Wiki Loves Africa is an annual campaign that aims to increase the quality and quantity of African content on Wikipedia. The campaign encourages people across Africa to contribute to Wikipedia by submitting photographs, videos, and audio recordings related to the theme: Climate and Weather. This proposal will provide resources that will enable the participation of Kwara Sate University students in this years' Wiki Loves Africa.

  1. Create awareness about the Wiki Loves Africa and its activities.
  2. Recruit and train new editors through the various photo expeditions, upload sessions and edit-a-thons.
  3. Engage existing editors to contribute to Commons and other sister projects.

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We will be doing one Photowalk to 3 different sites, one edithaton in the school premises, and 2 series of online trainings.

The arears we are visiting are;

  1. The drainage systems in various Arears in Kwara state.
  2. Places where refuses are dumped that causes air pollution and has an effect in the climate condition in Kwara state.
  3. Deforestated lands has resulted in continued loss of plants and animal’s life, at the same time it served as a central player in contributing to the menace of climate change.
  4. A visit to The Niger River basin in Kwara State, it has significant importance towards the climate and weather of the region.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

We will promote the contest through the fan club's official Social Media platforms (Facebook, and Twitter). We will also communicate with the participants through a fan clubs' WhatsApp group and the club executives will visit various departments within the school to inform them.

Yes, participants already have smartphones and laptops. All the participants are computer literates.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will do a follow-up with participants, and encourage them to follow the various social media handles that promotes Wikicommons projects. We will provide them with tips on creating, and editing Wikicommons.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

The significance of Wiki Loves Africa in Kwara State University (KWASU)

  • Promoting African culture: Wiki Loves Africa is an opportunity for students, staff, and members of the KWASU community to showcase the rich and diverse African culture. By contributing photos and other multimedia content, the KWASU community can help to promote African culture and heritage to the world towards Climate and Weather.
  • Enhancing digital skills: Participating in Wiki Loves Africa can help to enhance digital skills among students and staff at KWASU. This can include skills related to photography, video editing, and content creation for digital platforms.

In summary, the Niger River basin in Kwara State has significant importance towards the climate and weather of the region, playing an important role in precipitation, temperature moderation, flood control, carbon sequestration, and climate change mitigation.
