 'young Wikimedians'? Are you referring to youth?
- What are you referring as 'Career opportunities within the Wikimedia movement'? Please elaborate on your expected outcome for this item.
- How will scholarship recipients be selected? Please include your scholarship criteria.
- Do you intend to include both new and experienced users? If so - how will you design the program to accommodate the audience needs and different levels of experience?
- Keynote speakers - I see 10 keynote speakers. Given the specific travel fare I guess you have already selected them. So can you please share who those be and what will be their role/ contribution to the camp? I also see all of them are international. Given the event is mainly targeting local community, why all speakers come form other countries? Do you have any local speakers attending?
- We are not clear as to the number of participants. I see 10 keynote speakers; 5 full scholarships, and 25 partial scholarships. But that does not sum up into the 80 total participants you indicated. Can you please clarify?
Outcomes and Impact
- Reading your proposal and the risks identified, we are concern about the needed experience and specific skills. One of our major elements when considering a proposal is the experience and ability for holding the effort *after* the camp and if the effort and impact are sustainable. In these kind of activities, it is crucial to have the bandwidth to follow up with participants, to support them in how they implement whet they have learned, and developing new skills and connections. What are your plans for follow up and post camp support for participants?
- The proposal lack the focus on the real impact and change you want to see. What is the Theory of change? what is the long term impact you expect? You indicated things such as 'knowledge sharing', 'Thematic meet-ups' and 'strategic discussions', but what will the specific topics and skills be? Those definitions are too wide and it makes it hard to understand what exactly do you want to do. Please list your clear goals and objectives (those can be quantitative and qualitative) and please also include metrics.
- I know we have talked about it before, but we are still concerned about organizing such event with no regional collaboration or past experience. There are many good involved affiliates in the region (not only Wikimedia Nigeria user group) who initiated/performed successful similar projects you can collaborate or consult with. And there are also many other affiliates in the movement who have long experience and good best practices exactly in organizing Wiki Camps you can learn from. Have you thought about reaching out to them? The Conference funds committee is asking to emphasize that collaboration is very important here for both the capacity and experience, and for the long term impact.
Conference Fund Committee recommendation
The committee's recommendation for the organizing team is to start by organizing a smaller scale event, ideally with more regional partnerships (which we will be happy to work with you on designing), building up to the capacity and experience needed, and to resubmit for a full camp proposal such as this, in another funding round.
I am more than happy to continue the conversation and to elaborate more on the committee's feedback and requirements. We do look forward to working together on creating the right platform that will best serve the Kwara community and to set this event to be a success and an important milestone for the community building and skills.
Thank you again for your application. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Best CAlmog (WMF) (talk) 12:25, 7 July 2022 (UTC)
