  • Attract new contributors and increase the quality of content on Wikimedia projects.
  • Promote awareness of the Wikimedia Canada chapter and its commitment in support of French language and culture.
  • Present Wikimedia Canada as an accessible chapter for Quebec residents and French-speaking Canadians.
  • Continue progress towards Charity status in Canada by maintaining excellent records and compliance with all government regulations.

List of activities

The Wikimedia Canada program for 2013 covers several projects, but only three require financial support from the WMF. Administrative cost to run the chapter has been included to support both the funded and no cost events that we execute.

Wikimedia Canada has established a group of regional volunteers in the province of Quebec. Most of our program funding is directed to this group, which has served as a model for the rest of Canada. We continue to encourage Canadians to get involved with the chapter, but have decided in 2013 to focus our energy where our largest support base exists. As we cross the 50 member mark in 2013 we seek to bring our volunteer base together to work on local events while continuing to innovate on ways to draw the attention of other regions in Canada.

Presentation at the CBC tour (Canadian Science Writers' Association) edit

  • Background: Annual congress of Science Communicators Association of Quebec, the Canadian Science Writers' Association and the World Federation of Science Journalists
  • Description: Wikimedia Canada is invited for a talk of 2 hours, at the CBC tour, where Science Communicators Association of Quebec organise its annual congress. Alan Walker present Wikimedia Foundation / Canada, Benoit Rochon present Wikipedia, Nathalie Casemajor present Projet Pheobus and Olier Raby present how to edit / create an article.
  • Scope: The presentation aim to explain the structure of Wikimedia and Wikipedia / Commons, in order to bring scientific journalists to edit Wikipédia in French. Most of the journalists are using WP-en, but we want to teach them who to improve article and / or translate in French.

Wiki Loves Monuments in Canada edit

  • Background: Canada first participated in Wiki Loves Monument in 2012. See Canadian finalists and winners.
  • Description: Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual international photographic competition to highlight historical monuments and heritage sites through upload of pictures on Commons. The competition is held in September and pictures will be judged to award three prizes to the winners in November-December timeframe.
  • Scope: Announcements through medias and social networks will be performed to increase the visibility of the contest in Canada. A website will be maintained to facilitate participation and uploading of pictures to Commons from Canadian participants. Three prizes will be awarded to national winners.
  • Project Coordinator: Benoit Rochon

    • Increase the number of pictures about Canada on Commons to be used on all Wikimedia projects.
    • Increase participation and improve quality.
    • Increase visibility of Wikimedia projects and Wikimedia Canada through the use of medias and social networks.

Educational projects edit

  • Background: Simon Villeneuve, a teacher at the Cégep de Chicoutimi and volunteer of Wikimedia Canada, has been using Wikipedia in the classroom since 2008. Since becoming engaged with Wikimedia Canada, Simon has asked for financial support to expand the program to other institutions in Quebec. Wikimedia Canada has publicized the work of Simon and others in the WM CA activity reports.
  • Description: The project is lead by a teacher and is used to initiate students in astronomy and astrophysics to contribute to Wikipedia.
  • Scope: To continue the education project at the Cégep de Chicoutimi and to keep it leading the educational projects on the French Wikipedia. Firstly, the project coordinator will further develop the project page on Wikipedia to add the astrophysics class to the project beside the astronomy class. Secondly, he will also continue to refine Wikipédia:Exercices in order to develop a "ready-to-use" approach for teachers and their students. Thirdly, there is plan to organize two "Wikimedian in class" days to support students in one particular aspect of the project during which an experienced Wikipedian will come to the cégep of Chicoutimi to meet the students (note that the intent is to organize one of these events per session, fall and winter, but there is the possibility to have only one during the winter session). Fourthly, the project coordinator would like to organize a meeting once a year to gather and encourage discussion between different stakeholders in free culture, in the same style of Copyleft days.

Requests for non-financial assistance
We would like to have some supplies for outreach from Wikimedia Foundation. By supplies I mean some swags like T-shirts, posters, pins, stickers, postcards, etc. Everything that is nice to give participants in an event.
Also, at our inter-universities WikiPhys event, a student suggest that we should have some shirts to sell on the spot of an event; I think having a few Wikipedia globe sweats and Globe T-Shirts would be very popular. When they are sold we would return the money to WMF.

Our volunteers have been working on a program for Canadian schools, starting in Quebec. As it evolves we may find a formula that is applicable for other school districts.

Presenting to the scientific community gives us the opportunity to humanize the Wikimedia community. Our involve with school outreach programs encourages faculty to integrate the Wikimedia projects into their classrooms. These activities should server to recruit new editors and improve project content. Additionally, creating interest in Wikimedia Canada should help in recruiting new volunteers and ideas for future projects.
